Using Drama to teach Common Core Education (Lesson Plan #1)

How can you use drama (free play scripts) with the United State Common Core Education standards?

First... What is the Common Core?

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the Standards”) are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the charge issued by the states to create the next generation of K–12 standards in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school.

So let's get started!

The first common core English concept is for grades 6-12:

"Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text."

Read the play "Looks Get in the Way" by D. M. Larson. Ideally read aloud with students reading the actors as well as one student who reads the stage directions/actions. http://www.freedrama.net/looksget.html

Answer the following questions as a group during a discussion or write the answers. You must give an example from the play that supports your answer:

What is the play about? (Give an example from the play that supports your answer)

Who are the two main characters?

Where is the play taking place?

Why are they together? (Give an example from the play that supports your answer)

What is usual about this first meeting between the two main characters? (Give an example from the play that supports your answer)

Why do you think the characters behave the way they do? What might be some things from their past that made them the way they are?

What do you think will happen next?
