What makes a great actor? Free Acting School Part 2 - 2015 edition

Part 2 of the Freedrama.net Free Acting School

Before looking at your own acting, look at other people's acting. If you are not able to attend a performance on stage, watch movies. Your first homework assignment is to go see a play or watch a movie.

What makes a great actor Free Acting School Part 2

When picking a movie to watch, think about a movie that had a major impact on you. What is your favorite movie and why? Is it the actors? Is there an actor in your favorite movie that you think is very good?

Watch a movie or see a play and pick an actor who you think was really good. What actor did you believe was "real"? Sometimes famous actors aren't the best actors. Was there an actor who was better than the well known person? Was there an actor who made you believe that they were really that character? Or was there an actor who totally changed who they were for the role and were different than you've ever seen them before?

Write in your journal about the actor you watched. Did they become the character? Why was their performance good? What made them better than other actors? Or did all the actors work together and perform as a team? Post your journal in the blog comments below.

NOTE: You must then respond to another actor in this class. Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and will NOT be considered for a paid position as an online monologue performer for Freedrama. You will hear from your instructor for this class starting on Part 5.

  1. The actor I choose was Jennifer Lawrence as she inspired me to become and actor when I watched The Hunger Games. She really embraced the roll of her character and her emotions were so realistic. She stood out to me because she transformed herself to be the character rather than just act as her. Sorry I haven't commented on others blog as there has been none so please don't penalise me for it.

    2. I couldn't agree more! Jennifer is exactly the person I had pictured playing Katniss and it is amazing how she started as a plain, totally afraid girl to end up being a fearless warrior.

    3. Totally agreed, Jennifer is an amazing actor and one of the kindest women of the world, she inspires so many people and it's just so beautiful <3

    5. 100% agree! She is an among actress and an amazing person off camera. She is perfect

    6. I agree totally with this response the actor that I'm choosing is Evan peters. The reason why I'm choosing him is because when he plays his character he acts as if he has been that character all of his life and he makes it look so realistic. When you look at him in interviews he is a totally different person and just the fact that he's able to do that and dug deep into his character is amazing. He was better than other actors because when you watch him act he makes you feel as if you are living his story and makes you cry during his performance.

    7. Jennifer is just... Jennifer! She's incredible and I couldn't think about a better Katniss. She transforms herself into the character, it's amazing!

    8. I totally agree with you, Jennifer is amazing! I honestly believe she's one of the best actresses around. I am a huge hunger game fan and read the books several times. And her playing Katniss was outstanding! I don't agree that Josh should have played Petta though, and I imagined Gale different too. But Jennifer as Katniss was spot on

    9. Okay so I watched People Will Talk Starring Cary Grant and Jean Crain. The actor I chose was Cary Grant. I had already seen some of his work starring along side Audrey Hepburn in the Charade. And this movie was amazing. Mr. Grant became the character he took the warmth that he always approached a character with and became this loving and nurturing doctor who helped a women who had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. I had never seen that side of Hollywood before. I was in shock when that scene came on because I thought they did not talk about that shame felled issue. Anyway I have to stop and give a great applause to the writers the way the writing made the movie flow was amazing. They knew how to right and hit the story telling points and the precise moment. Anyway Mr.Grant had this way of getting himself into trouble but then taking control of the argument and or situation and calming it all down with that beautiful strong voice. So in my opinion no actor out shined the other because they took their own eliments of character making and plugged them in with the other actor in the scene and made magic! I can honestly say that this movie was a team effort and it made for a stellar movie!

    10. Jennifer Lawrence is an all around superb actress. What I love about her is she doesn't let herself be type casted. Every character is different, exciting, and ultimately a journey we find ourselves on with her as well. Great choice, I love the hunger games!

    1. Al Pacino was certainly excellent in his role as Shylock from The Merchant of Venice. I really felt pity for his character who gets discriminated awfully just for being Jewish.

      Delete
    2. Al Pacino is most certainly on my list as well. He has perfected the art of method acting and one of the most convincing or compelling actors I can easily note to date in his films from Scarface, God Father, and even Devil's Advocate. Good choice Bazaz.

      Delete
    3. Al Pacino is another actor I find plays his roll well expesially in jack and Jill how in the film when Jill goes home he is in a play at that time and leaves to go see her he stays in character as a medevil knight and ones not break

      Delete
    4. I totally agree. Al Pacino is awesome at what he does. I promise it's almost like every character he portrays is him as if that is his true demeanor. Now that'[s good acting!

      Delete
    5. I'm not sure if i've ever seen an Al Pacino movie, but I have watch his speech in 'Scent of a Woman' many times. Such a powerful monologue whilst believably playing a blind person at the same time. He's great.

      Delete
  3. I picked 'Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix'. The 'Harry Potter' inspired me to become an actor. The characters in the movie also teach us really good values like bravery and friendship. The actors in the movie are very expressive and their personalities really suit their roles.

Each actor complimented the other actors very well and made the other actors’ acting better. All the actors were amazing in the movie but I would like to commend on three actors: Evanna Lynch and Imelda Staunton. Evanna Lynch was acting as Luna and she couldn't have been better being Luna. She exudes the aura of Luna and you can see she is in her own world, just like how Luna is all the time.

The actress who I believe was the best in this movie is Imelda Staunton who acted as Professor Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge is the most hated character in the Harry Potter series. I hated Umbridge so much while watching the movie that I forgot she was just an actress who was acting in the role. It was only after the movie, when someone said that Imelda was a really good actress, that I realised Umbridge wasn't a real person.

P.S. Mr Larson, I actually participated in this class last year but I haven’t finished the class. So, I would like to try again this year. :)

    2. I think all of the actors did a great job in their roles as well. I really enjoyed seeing how the indivdual characters changed, grown and matured throughout the series. Seeing how events change a persons perspective and seeing how an actor adapts their character role after adversity has always been insprational. Good movie choice.

  4. The 13th Warrior. Not because of one actor although Antonio Banderas is a respectful actor. It was the combined scene of the Viking Prayer in the end. The film was well researched touching on Norwegian heritage. My father was Norwegian and spoke of the country often. This film touched me and that prayer reminds of my roots. My father has passed. I now memorized that prayer for a monologue for auditions. It reaches deep in my soul to say that prayer and makes me vulnerable. This is what I want.

    1. I've never actually seen this movie, but from your review it sounds awesome! It's so cool when an element in a film connects with us on such a personal level.

    2. I like that movie too. The character at the end who died on the thrown staring off into the distance....that was a really strong scene to me.

      Delete
    3. That movie is one of my all times fav. I think the derictor of the movie did an spectacular job picking the location. The scene that I liked was when banderas was trying to figure out there language and they made that transition to english. It made you think like wow he picked up the languages fast and gave a little more detail and insight on banderas character. Who he was and the background he came from. A foreigner being underestimated on his ability to help there people. It has a good sign in that part too, just because they look different act different doesn't mean they are not flesh and blood like you and are capable of great things.

  5. I chose to watch the movie Tron - the original version. I first saw the movie as a little girl and it created a profound and lasting impression on my imagination! Jeff Bridges does a marvellous job taking us down the rabbit hole with him, going from complete incredulity as anyone would in that situation ("This isn't happening, it only thinks it's happening"), to realising his powers as a "User" and helping defeat the MCP. His character is engaging and likeable, and annoys the 'real' grown-ups in the story delightfully. One can especially appreciate his and the other actors performances (HELLO Bruce Boxleitner!) when you think about the fact that most of the set they filmed with was completely black, no lines or colours to create reference. Also, because they used 65mm film, many of the scenes where they characters are dialoguing with each other film each actor separately in order for them all to be in focus. All of them did a wonderful job bringing the digital fantasy world to life.

    1. Wow I didn't know that about the st and the filming of each character separately. You really have to have a focused mind in order to put things in the that aren't there, and to remember where they are and stuff. I've always liked Jeff Bridges and his dad Lloyd. I was sad when his dad died. His dad was great....really, really great.

  6. I am choosing Julianne Moore because she is one of the biggest inspirations for me. Lately,I watched the movie she was starring in ''Still Alice''. It is a really touching movie about alzheimer's disease that shows exactly how fast it can ruin a person's life and proves the myth of the disease appearing only in old people,as she was around 50. Julianne got completely into character. At first she was shocked, couldn't accept and didn't want to share the news with her family. She later told them and found ways to exercise her mind such as having a quiz in her phone with questions like ''what is the name of your oldest daughter'' and ''when is your birthday''. The most shocking fact is though, that when the time came that she couldn't reply any of these questions she had a plan. She recorded herself on her laptop, saying to her where the suicide pills were, but she couldn't even reach from the kitchen to her bedroom without forgetting what she wanted to do and her tears were not just acting tears, they seemed true and made me feel her confusion, the confusion of a former linguistics proffesor who can't even tie her shoes right now. Alec Baldwin who played her husband was also amazing,as he appeared to be cool with all this situation but he was actually as terrified as Julianne and couldn't lose her. Her ''kids'' also represented the various reactions someone could have to these news as her oldest daughter got crazy especially when she found out she has it too, her son was more calm, got a check up and was negative and her younger daughter didn't even want to know, but she moved in back home to take care of her mother although it appears they didn't have the best relationship. In the end Julianne forgets her younger daughter, played by Kristen Stewart who in the final scene is reading her a book she can't understand. Julianne or Alice died within a year after she was diagnosed and I am sure many people didn't know how bad it actually is and cared more about not being able to buy the new iPhone. This is why I love social movies and I love this one so much, because they have the ability to change the world. All of the actors who participated in this movie made it so special and made Alice's transformation from a really smart and confident to a helpless, confused woman, way more intense.

  8. I chooses the movie titanic the actor leonardo dicaprio at the start of the movie was gambling to try and get on the titanic for he does not have enough to buy a ticket. he wins and goes on the ship and meets a rich girl and falls in love but is forbid in because she I meant to be getting married to another man but she falls for Leonardo and the ship hits an iceberg and starts sinking they get trapped on the bottom deck and the gates get locked in the end Leonardo dies because of the freezing cold water. Leonardo had an impact on my life with this movie because he perfectly show how your life can change dramatically for better or for worse and that you should take your life day by day and to live every day as if it's your last. Leonardo really connects with the audience through emotions making us cry and see how love will always remain even when your partner dies. Leonardo plays jack that well that you believe that he is a real character and that the footage that they filmed is the real life actual footage even though it's not. Although I have wrote this on Leonardo the other actors and actresses have pulled together and made the whole movie come together and make it believable and as if the character are the real people that experienced the horror

  9. I chose the movie Scream, I know it's not one of the best movies ever, but it always had a major impact on me. Since I was little, I enjoy watching horror movies, they are the ones I like the most. So, years ago, my friend told me about that film, and after seeing it, I fell in love with Neve Campbell, the main character of the movie.
For me, her role is a difficult one, and after 4 movies of this saga, she keeps impresing me. She kind of inspired me to act, I also watched other of her films, and I love how she can interpret many different persons, and you still believe she is that character. So, my chosen actor is Neve Campbell, and I really hope I'm able to meet her someday :)

  10. The movie I watched last night was Welcome to the punch starring James McAvoy and Mark Strong. I really like these two actors, they are always on point. I don't think I would ever get tired of them. Especially Mark Strong. He can transform himself into whatever the character is. James McAvoy uses the same style of acting which isn't bad, we are supposed to go with what's best for us, but Mark Strong seems to be better at finding who the character is and bringing out.

My favorit movie of all time is Better of dead starring John Cusack. I don't know...it's just my favorite. I love movies. I wish I loved books as much as I love movies. I heard an actor say once in an interview " some of the best actors I've ever worked with were well read people." And after hearing that I wished that I had read books....I wish that I read books now, but I don't. I'm strictly a TV/ movie gal. My imagination is shaped by what I see on TV. So, I encourage all that read this to read, read, read as much as you can, so your craft of acting can be even more organic.

  17. I actually decided to use a series instead of a movie or play. The Vampire Diaries. The day this series piloted I have been hooked. Nina Dobrev brings Elena Gilbert to life in a whole knew meaning. Not only does she play the role of The sweet Elena Gilbert, but she also Brings Kathrine Patrova to life. Kathrine Patrova is a completely different character played by the same beautiful Nina Dobrev. Kathrine is A sour bitter soul and then there's Elena, she sweet and a bit of a humanitarian. Nina Makes the two characters really seem like they are two totally different people. All the characters were excellent in TVD so this was a very difficult decision.

  18. Movie that I chose is YENTL. Main actress is Barbra Streisand. The reason I chose this movie is because of the meaning behind the character and the way she had to show emotions as a woman and as a man. The character shows in that time woman were not allowed to learn about the Quaran (Koran). Her father was secretly teaching it to her and then unfortunately passed away. She disguised herself as a man and started going to school to learn about it. In the mean time becomes close friends with a man and starts to fall in love but was unable to show the feelings she had for this man. Then a woman comes along and starts to have feelings for Yentl and trying to show that she is a man has to act as though she was a man and even married the woman and never having intimacy physically but emotionally was connected to this woman and cared for her. Eventually the feelings that Yentl had for her male friend were getting stronger and her male friend started also having feelings for her too and was confused as to why he felt that way. She couldn’t take it any longer and shared that she was a woman and only wanted to learn. He shunned her for a brief moment only to return with a secret love affair. Continuing the charade of being a man still learning about the Quran…the male friend starts to also fall for Yentl’s wife. Eventually in the end Yentl decides that it is for the best that she leave and allow her friend and secret lover and her wife to pursue their relationship and continue learning what her father taught her.
To have to change into someone completely different so you can do something you want to do so badly and to hide something so big which is your true self is very hard to portray as a character. I felt myself feeling the pain and happiness while watching her grow through the movie…seeing her transform from woman to man then back to woman. One can only imagine in that time to not be able to learn and be who you are/

Every since I was young I enjoy being in front of a camera I enjoy writing stories writing school Plays, when I was in the 5th Grade I wrote our dare play all by myself as I got older my interested in acting grew. I was in all talent shows are drama classes n put on shows for my family. I enjoy making people laugh I enjoy being connected to a character and expressing my experience threw them. Weather its funny sad angry or dramatic. I love it all. I have also took classes with John Roberts Powers when I was younger and got lost of insight and help with acting. I want to be an actress so I can express myself threw others. Acting isnt fake to me.because in most movies they are things we all deal with in someway its just playing it out in the writers vision. This is something ive always wanted and im taking all stride to.get there. And I know I will

I recently seen this movie called Bad Seed. it was in black in white however that didn't distract me from the outstanding acting I witness. the movie is about a little girl name Rhoda who is a bad seed meaning she was a killer. however by the looks of her nicely braided pigtails no would suspect the little girl to be a killer. I like her character because she was so young but showcase her talent as being a evil little girl then jumping right into the sweet innocent role. it was awesome

  21. I chose Tom Hanksin the movie Forrest Gump. It's my favorite movie ever. The way he acts as he is the character is amazing. He pretends to be a dumb man who just conquers everything without even noticing. He just does it so well that when you are seeing the movie there's not even a moment when you stop to think that it's just a character. He's a role model.

    1. I personally think the best actors are the ones who can make people believe they are insane, dumb, high, drunk or incredibly emotional. It takes a lot of skill and confidence to be able to act like you're insane and make it believable.

    2. What I see as the genius of Tom Hanks in Forest Gump is that he portrayed a character that was technically "dumb" but he was so honest with himself and the character that Forest's intelligence actually has very little to do with the character. I think what everybody connects with is that Forest is aggressively honest, unabashed, and innocent. In short, Tom Hanks created a real person that we all wished we could be on some level. I agree that this performance is one of the best displays of acting in our lifetimes. Every actor should strive to create that level of authenticity, no matter how two-dimensional the character might seem at first.

  23. When reading this the first film that entered my head was 'Con Air', possibly my favourite film. But then I started to think about individual characters and which character really brought a film to life and created the whole mood and feeling which brought me to John Batchelor playing the role of 'Peeto' in the film 'Red Dog' - if you haven't seen it yet and love a good cry and laugh, or a dog's tale then this is a great one for you - in which he plays slightly camp but tough oil-worker who partially narrates the story of the famous Red Dog who he and his co-workers cared for so much. I remember him most in this film, even though all actors were superb he stood out for me as he created comedic, dramatic and tragic atmospheres when called upon which made the film what it was and is today - Brilliantly superb, funny, incredibly sad and overall overwhelming with emotions.

    1. I like the fact that two actors can connect in that level, what I don't like is when it gets serious and it messes with there acting. I say that in the job sight don't get involved with coworkers because the business part breaks down. I also believe that a lot of people don't want to try acting because of that, they are already in a relationship and are afraid that there couple will get mad and never fullfil there dream of acting.

  26. In the movie brave heart where William wallace tries to help his beauty marion escape from the English guards, and does his best to lead them away, with dismay. When he reaches the area where they said there vauws, and she doesn't show up. The moment where the high command gets ready to slit her throught. Without any words she identifies the feeling she must feel that your just about to die, and your looking for your love in the crowd franticly with your eyes, that feeling of your heart racing; those true emotions that she brought in that role will always be in my thoughts. I watch it over and over she did a very good job. I think it was based on the time frame clothes and getting to know that person that you are trying to portray. And that true love that was crushed by war.

  27. The actor was defiantly noticeably in character, even with his original antics in other films. You could tell that he had his character engaged. The performance was good because it was an alter ego, levelling with his comedic way. He brought life to the performance and character. Jims Carrys performance made the other actors seam more amateur when in character.

  28. There is an entire cast of great actors in Bernie, but they achieve very different things in the movie. The film stars Jack Black and his performance is especially remarkable. As an actor who became famous as an incredibly niche performer, you can't help but be impressed with how completely transformed he is in this film. I've never seen someone go so completely out of their comfort zones and do such an impeccable job. Everything in his manner became another person. By the end of the film, you have forgotten that Jack Black was in the movie, there is only Bernie.

What I'm most interested in, however, are the names you won't remember. Shirley MacLaine is somehow one of them. She is so seamless in her role as Marjorie you forget she's an actress at all. Her performance is so believable it's hard to remember that she's performing. This goes for the many actors that portrayed people from the town. They are mixed in with actual members of the community and I still can't tell who is an actor and who isn't. I think this is the unsung genius of the talent in this movie. The best performers I've ever seen end up more like the crew of a show; if they did their job right you won't realize they were there at all. To this end, the cast of Bernie is made up of an ensemble of actors that have done their job to the best of its ability; they've made you forget they were actors.

The more popular name in the film, however, is Matthew McConaughey. This is also interesting because although I think he did a very good job, his character seems to be the least believable. It's so calculated and so deliberate that it doesn't blur the line between performance and reality as well as others. This isn't helped by the fact that he's so recognizable as a famous actor. I just found it noteworthy that the biggest name couldn't integrate into the film as well.

  29. I watched God’s Not Dead and the character I analyzed was evangelist student, Josh Wheaton. He did a great job portraying his character and playing the student who wasn’t afraid to put God over everything, even if it meant failing a class, losing his girlfriend, disappointing his parents and even losing his ability to go into law. He risked losing it all, and even some for sure, just to prove the existence of God to his classmates and professor. The performance was good because when he was showing his emotions they felt sincere and real. I didn’t look at his performance as if he was acting, I saw him simply being that person in real life and that was the difference.

I think that all the actors worked together to make it a realistic performance and that each character delivered a believable representation of their character. I especially felt that when the Muslim father kicked out his daughter because she would not confess that Allah is God and said instead that Jesus Christ is her Lord and Savior and went to the cross to die for all mankind’s sins, and then resurrected to become a life-giving Spirit in order to live inside of her.

He is the central character in the series who is a great leader and earned everything by the strength of his character and he shows this quite well with his acting in the series which makes it easily relate to. He is a truly a great inspiration. All the actors work together to bring authenticity to the script and made it more lively and believable .

  32. The actor I have chosen is Johnny Depp and the movie choice is Alice in Wonderland. I have chosen this film because Mr. Depp is already my roll model actor for his ability to transform in all of his movies. In Edward scissor hands, he plays a shy, brilliant young man with a loony look, however; in Alice in Wonderland the "Crazy" is completely different as he embodies the already existing character, known as "The Mad Hatter." I love this performance because the first version of Alice in Wonderland was an animation movie, however; as Mr. Depp plays the roll, I feel like the book is coming to life all over again. The emotion behind his eyes and even the way he appeared to be "spaced out".. I say encore. He's completely MAD.. yet it is just a brilliant character performance.

  34. I chose the movie Viva Zapata staring Marlon Brando, who is one of my favorite actors. I watch this movie at least three or four times a year. The movie is a fictionalized account of the life of Mexican Revolutionary Emiliano Zapata from his peasant upbringing, through his rise to power in the early 1900s, to his death. When I first saw this movie I was a 9 year kid (1952). Brando played the part of Zapata so good that I thought that he was a really mexican, as a matter of fact while I watched the movie everything around me disappeared and I felt like I was there with him in Mexico. Ten years later I was in the army and stationed in Fort Sam Houston, Texas and visited Mexico almost every weekend and was back in Zapata's Mexico except, this time, in color!

  39. I chose Alan Cumming because I love both his acting on the big screen and in the famous musical, Cabaret. He is really a multifaceted actor that can do both Cabaret's emcee and Mr. Floop (from Spy Kids), a kids' movie character (or Nightcrawler, a religious mutant on XMen, for that matter). He's not very well known but I love that he's still working on plays like an adaptation of Macbeth.

  40. I have more than one character actually. Johnny Depp, Vin Diesel, "The Rock" Johnson, Terrence Howard, and many more. They've all played in various arrays of movies with each character always being different and nothing like the last. They are given roles, accept them, and play them as if they have actually lived those events in real life. Every movie they've played in required team efforts from all characters but also their individual roles brings those characters to life. I would love to work with every one of these characters one day soon. I find myself mimicking all of their roles at times.

The actors have been working together so long and have formed real life relationships that allow them to show chemistry and show "Real" friendship! Dylan O'brien is my favorite actor in the series and the way he portrays his character is inspiring. The character goes from funny to series and even to crazy and still is within his own bubbly personality. Sometimes I unconsciously act like the characters after watching an episode ow two and eventually my mom will ask me why I'm acting different. This fim really had a big impact on me acting wise and as well as in life. It taught me a valuable lesson, that its never too late to change your future. Everyone has to stumble through obstacles and pain in their life. And you will only grow from the trials and tribulations you face. Leo did an absolutely brilliant job. I cried a lot during the film. I think that was a film that really motivated me. I'm not even joking. This film made such an impression on me. Leo definitely became The Gatsby. He's acting and portrayal of the character was mesmerizing. He did such a good job in the film. The skill shown was fascinating. Yes there were a lot of amazing performances in the film, but the way Leo told the story, his struggle, his journey, made me believe that he was really The Gatsby. I feel very connected to the character. I felt like I knew him. I was sympathetic towards him. I mean during the final scene, I won't lie, I was in tears. K felt like I was with him on his journey throughout the film. It was impeccable.

The impact that this movie had on me over the years was that it would restore my faith in "love." It would give me hope again, for the male species.
Although Will is the star, I chose Amber because to me she has never been an actress in this movie. Her performance is so good that I always feel like I'm watching a movie with a cameo by Allegra Cole, playing herself. That's how well she became her character. She personifies the role. What makes her better, is that she doesn't appear to be acting. The entire cast worked well together, but she really clinched it.

  47. I chose Amber Marshall on "Heartland" she played Amy Fleming.
I chose her because after reading the series then watching the show I was shocked by her acting because she acted EXACTLY how I thought Amy would have! I can't imagine anyone else acting as Amy because Amber took her REAL LIFE and put into Amy's lifestyle which made them seem like Amber WAS Amy in reality:-)! I also think even though Amber did a great job I also think she had to work with the cast too. The reason i liked the character Amy was because of her background story of her mom, if the show didn't show the mom and Amy getting in the car crash and just skipped to Amy healing horses, the whole show wouldn't make so much sense. Also Graham Wardle as Ty in the show helped Amy seem real because of Ty and Amy's relationship's obstacles. Otherwise it would seem to unrealistic because it would seem like Amy's life was perfect. Amber didn't have to change her real self to much to become Amy because they both live on a farm in Alberta,Canada and have almost the same animals on the farm! All in 'll the Heartland cast helped Amber seem more like Amy, but Amber could have seemed like Amy with or without the cast, the cast just made her BETTER.

The opposing viewpoint was that he basically plays the same "character/role" in each of his movies, making him good at portraying a specific type of character. I disagree. He played the role of Ichigo Kurosaki from the T.V series Bleach. He acted so well, I forgot that he was doing a voice over. Johnny's performance was great because he added strong emotion, and a comedic feel to a two dimensional character. I'd say he was the best out of all them, not because of him being the main character but, the fact he draws the audience in. His character was Eric Draven; a man cruely murdered along with his girlfriend; a year later he gets to come back briefly to get justice vigilante style. He "was" Eric Draven. So much so that during the scene where he smashes the mirror and dons the mime makeup and burns the pictures of him and his fiance; I feel his torment, his pain, his seething anger. Or everytime he gets revenge on one of his murderers; I could feel his unbridled hatred and utter disgust towards them. Just like I can feel his euphoria as vengeance becomes his. No one else could have ever played this role far as I'm concerned.

  60. I am swaying from the directions slightly here by picking a television show instead of a movie/play. I do this because this particular actor in this particular show showed me something different. As I've said in the previous post and as many others, I have always been fascinated with this art. I also have a VERY curious mind and I enjoy learning about the real person to see who they are relevant to the part they play. Something that I often hear when watching an interview about the part they play is, they are a lot a like the character they portray. After knowing more about the actor, I watch the show/movie and see the similarities between the two (Actor and character) Recently, I was watching the TV show on Starz called "Power" . It is a show that I have heard of but never watched. Long story short, it is about a man that is one of the largest drug dealers in NY and he is looking for a way out. It is a big of a vulgar and violent show but the actor portraying Ghost "Omari Hardwick" plays this character to perfection. I pictures him carrying himself, and talking similarly. When watching his interview and learning more about him, I realized that he couldn't be more unlike his character. Now, when going back and watching the show, I see him in a different light. Now, I know that the real person couldn't be any more different but I while watching the show I go back to believing he truly is that person and I cannot picture him being anyone else. I proceeded to watch him in other roles that are nothing even close to the role "Ghost" and I am convinced all over again that he is that person. This opened my eyes to the art of acting. Omari truly transforms into his character. I, consciously trying to see the real him and mentally critiquing, completely believe in what he is doing and the character he is portraying. This TV show is not neccessarily my "cup of tea" but Omari Hardwick is a true artist and I strive to one day get to this level of professionalism and skill.

  61. I chose the movie, " Freedom Writers". about a class of kids who've been dealt bad cards in life and have to survive in the streets of Los Angeles. First, I want to say I chose this movie because its so relatable. There are many people out there who have to survive in the streets filled with gangs and racial profiling because there's no one there for them. I think every character brought something to the movie because their stories were so real, maybe because it was based on a true story but I felt connected to every single character. I would say from the movie I really enjoyed April Lee Hernadez character who was known as Eva Benitez. I really enjoyed her character because she felt so authentic and felt so raw (in a good way). She helped show how so many teens grow up with pain and anger because of where we grow up and the things we are surrounded by, she also showed how sometimes we do want to open up but its hard to trust so we instead release anger.I love the whole concept of the movie and actors because they help show how we don't have to be afraid of other races that aren't our own, instead we showed empower each other despite our skin color and race.

She lives with this lady believing that she's her biological mother. One incident that threw her to a police cell made her discover that the lady she's been living all along is her kidnapper but not her mother. Since her parents had been looking for her all along they rushed to the police station to find their long lost daughter. What amazes me about this series is how every character plays their part. I like the way Carter brings out her character, shes very outstanding and real to me. I also find her very captivating and her interaction with the new family couldn't have made it more real. She's struggling to fit in and everyone is happy to have her around. I also like how the real mother of carter plays her role, emotions, drama and everyone that surrounds the situation is brought out very clearly and is so believable.

She has the toughest job I think because of the range of emotions. In the beginning she was a housewife with little to do. As the movie progressed, she challenged herself to be more than her fears. It isn't easy to portray this, and the other emotions she dud, and remain in control of one's character. I will never forget the strength and determination she showed, nor will I forget "Towanda! It stars a host of truly talented A+ actors in my book (i.e . - Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and so many more).
At six, I understood what acting was and somehow knew, this cast made this story real. I want to highlight Shirley MacLaine's performance as the character "Ouiser". While she wasn't my favorite character, she was the most intriguing and memorable performance for me. She plays a crotchety old woman with walls up, hiding a heart of gold. The complexity of that character is what stood out for me. That was dynamic that floored me and mimicked what I was learning about in the world around me. People are complex! And here was this woman illustrating that via her performance so brilliantly. I think that's when I first said to myself, "People get to do that as a living. I want to do that!" (I was 6-7 and I probably didn't use those words but I knew it then and there).
The entire cast really worked well as a team (well 90% of them) but it was MacLaine's ability to convey human complexity that sold me. I could watch those performances over and over (and I did) and still get swept up the story with all the rapt and emotion as I had the very first time.

  66. I just finished watching the 1947 classic . The red house . Staring Edward G Robinson . I think Edward G is by far the best actor in the film because he was so believable which means to me that he was confident in the choices he made as an actor . Every film that i have watched him in he is always himself but in the characters shoes . So that to me is a great actor .

  67. I picked Miley Cyrus in the movie LOL. I know many people have there opinions on her but to me she is an inspiration. In the movie LOL she shows so many different emotions. She has always been an amazing actress but seeing her and Demi moore together was amazing the two play so well off of each other.

  68. I picked Will Smith in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. He is my inspiration. He brought the character alive on the screen. It never felt that he was over doing it, it was always just perfect. The he conveyed the story, it felt like he was telling his own story. Specially the emotional acts such as when he has to sleep in the toilet of the station, and then he starts crying literally brings goosebumps and you also cry with him. The way he takes care of his son and never lets any of his problems get to him. How hard he struggles to find happiness and live the life he has always dreams of. I can never get bored of that movie and can watch it a thousand more times. The way he connects with the audience is stupendous.

I am totally into sherlock when he is analyzing the clues feeling , when will i be such a genius to anlyaze small things that are going around in my life, when will i learn to analyze such minute things. He just pulls me into the character and when it ends, I am like. Why did it end. I just want to view more and more.

  70. My favorite actress in Jennifer Lawrence. She handles the spotlight so well and I feel like that helps her to give her best performance in every film. She has especially impressed me in some her more recent films. I feel like she's the kind of actress who can play anyone. From a troublemaker to an angel she gives her all and puts all of her emotions into all of her performances. When I watch movies that she is in I study her the entire time, how she executes things almost flawlessly. I strive to be as versatile as her in the acting business.

  71. I watched Meryl Streep's performance in Into The Woods. Of course she became the character but even when she becomes any of her characters they always seem realistic because she also is able to retain an element of herself within her characters. I feel her performance was great because of how she translated a character from paper to being realistic while still keeping that tinge of Meryl within her character. I don't feel anyone else could make a character come to life like that in the same realistic way where she is the character, and of course she did also feed off of the other actors she was working with and I think that just made her even better and more realistic and believable.

    1. It's amazing to think that Streep plays both Miranda Priestly in "The Devil Wears Prada" and Yolanda Johnson in "A Prairie Home Companion." I don't know how she can have herself in both of these characters, but I guess she's just an amazing actress.

  72. The Actor I chose was Jamie Foxx and Denzel Washington these are two great Actors I loved Jamie in Ray and Loved Denzel in the Equalizer. Jamie became ray Charles his walk his talk his smile amazing and that's what made him good. Denzel really became a caring character who you didn't want to play with he keep that character through the whole movie no slip ups and that's what made him good what made both Jamie and Denzel better than most Actors in these films is how they used their partners to keep their characters.

I want to follow in her footsteps, and play all the different rolls that she is able to play. The way she can switch from one rol to the other and do us so well greatly inspires me. I hope to become all she is and more. I am so excited to see what my future holds.

In Mrs doubt fire, though the concept was completely ridiculous(that was the point) you really sympathized with the father who was willing to pretend to be an old lady just to be with his kids.... In the movie, he had to act as a man who was acting as an old woman....and he had to act so convincingly that he had to fool his own kids and wife....

    2. Yes Robin Williams, He inspired many people despite his problems. He always put others first and did his best in all his roles to make people laugh instead of just pulling out and fighting his demons. A real role model for someone who is going through hardships like he did.

"Acting is not about being different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then findig myself in there."

Yeah, my favorite actress is Meryl Streep, especially in "Mamma mia". You know why. She is just God. I really don't know how she do this. She keep acting, singind and dancig no matter her age. And look like that.
Impossible, right? She is so gorgeous. I'm so proud that we have actors like her. When i whatch her movies, i bristle. She is the best thing that happened to the film industry and to the wolrd. ONE AND ONLY, QUENE!

  77. The actor I choose is Johnny Depp. The roles that he portrays, the effort that goes into each character shows, especially since i started watching The Pirates of the Caribbean. Since young, I only knew him as Captain Jack Sparrow. He was even more famous as his role than what he is himself. He was completely different in Transcendence, as now he doesn't have a physical character to play around with but more of a voice acting role. Plus the actions from each character, from a pirate to a scientist. As he says "With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying." Which goes and ties in with what what Meryl Streep said "Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there." There is always a part of you in the characters that you portray.

  78. The movie I chose was The Proposal and the actor that stood out to me the most was defiantly Sandra Bullock and not just because she was the lead. I love all of her movies because in everyone she knows how to really get inside of the character and she defiantly did that in this one. It was the perfect balance of funny and emotional which is very hard to do for any actor especially a lead. She really inspires me to find balance in my acting and really feel the character.

  79. I watched Nick and Norah's infinite playlist. I love both Kat Dennings and Michael Cera as actors. Their ability to play this shy quirky individual intrigues me. I think it intrigues me because it is challenging for me to play. They both had a great on camera chemistry which had me blushing at their intimate moments and cringing at their embarrassing ones. I fell in love with their characters and found myself paying attention to how they embraced the awkward so moments making it charming and relatable. I think that was the best part, how relatable their characters was.

  80. A movie that I have watched and I chose to discuss is Pursuit of Happiness starring Will Smith. This movie has so much passion and power. This movie tells a story of a man who struggles to raise his child and how we prospers. Watching this film, you grow attached to the character. Will Smith takes this role and he became his character. Every scene you can feel the pain and the climatic atmosphere that the writer illustrates. Will Smith played an excellent role. Not only did he capture each scene with passion, he made the role seem as if this was a story based off his own life.

  82. One of my favorite movies is “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” but I don’t own it and I didn’t want to pay for it. I do own “The Fellowship of the Ring,” so I watched that instead. I like these movies because they are classic. There is no swearing. There are just real stories and real acting. (I’m not a fan of some of the violence, but I can fast forward through those parts when watching on my own.) I really like Sir Ian McKellen’s performance as Gandalf.

I watched the film and was surprised by who I thought the best actors were. I was most impressed by Cate Blanchett (I guess that’s not surprising, she did win an Oscar after all!), Liv Tyler, Ian Holm, and Sean Bean. When watching each of these actors I felt that they really were their characters. Blanchett’s narration of the opening sequence is totally brilliant. And Liv Tyler’s transformation from the cute band assistant in “That Thing You Do!” to a centuries old elf princess is amazing. Her chemistry with Viggo Mortensen was really good. I felt like their romance was very believable. I also thought Blanchett and Tyler’s performances were all the more impressive due to the fact that they’re Australian and American. Their accents both sounded totally British to me.

Some actors did better when they were paired with other actors. Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee were really good together. This makes sense, since they are both older, highly experienced English actors. One of the thing that surprised me was that I didn’t feel Sir McKellen was that good at the beginning of the film. This also makes sense, though, when you consider how the movie was filmed: “McKellen did not become that close to the lead Hobbit actors, as he generally worked with their scale doubles, but when Christopher Lee arrived in February, they became very friendly. (‘Principal photography of The Lord of the Rings film series,’ Wikipedia)” Apparently rapport between actors is an important part of their performances.

  83. Eragon was my favorite movie because I can relate to the boy, portrayed by Ed Speleers. Eragon went from an uncertain farm boy to a confident, brave man. He defeated an evil shade with power that he had no idea he had. I was pretending I was him, which made me enter the story, feel what he may have felt. It was thrilling, happy, sad, but full of life lessons and hope. It made me feel like I to could overcome my own obstacles. He also overcame the loss of Brom, a man who may of been like a teacher, or father to Eragon. An uncle who raised him, and a friend and cousin. He stuck to the mission and with training, support from his new friends, and the love and bond of his lovely she dragon.

This movie for me represents good vs evil, hope, friendship, strength of heart, and courage in a hopeless situation. The story, the actors, scenery, and creatures all seem to be an intricately placed. remove one and it all comes crashing down. It was amazing. Not a lot like the books I'm told, but an entertaining story none the less.

Eragon could easily of been me, real. Most of the known actors I have seen do similar roles before. Though I hadn't seen Robert Carlyle do a fantasy type role before Eragon. I think all of the actors worked well together. As any good play requires all actors on task to make it work. I'm not sure if it was Ed Speleers apparent innocence or a natural ability that made him such a good actor in this movie.

Al Pacino's speech in the end was memorable and I felt each word he was saying going right in my heart and remaing there forever. Then there's that scene when he is about to kill himself. All the emotions were so strong and it is impossible not to be moved when you see it. He portrayed perfectly the blind man whose life had been changed in good, who got a chance. Al Pacino is a legend and the emotions he shares will stay with us till the end of time.

  86. Wow it was really hard for me to pick a favorite actor so hopefully it's ok if I touch on some good things for 2 of them... The first is Jake Gyllenhaal. I think the first movie I ever saw him in was "Bubble Boy" and it amazes me that he can play that goofy innocent Jimmy but then also play creepy messed up Donnie Darko. The most recent movie of his that I've seen is "Nightcrawler". That was amazing he was wonderful. When he broke the mirror in that one scene I got chill bumps :) hes great! Another actor I really like is Sebastian Stan. Hes got a reputation of being cast as the angsty or gay characters. (sometimes both) He does such a good job though! He's not afraid to completely become the character and just go for it. He never fails to make me cry and I'm definitely not a cryer!

  87. I've picked "The Breakfast Club" a very famous but nonetheless amazing movie. This movie to me earns all of the praise it gets, preaching of the teenage struggle and angst in a way that would be relatable to everyone. I watched Judd Nelson ("Bender"). His performance re-inspired my want to become an actress. It is one thing to portray a character, but to portray one to the point where the audience feels and cries and laughs along with said character is a whole different line. I feel like Nelson's portrayal of Bender ticked all of this. You feel his pain and the moments where he lightens up or falls down a little. The cast worked together to produce an array of emotions in the picture that portrays a saturday detention, but the character of Bender stands out a little more as he is the "bad boy" that seems to bring everyone together at the end.

I love dramatic performances because it gives me the chance to show myself as a serious actress. She is a great actress because she made her character able to be "innocent" but "strong", "Vulnerable" yet "Powerful". She also shows her acting range when she is comedic and dramatic and when she shows pure love to her people. ( in the show.)

  90. Hilary Swank from Million Dollar Baby oh how I wish it was just another feel good drama of rags to riches but then maybe I wouldnt have liked it so much. I think Hilary totally becomes the character surrounded by Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman the story is totally believable and strikes a nerve at how cruel life can be sometimes. I love the grittiness of the story and I think its real acting when it doesnt come across as acting but seems so perfectly natural. Every moment of the story was believable I felt her joy and disappointment. I love how naturally the conversations flowed and the silent moments. A really impressive beautiful sad story. I hesitated to watch the final fight wishing she would just turn it down and live to fight another day.

  91. I decided to watch The Best Of Me and all four of the actors which made the film as good as it was, is James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Liana Liberato and Luke Bracey. They aren't very well known but the connection that I got between the two female actors and the two male actors from the past and the present was just spine shivering. I probably cried at least 3 times watching the film because of how well I got to know the characters and how they expressed themselves throughout the film. You could feel as if you were with them on the journey of their relationship because the lines that they have read had much more of an affect by the way they read them. I found it stunning and beautiful even though I hadn't seen many of the actors before.

  94. I chose Christopher Gorham. His character on Covert Affairs (tv series) as the blind CIA agent Auggie was believable. While watching I tend to forget that he is only acting, he isn't really blind. Acting out an emotion is one thing, but take away a sense and make that believable is another. His portrayal of a Special Forces soldier who was on a mission in Iraq, where he lost his brothers in arms and eyesight, was spot on and invoked empathy. All the feelings and emotions associated with losing a team member, a career as a soldier, and eyesight, the anger, wanting revenge, the sadness, frustration, guilt, as well as a life goes on, triumpth, happy go lucky attitude is all congruently displayed during his performance. I felt his character was real and believable. I had seen some of his other performaces and didn't right away that it was the same actor.

He conveys such emotion especially at certain parts near the end that really make you want to burst into tears, whitch is why he has had such a great career. Even in movies that turned out to be sort of a bust he shines through the other actors and makes the movie more bearable. The Fall is a gorgeous movie.

He has an attitude about him which in the past had him cast as a Hollywood black sheep but I feel that is part of his appeal. He acts in a way that he comes across very raw yet real at the same time. It's as if he isn't trying very hard. He plays Cyrus Paice who is the antagonist to Slyvester Stallone's character Jack Carter. Throughout the movie he has a few interactions with Stallone that are very intense and deep. They play off of eachother well and the intense tension is obvious. I love how this movie was filmed, the soundtrack, ambience etc.

I thought it was really great how he and Jamie worked together to make it humorous, and emotional at different moments in the movie, It always amazes me when actors play the role of disabilities, or limitations. How they do it, I hope to find out someday, but Jamie was astounding wile playing Smike. I love that movie, and all the actors in it. :)

  99. The actor who has most recently caught my attention, is the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. I first saw him in a movie called A Royal Affair. The first thing that struck me about Mads was his look. He is not the usual Hollywood type, that we here in America are used to seeing. Once I got past that, his acting pulled me in. Not only can he convey thoughts and emotions through lines, his facial expressions are sometimes all that is needed. And you understand completely, without him saying a word. Since seeing A Royal Affair, I've seen several more of his movies, The Necessary Death of Charley Countryman, is another stellar performance, that stands out in my mind. He is a huge jerk, but something about his character makes you understand that like us all, he just wants to love and be loved. Most recently Mr. Mikkelsen starred as Hannibal Lecter in the TV show Hannibal. If you've seen the show, you know what I mean. I can't even think of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal anymore.
