Free Acting School online

So you would like to be an actor?

The first step is to figure out why you want to be one. Ask yourself, "Why do I want to be an actor?"

If you want to be rich and famous, that can be a long and difficult road that requires a lot of luck.

But if you want to be an actor because it is fun or it brings you joy or you like entertaining others, then this could be the right choice for you.

Decide why you want to act, figure out why it is important to you and what kind of actor you want to be.

STEP ONE: KEEP A JOURNAL (POST BELOW)

To get a certificate of completion for this class please keep a journal for each day you do this acting class online.

You'll share this journal with your instructor (D. M. Larson) and others in the blog below. Day 1 question: "Why do you want to be an actor?"

You must then respond to another actor's post in this course.  Give words of encouragement. Share your experiences. Or discuss acting.  Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and not eligible for the $50 best student award or $200 voice acting contest.  You will start hearing from your instructor on Part 5 of these course as you prepare two monologues for your final exam.

Don't act like a pirate in these discussions.

FINAL EXAM (after completing the first four lessons of the course):

You will also need to complete two recordings of yourself acting (audio or video) and make changes to each after getting suggestions from your instructor. You want these to be contrasting monologues - one drama and one comedy - in order to show your range.  You must select a monologue from one of these links:

After you post your journal below, go to Day 2 of the acting school:

I met my husband in a show. We were cast as fiances and started dating after the show was done. And now we enjoy acting together in many shows.

  3. Some movies you watch have a huge impact on you. They can even change your life or give an answer to a problem you've been having for some time. Movies and television shaped me as a person. My mother always told me to make good use of whatever my interests are. I watch a lot of television and movies and that's how I thought acting as a career.

I never really thought about acting as a career when I was younger. The first play I did was when I was 13, and I absolutely loved it! I was also the director and that’s when I realized this is the job for me. I felt free to be myself in that character I was playing.

Acting helps me to get out of reality and be someone else for a change. You get to bring life to a character on a script and the more you put your own self in that character, the more fun and sensational it gets. The fellow actors and crew are like family. We play, laugh, sing, dance and have fun together.

When I'm on stage, I feel like I'm home. I feel close to my fellow cast, crew and the audience. We actors take our time to do what we love the most and the audience takes their time off to watch what we do-whether it's on stage or on screen - so that we can get out of reality and live the story together. The actors have fun making a production and the audience have fun watching it. We all laugh, cry together. I can't really call acting 'work' because I love what I do.

I would love to be both a stage and film actress. I love interacting with the audience when I'm on stage. I also find it fun to exaggerate your emotions sometimes. I find films more realistic and I can be myself on the camera and not worry about bringing out my facial expressions and body language. I also like making funny voices at times so, I wouldn't mind trying voice acting once in a while. :)

I am a theatre director and a playwright. I love the wooden stage and by me working with and directing actors, taking acting classes will help me increase my skills and be able to relate better to my actors as a director. Plus, there are times when I have to act out scenes, step in and act in a role, teach someone how to do a scene and explain how I want it done. I really want my acting to be more organic, not look like I'm acting and stay in character better.

  5. The power to move an entire room of people's feelings. Becoming an actor means falling in love with the magic I created on a TV or screen. If I can create my character so compelling that I can make you angry, sad, cry, or fall in love. I did my job. I am in love with that magic. I took hours to create a 10 minute scene. When I saw it on screen. I was amazed at what I did. Now I know. Now I know what passion for the craft means and I want more.

    1. I like when you talk about creating your character and to do so you have to feel what they would feel, come up with a back ground for the character that makes him more real for you and the audience to try to give the character a back bone

      Delete
    2. That was written with true feelings. I am in agreeance with you. To be able to move and entire audience and to see other reactions to how you portray a certain role...Not only moves the viewer but you yourself as an actor/actress.

      Delete
    3. I think passion is key and is the main focus of acting, if you don't have passion you're not acting as well as someone who does can. You write as if you are very passionate and indeed in love with the craft. You know that it is hard work but the rewards are plenty. Keep the amazing work up and we'll be seeing your name in shining lights soon enough. I think it is an amazing thing to make someone fall in love or even loath your character because not only are evoking a passion from them but you know you've done good and you begin to see benefits of the career you've chosen.

      Delete
    4. I totally agree with you. The feeling you get when you connect with a actor/actress is so magical and to one day do that to others would be amazing.

    5. That's great! I love how you pointed out how much time it can take to create a scene. I think I'm hard on myself about how much time something like that may take. I have to stop worrying about how long it takes.

    6. I love how you not only have a passion for the job itself, but you have a passion for sharing that passion through the emotion's in your characters to others. It's beautiful to share in your character's growth and draw them in to want more.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been drawn to anything with a creative outlet, especially drama, music, art, and writing. It is exciting to bring a character to life (real or fictional), but to be perfectly honest, there is still a part of me that simply LOVES playing pretend! I enjoy being who I am, but it is just pure fun to get to be someone or something else for a moment - be it a queen, a superhero, a historical legend, or maybe a dinosaur. Rawr.

  8. I remeber being a child and going to watch theater plays. I always imagined myself there, on the stage, being a part of the play, and I knew someday I was going to be one of the people up there.
I always told my parents I wantedd to become an actress, not because fo the fame, money... but because I love acting and I think it's an amazing thing to do. Sadly, my parents never liked the idea, they always thought I said that because I just wanted to be famous, not true.
Now that I'm a teen, I keep telling my parents that I really want to be an actress, and is something I really like; but their opinion is different, so they never gave me the opportunity to go to classes, to an school... to really learn drama.
Even though I never really had a chance of being a part of a theatre play or something similar, I keep loving the acting. I always try it at home, download scripts, look at online classes to improve my acting... and I think it's an amazing feeling to be able to be someone else for some time, to be able to make people believe that your are not you anymore, you are just another person.
So, why do I want to be an actress? Easy, I have so much fun acting (alone or sometimes with my friends), i love watching TV and imagining one day I will be the one there, I love to have the opportunity to be someone else... I've got a lot of reasons for wanting to be this; this is my dream, andI have no doubts. I know, someday, I will make it.

I've always wanted to be able to express myself in acting to get lost as another person and using the blocked up emotion inside that will never be free or I hope that I can find a way how to. 16. Why do I want to be an actor?

The answer is simple, acting is my gift. There is no way to explain my passion for this trade and industry, but if there were anything greater than love that existed in this universe, it would be my passion and hunger to be a phenomenal actress. There is something magical and fulfilling in discovering myself with every character I explore, while inspiring and entertaining somebody at the some time. The only thing I know for sure is that I don't want this life I can not live it being one of the greatest actresses to have walked this planet.

    1. A good role model is what we all need in this world. I think it helps us to strive for more in life and not to settle for the bare minimum. As a parent the most important thing is for your child to see you work hard and at the same time interact with them imagine with them, there toy coming to life jumping off imaginary mountains in a desert waistland, at the same time singing an adventure song; I prefer star wars. All this brings him happiness and achieving that goal as a role model for him. I have read that it is good to have a actor or actress as a personal role model, A pro to look up to; that can help you make you bring up your own emotions. Usually a good role model, if looked at we'll will always have some good tips to help you mold yourself into that actor or actress that you strive to become.

  19. Acting brings me pleasure and joy! It's an art of bringing a character from imagination and paper to Life. A real life person in the shoes of this character telling their story. All my life I felt like I belong on that stage. I have worked many different jobs, but when I'm on that stage I am who I want to be. Who I need to be. A medium between fantasy and reality.

  21. Why do I want to be an actor?

Honestly...the only thing that I can remember is my father when I was around 3 or 4 years old...sitting on the floor with my little plastic cup full of some sort of orange drink and my little plate of chips looking up at the TV and this beautiful sound coming out of the speakers. Whether it was watching Fred Astaire dancing to "Putting on the Ritz" or watching Ethel Merman singing "Theres No Business Like Show Business" or watching Barbra Streisand making me laugh while playing Fanny Brice and singing "His Love Makes Me Beautiful". But the moment I saw Bernadette Peters singing in "Into to Woods" and watched her so intently play the witch...I knew that is where I wanted to be. The first time I had a chance to feel what it was like to be an actress was at The Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, PA. I did the children's theater. I was casted as the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. Of course as a child you remember how he was as a cartoon...but to be able to take that character and make life of it on stage...and being 15 years old...felt amazing. Now of course life does happen...but there has always been that aching to get back on that stage. I am ready to start my journey again to become an actress.

  25. When I read the question: "Why do you want to be an actor?" I thought to myself 'Actually, why on Earth do I?' But without having to think too much, it came to me. It's a combination of many things. Firstly when I looked over some of the scripts I had a feeling in my stomach that yearned to read, learn and act them out. I wanted to be able to do it with passion and realism. Also, I thought back over all the films I've watched and some re-watched over my life, the shows I love and still love to this day and how much they've taught me and touched me. The actors that have made me believe in a character so much and brought a great story to life. They are my inspiration, if I could be someone's inspiration to do something - maybe even act - it would be a great honour.
There are so many great actors out there and given the opportunity to meet even one or two it would mean a great deal and an even greater deal to get the chance to act along side them.
I think, though through the stress of auditions, rejection, forgetting lines, messing up, etc., etc., in the end acting gives you confidence in all other aspects of life, it is an amazing line of work that if entered and lasted through should make you feel proud of how far you've come because you've made it through all those rejections and come out the other side a better actor, improved, refined and most importantly more experienced.
What makes me want to be an actor is the feeling that I have the potential in me to be a remarkably good actor, I think we all have that potential if we had the passion and work ethic to fulfil it, but what I lack is the confidence to reach it, perhaps with practice and lessons - many, many lessons - one day I'll get there. I don't want fame or fortune, no matter how hard that might be to believe, it's not something I dream of - okay, maybe a wee bit of fame wouldn't hurt. I dream of a good life with lots of smiling and happiness shared and to be good at and respected for what I do. I hope that one day I get the chance to reach my potential and fulfil my dream.
I love the thought of being able to bring a completely different character to life finding a similarity to connect and relate with them. I would love to have the opportunity to act as so many different characters and become them, embrace them and have others relate to them, feel connected to them, love them or hate them because that would mean they feel that character is real and that means I have done my job, I brought that character to life. There are so many more reasons I could go through.

It's natural. It's something that can be overcome. It's empowering. If acting is your outlet, I'm convinced it's necessary to exercise it. Keep conquering that fear.

  31. Movies and television shows are amazing things. They take people on adventures, very similar to books. They help distract people from their everyday problems. They can make people feel better and view the world in a new way. They can inspire people to do better things. Actors are a fundamental part of that, of course. My dream is to inspire, to help. I love knowing I can make a person’s day brighter or more bearable, and I hope to do this in any and every way I can. I found that acting can do just that. I am not the most sociable person, but I have found that the idea of being on stage could help change that. It seems to be a wonderful way of interaction and reaching out to others.

So why do I want to be an actress? I want to be an actress to inspire people, to help change myself for the better, and to maybe help others do the same.

  32. I've told myself many times that I could not be an actor. It wouldn't make me any money. I'd never succeed. I wouldn't be able to take it. Etc. I now realize none of that matters. Acting is my true passion and always has been. My brother helped me see that doing what makes me happy isn't stupid or selfish. It will allow me to find and share joy and love. That's why I want to be an actor. To finally be brave enough to follow my true passion and share it whatever way I can.

Still it's a crazy idea to do acting anyway, for me, I mean. I like your modesty and you're right. Stay strong and I hope everything turns out well for you! Good luck!

  33. I want to become an actress because I think its fun and I love entertaining people. I remember watching the Disney Chanel shows and I would act as if I had my own show. I started acting around friends and watching them laugh and have a great time made me feel great about myself, knowing I was making them smile. While i was acting i knew that I loved entertaining people and that I wanted to become and actress.

  34. I want to be an actress because it's something I've always enjoyed and had a passion for. I've always appreciated the complex stories and the mysteries found in television and movies, especially how they're so relatable and can build beautiful portraits of life for us to ponder. Also, I want to be able to share stories and characters to more people than just with myself. Over the years, I realized that I enjoy entertaining crowds and making people happy. If I can make just one person happy then my job is done. I would rather spend 50+ hours a week doing something I love to benefit others by making them happy than sitting behind a desk doing desk work. I believe in chasing dreams before like chases you to do something else and not giving up even if you fail, once, twice, or thousands of times.

The best part of it is your understanding of following your dreams (which can bring you freedom) rather than the "standard hand-me-down" job lifestyle. I hope that if this is, as you feel, what you want, don't let anything that knocks you down, keep you down. When T. Edison was attempting to succeed, for his unsuccessful attempts he said this - "I have not failed. I've just found 10000 ways that won't work." As long as you strive, you will succeed.

  37. I feel like acting, for me, is a good way to understand other people. The struggles, happiness, heartache and many other emotions that come with a specific life/lifestyle. I also find that "acting", though it may at times be a difficult process to go through, brings me great joy and a sense of relief and pleasure. It is always amazing to create and embody someone else and expressively, stay true to that person through there thoughts, feelings, emotions and environmental reactions. Acting feels so.. right to me, that I left behind my life in a small town in Oklahoma at a young age to seek out a future in acting which I strive to reach. When I watch a movie with an actor, I completely enjoy, such as Johnny Deep, in any of the movies he plays in.. The sense of that character being there in reality, is where I find my inspiration.

  39. I actually do not want to become an actor but I’d much rather learn the skill of acting. Acting can be applied to so many aspects of life. It is good on the job and sometimes may be necessary in relationships. It could be helpful in a job interview or in my career of sales to be able to have acting skills. I believe we all act to some degree, but I want to be able to do it well. I am currently a part of a public speaking club called Toastmasters and many times I will tell stories. The stories are much more vivid when I try to act out what happened versus retelling what happened. I am also pursuing voice over acting as a career and I have found that it is more about acting than having a unique voice. Acting is a valuable skill and I would like to become great at it.

Rehearsing, saying them what to say and do, how to do it is great fun and it is great to see how they grow in developing roles. Now, I am not an actress and do not want to be one. I just want to learn the skills to do this better. Acting is very important and it helps us in every field of life, even to overcome our weaknesses. I do expect to learn a lot about this art.

  46. Acting is something I love doing, mostly because I get to experience being a different character with every role. I get to interact with other people who share the same passion as I do, but so far it's only been in school productions. I want to become an actress because playing the role of a character makes me happy, even happier when other people enjoy my performance. My family is still pushing me to go for medicine, but I just can't say that I'm more interested in that than in acting. I'm the type of person who can't keep doing the same thing everyday, that's why acting appeals so much to me. I get to do something a little bit different every other day. This could be my way of doing what I love and seeing other people love what I do.

However, i do realise that i require a lot of training. As much as i like acting, i must admit, i'm not a natural- but i am positive that i can learn, like many other successful actors out there

After watching all the actors/actress and then reading about them made me wonder how they put their lifestyle into their career. Ever since then I knew I HAD to dive into the AMAZING acting experience! I love to meet new people even though I'm a little shy at first, but I soon adapt and when I do I talk to them I act like I've known them forever:-)! I also enjoy making people smile and laugh:-). I hope to accomplish on how to make more of myself into the character I'm acting as.. my friends say I'm already really good at that, but I think I can still use a little more of it. I also hope to prove that anyone is able to anything as long as they have their heart set on it and are willing to take on the pros and cons of the subject. I want to prove that because I'm 12 years old and I get bullied at school sometimes because I'm too shy sometimes. I'm not going to give up on this dream ever, no matter what because this is one of the things I can feel safe and be myself while I'm doing it:-).

The way that actresses and actors put themselves in their characters shoes and the way that they link their inner selves with their characters is truly amazing.

I'm not interested in the money, or the fame. Simply having fun by doing something I love is more than enough for me and to one day be able to interact with other actors instead of acting monologues would be really nice :)

I am a rough looking overweight swamp rat from south east Georgia with the worst southern accent imaginable, but, I love nothing more than reaching down into myself and pulling out a very articulete English Nobleman or a flamboyant over the top transvestite that's obsessed with cats and butterflies. Taking on the very essence of another person from another place and time and being convincing is a challenge and I love it dearly. I guess at the end of the day, I love the challenge.

    1. Another me? I have found that the acting training can pull out emotions and our insecurities. Later with more training you will find to harness these emotions to make not another you but a better you. Learn to use these emotions to your advantage. If acting in front of a camera makes you feel alive. It's the power to move others through your work. It means you are doing your job if you can influence an audience. Keep training, keep studying, learn more. Don't be another me, be a best you that you can possibly be and that's worth more than being another you. #acting #passion
