Seeking Online Performer for Freedrama YouTube Channel - Paid Acting Gig - Help Wanted - Now Hiring Actors

Currently I am seeking actors to perform monologues for our YouTube channel.  The ideal actor is one who is active on social media and can help generate views of their videos by promoting it online.

I will pay $50 for the first monologue and then if the actor can help generate enough views for the video, then they will be hired to do more.

If you are interested, please email doug@freedrama.net and include video acting samples you've done (using your own equipment or equipment you have access to).  Also include links to social media account you are actively involved in.  The ideal actor should have an active online community they are a part of.

Post any questions you have below.

Here are some examples of video monologues I have hired actors for:

Seneca Baldwin also earned extra by being part of the Freedrama Acting School and winning the Top Student Award for June 2015.

Check out the Freedrama Acting School here: http://www.freedrama.net/acting.html - Completing my Free Online School for Actors can increase your chance of getting selected if you are a newer actor without experience.

And here are some additional tips on ways to get selected:

- Subscribe to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/freedramanet

- Leave positive comments on the videos of my other actors https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2BsnBkDR4ySJM0ohPGijGYtZNcuqQvXz

- Retweet posts by @freedrama on Twitter https://twitter.com/freedrama

- Share Freedrama Blog posts and comment http://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/

Basically, I am looking for online actors who want to get involved and promote the Freedrama website.

For permission to use this play, contact doug@freedrama.net (please include the title "Police Line Do Not Cross" in the request).

(People are gathered outside a hospital.
A yellow police tape is holding them upstage)

KELLY
What’s going on?

HANK
Something happened.

KELLY
I can see that. WHAT happened?

HANK
I don’t know.

KELLY
Anyone here know what’s going on?

(No one knows)

KELLY
I’m going in.

OFFICER
Wait a minute… what are you doing?

KELLY
I work here.

OFFICER
You can’t go in there.

KELLY
What’s happening?

(OFFICER gets a radio call)

OFFICER
Get back behind the tape.

(OFFICER runs off)

(People have cell phones out)

KELLY
What are you all doing?

HANK
Hoping we get something on video.

KELLY
That all you care you about?  Aren’t you worried?

HANK
Worried I’ll miss all the action.

KELLY
People could be hurt in there… or sick… I hate not knowing what is going on.

HANK
Look! There’s people coming out.

(He and others start recording with their cell phones)

See any blood?

KELLY
You’re sick.

HANK
Oh! Say that again on camera.

(KELLY takes his phone and throws it)

KELLY
There’s an aerial shot for you.

HANK
Hey!

(he chases after his phone)

OFFICER
Show me your hands!
You! Drop it! Now!

(EDNA enters with stuff in her arms and freaks out and doesn’t know what to do)

KELLY
Stop! Stop! Don’t shoot her!

(KELLY runs and defends EDNA)

OFFICER
What are you doing? I could have shot you.

HANK
Shoot her, please!  I need something good for YouTube.  Shoot, shoot, shoot!

OFFICER
Back off you…

HANK
I’m being oppressed!  The cop is man-handling me… I’m being oppressed!

(OFFICER drags off HANK)

KELLY
It’s okay, Edna. He won’t hurt you.

EDNA
I had to save my collection. I couldn’t let anything happen to my collection.

KELLY
I know your collection is very important to you.

EDNA
I should have left them at home… I thought they’d be safe at work. Everyone loves seeing them… I love sharing them, but I never thought they’d be in danger.

KELLY
What’s happening in there?  What’s going on?

(OFFICER returns)

EDNA
I don’t know… there was lots of screaming and everyone starting running.  Someone grabbed me and told me to get out.  I couldn’t leave my collection though.

OFFICER
You could have been hurt though lady.  You should drop everything and run when there is danger. And keep your hands free.  I could have shot you. I didn’t know if you had a weapon.

KELLY
Hey, wait a minute. You don’t even have a gun.

OFFICER
Shhh!  Not so loud.

KELLY
What’s the deal?

OFFICER
I’m in training okay. But they wanted every available officer here. That’s why I’m not inside though.

KELLY
I really wish I knew what was going on. Are you sure didn’t see anything Edna?

EDNA
There was something weird.  There was this guy who kept pacing around the hallways. He seemed very agitated. He’d sit for a moment and then jump up and pace. He tried reading a magazine and then threw it. He was scary.

OFFICER
Did you report it?

EDNA
What? No, I didn’t think it was my job to.

OFFICER
It’s everyone’s job to report something suspicious.

EDNA
I didn’t want to make waves. I didn’t want to cause problems.

OFFICER
What if that’s the guy that causing problems in there now… if you’d reported him…

KELLY
Leave her alone. Can’t you see she’s already upset?

OFFICER
Fine… take her through… get her out of here.

(HANK has snuck back and has his phone out again recording)

EDNA
Oh, no. I left one.

OFFICER
One what?

KELLY
Something from her collection.

EDNA
I must have dropped one. I have to go back.

OFFICER
No way.

EDNA
I can’t leave it behind.

(EDNA runs back)

OFFICER
Stop!

(OFFICER chases her)

HANK
Why doesn’t he shoot her?!

KELLY
Why doesn’t he shoot you?

HANK
I’d settle for that.

KELLY
I think there’s a much better angle for you… over there.

(Takes his phone and throws it)

HANK
Stop doing that?!

(HANK goes after his phone – OFFICER enters carrying EDNA or trying to – or pulling her)

EDNA
Leave me alone!  Let me go!

(EDNA escapes – OFFICER goes – OFFICER returns with her collection)

EDNA
Give those back.

(OFFICER runs and EDNA chases)

HANK
Did I miss anything?

KELLY
You missed everything.  You can go home now.

HANK
I think you’re lying.

KELLY
I think you’re annoying.

HANK
I don’t like you.

KELLY
I don’t like you either.

(OFFICER returns – he still has Edna’s collection – EDNA is sneaking through the crowd and hides behind HANK)

OFFICER
Where did she go?

(EDNA jumps out)

EDNA
Got you!

OFFICER
Hey!

HANK
This is good!

OFFICER
I can arrest you for this!

EDNA
Go ahead and try!

(OFFICER falls down tired. EDNA gets her collection and runs)

KELLY
Maybe you should consider a different career choice.

OFFICER
Maybe… I like cooking… maybe I could be a chef or something.

HANK
Go get her!  She’s getting away!  We can do like an action shot with you chasing her.  When you catch her, knock her down and kick her or something.

OFFICER
As long as she doesn’t go back inside, I’m done with her.

(EDNA runs back inside)

EDNA
I’m coming!

OFFICER
She went back inside.

(OFFICER chases after her)

(EDNA returns)

EDNA
It’s the scary man!

OFFICER
Stop right there!

HANK
He’s running.

OFFICER
Why does no one listen to me?

HANK
Go get him!  Shoot him!  Something… please!

(OFFICER runs – HANK tries to follow)

HANK
Chase scene!

(KELLY grabs his phone)

KELLY
He went that-a-way.

(KELLY throws it the other direction)

HANK
Curse you!

KELLY
So are you sure that’s the guy?

EDNA
Yup.

KELLY
I wonder what he did?

EDNA
I don’t know.

KELLY
Where’d you put your collection?

EDNA
In my car.

KELLY
How’d you get a parking spot so close to the hospital?

EDNA
I have a special sticker.

KELLY
How’d you get that?

EDNA
I will never tell.

KELLY
Look!  He got him!

EDNA
I don’t believe it.

KELLY
It looks like he tripped and fell on him.

EDNA
Still caught him.

KELLY
The real police are there now.  They’re cuffing the crook.

EDNA
Aw… how cute.  They are patting our guy on the back and shaking his hand.

KELLY
He’s a hero.

EDNA
Our hero.

KELLY
Local boy done good.

EDNA
I want his autograph.

(OFFICER returns)

OFFICER
Alright everyone. Nothing to see here.  Back about your business.

(any extras leave)

KELLY
You stopped the bad guy.

OFFICER
I found this too.

EDNA
My rare wooggie whitchet! You found it! You’re the greatest!

KELLY
Maybe you did pick the right career after all.

OFFICER
Maybe I did.

KELLY
We’re lucky to have you protecting us.

OFFICER
Just doing my job.

EDNA
Sorry I was so difficult… I feel bad now… want to arrest me?

(EDNA holds out her hands)

OFFICER
I’ll let you off with a warning.

EDNA
You sure? I’ve been very bad.

OFFICER
I’m sure.

(OFFICER and EDNA leave)

(HANK runs back in)

HANK
Did I miss anything?

KELLY
You missed everything.

HANK
Really?

KELLY
But it was a happy ending.

HANK
I hate happy endings. I’m glad I missed it.

KELLY
Did I break your phone?

HANK
Maybe.

KELLY
Good. (KELLY leaves and HANK calls after her)

HANK (CONT.)
I thought nurses were supposed to be nice.

(KELLY returns and throws his phone again and then leaves)

HANK
I guess not.

We are the Phoenix - free romantic monologue for solo actor performance, audition, workshop, competition or classroom - love poem

"We are the Phoenix"
by D. M. Larson

For permission to use this script, please contact doug@freedrama.net (please include the title "We are the Phoenix" in your request).

PHOENIX

We are born alone, separate… in pieces… missing something of ourselves.

So we are born searching, looking for something to make us complete.

We wander the darkness of our lives, seeking light.

A single flame burned in my future.  Waiting… waiting… waiting for me to find you.

But I was blind and didn’t see you even though you were near.  But I had grown so cold, entombed in ice.  I felt nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing around me.

But your flame burned bright. At last, I could feel the heat… I desired it…  I needed your fire to melt the ice that caged my spirit.

Your warmth slowly filled me, awakening my spirit and releasing my soul. A soul that now belongs to you. A soul that is a part of you and you of me. Expanding a soul that we were meant to share together.

You are the piece that completed me.

With you, I was reborn, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

I was burned by my past, damaged and falling apart into dust… but you were the fire that gave me new life… with you I was reborn.  I live again, more mighty than before… more powerful… more vibrant.

There is no end to you and no beginning to me… we are infinity… forever dancing in an eternal embrace. You are the flames that dance around my heart.  You burn life into my soul and we soar together on wings made of the sun, forever burning with love.

Teaching Improvisational Theatre Part 1 - drama games - improv - #education

"Teaching Improvisational Theatre" (Part 1) by Todd Hermanson (Drama Games student)

After performing Improvisational Theatre during college I moved to New York City to be an actor. While there I continued to be an improvisational comedy performer. We would play numerous games with a goal to make the audience laugh. Always make the audience laugh. That was the sign of success for our performances. This need for laughter would be a struggle I would encounter as I continued to teach drama games into my later teaching career. After giving up my life on the road as a professional actor I was pulled in the direction of education.

Part of my training as a teacher was focused on after school and evening classes for students from 3 years to 60 years old. My main sources for my lessons were Improvisational Theatre games. Because of my training in improvisation, I focused on creating an ensemble with in a class. Firstly, I would try and break down barriers to success by making students comfortable with each other, as any teacher could do in any other class.

I have always thought that laughter can be a sign of risk. By making all students laugh and be silly it made the students feel comfortable with each other. With this comfort came less fear to take risks. And risk taking in the theatre world promotes the growth of the artist and their craft. After years of teaching these extra curricular classes I attained my teaching license and started substitute teaching. It was in these classes that I was able to utilize my previous experience as an improvisation comedy actor.

Due to the temporary nature of substitute teaching, I was to come in one or two days at a time. Due to this, I felt pressure to let the kids have a good time, not just down time. My main focus was to make the class laugh. But, hopefully, I did this with the activities that I taught and my own sense of humor.

Some of my favorite activities were ones that can now be found on the successful television program “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”

Emotions – Performers’ emotions are changed during the course of a scene. They must use the emotion as they continue the scene.

Props – Actors are given props that they use to create small scenes and use the prop as an object other than what it actually was created.

Fill in the blank – During the course of the scene actors are paused and the audience fill in the blank of the line. The scene continues justifying this new information.

Alphabet- A scene is performed and the lines of dialogue start with the next letter in the alphabet.

Expert Translation – An expert in a subject discusses their expertise in a foreign language. A translator then deciphers the statements of the expert.

Questions only – A scene is performed where which the dialogue is only questions.

Whose line – During the course of the scene the actors pull out slips of paper that have sayings that they must incorporate into the scene.

Fortunately, due to the recommendations I received because of my tendency to “entertain” I was able to land a couple of long term teaching assignments where improvisation was still effective but I was able to do activities that were more long term, such as scene work and short group theatre pieces. But due to this need to entertain I had pigeonholed myself into only doing Drama Games that I thought entertaining or comedic.

As I have mentioned previously, this need to entertain was the catalyst for some changes in my teaching style. This opportunity arose when I accepted a teaching position for a full time high school teaching job, that I have just completed my 17th year. I will discuss these challenges in my next post.

Why an acting agent isn't the answer to all your problems - quick acting tip #3

http://www.freedrama.net/acting.html quick tips for actors #3

New actors often think an agent is an answer is to all their problems. Once you have an agent, will you make it big? Nope. There is still a lot of hard work ahead. An agent will help but it is still up to you to work hard and make opportunities for yourself. An agent is part of the team but you need to be the one out there creating work for yourself and making connections.

For more help and tips go to the link at the top of the description. There is a link on the page to a free online acting class with feedback from an Emmy Award winner.

Are you looking for an acting agent? Here are some tips for new actors (Freedrama tip #2)

http://www.freedrama.net/acting.html Free tips for Actors (acting tip #2)

Are you looking for an agent?  Here are some tips:

Don't approach one until you have some experience.  Try to get some paid work (like commercials) first.  Build your resume and prove to the agent you can make some money.

You can also get experience doing school plays and community theatre.  Casting directors actually like stage experience.  Stage actors work hard! I've done both and stage acting pushed me to my limits (but I loved it).

And beware of agents who want money up front.  Good agents should only take a percentage.  They might charge for headshots or a portfolio website but those should be optional.  Acting lessons should not be required either (optional as well).  Check SAG's website (Screen Actor's Guild) for a list of approved agents.

BONES
This is it. This is my chance to get off the stinky old rust bucket. Take as long as I need. Well I need a long time. A really long time... First thing I'll find is a cow to get myself some fresh milk. Then I'll buy a pretty gown all made of comfy silk. And I'll take a warm bath for nearly half a day. Then find a feather bed to sleep the night away. And the next day too. "Land ho! Land ho! That's where I want to go. Land ho! Land ho! I will set the world aglow."
