Welcome to the Freedrama.net Free Acting School. This is the Level 1 Acting Class. Students will complete both the Level 1 and Level 2 classes will be considered for a paid monologue performer for our YouTube page.
Free Acting School online

So you would like to be an actor?

The first step is to figure out why you want to be one. Ask yourself, "Why do I want to be an actor?"

If you want to be rich and famous, that can be a long and difficult road that requires a lot of luck.

But if you want to be an actor because it is fun or it brings you joy or you like entertaining others, then this could be the right choice for you.

Decide why you want to act, figure out why it is important to you and what kind of actor you want to be.

STEP ONE: KEEP A JOURNAL (POST BELOW)

To get a certificate of completion for this class please keep a journal for each day you do this acting class online.

You'll share this journal with your instructor (D. M. Larson) and others in the blog below. Day 1 question: "Why do you want to be an actor?"

You must then respond to another actor's post in this course.  Give words of encouragement. Share your experiences. Or discuss acting.  Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and will NOT be considered for a paid acting job as a monologue performer for our YouTube page. You will start hearing from your instructor on Part 5 of these course as you prepare two monologues for your final exam.

Don't act like a pirate in these discussions.

FINAL EXAM (after completing the first four lessons of the course):

You will also need to complete two recordings of yourself acting (audio or video) and make changes to each after getting suggestions from your instructor. You want these to be contrasting monologues - one drama and one comedy - in order to show your range.  You must select a monologue from one of these links:

After you post your journal below, go to Day 2 of the acting school:

    1. I also feel that way! The feeling you get when you see your favorite shows, and just wish you could be there, acting and having that life experience. It's amazing how people can make us dream and feel so many things, I know for sure if we both strive forward, work really, really hard, and never give up, we'll both make it!!!

  2. The reason why I want to be an actor is because I love the idea of being able to express myself in many different forms. This would be another outlet for me as an artist to show my creativity. A funny thing I find myself doing that I do without thinking is mimicking what I see an actor do or say if I find it funny or even a challenging to say in the same way they just did. I've never acted professionally or taken any classes but I can see some potential in a acting career for me. Well I hope there is a potential.

  3. Why do I want to be an actor? Let's see, why for fame and glory, why else? Just kidding. A little humor never hurts. In all seriousness I want to act because from a young age I've loved acting out scenes/characters in movies. I catch myself constantly using famous one liners to express myself in daily life. I also find laughter infectious, love to make people laugh, generally feel good. Getting to work with great talent, making an audience have such an experience that they forget their troubles if only for a while; not to mention traveling the world. I mean; What's not to love?

    1. Firstly, I appreciate beginning with a joke and I was relieved to see you were joking!! Your reasons are genuine and I can appreciate that. I too find laughter infectious and there's nothing better than finding yourself laughing simply because you see others laughing. Earl, I hope you are successful in this venture, I am rooting for you!!!!

    2. Wow Earl, First of all I really loved your positive attitude towards your life. It's beautiful and rare. You have a great sense of humour and a nice comic timing, that you have proved. Nowadays people are living a stressful life, they need you badly. All the best.

  4. Why do I want to become an actor? Like nearly every child, I've dreamt of it my entire life. Watching movies at a young age and dreaming of being in the spot light one day. This dream seemed unobtainable as I grew older. I knew everyone wanted to be an actor and it seemed impossible. Then, I realized that my reasons were different then most. When you hear other people that are aspiring to become an actor, they give you the oh so cliché reasons. They want to be famous, they want to be rich etc. But, if they found an alternative way to achieve fame and money, they would forget about acting in a heartbeat. This is where I, and most of the people here differ. I (we) want to become actors for a variety of reasons but most steaming from the same place. We want to entertain, we want to love our career and we want to achieve a dream. This is why I want to become an actor. I want to entertain, I want to inspire, I want to become an actor

    1. I definitely agree, Everyone considers acting as a " get rich quick job" or as a dream job that is impossible to achieve so they shy away from the idea of putting in the work. I'm glad to see there is some people who have the same ambition and motivation for becoming an actor other then becoming rich. I also want to inspire and entertain. We're on the same team!

    2. That is what it is all about to me also . It isn't like people think you walk in they love you boom your a star , it takes a lot of hard work dedication , I am totaly pulling for you .

    3. I think Hollywood has a glamour sude, but you never see the harsh realities so many people face as they arrive for success. There are many angles and steps to being an actor. I admire the celebs who worked hard to have an education, gain experience, and stay away from the constant burn of the negative spotlight. I hope to find my path and be more than I inagined. I don't need fame, and I could work many jobs that pay the bills. Acting isn't just a job, it's much more.

    4. Mr. Cruz, your line ["We want to entertain, we want to love our career and we want to achieve a dream."] hit the nail on the head for me. I NEED to love what I do and there is just nothing that compares to acting for me. So, like you said, it's not the fame or fortune [Oh, I would certainly take a fortune] ... If I never made a dime, acting would still be my dream! All the best to you and much success in your journey!

      Delete
    5. Anthony, that is just the same way I feel. Acting is not a way to become rich and famous. It's to enjoy your job and inspire other people. Good luck to you!

    6. I agree 100%! Being younger and already having so many no's thrown in my face definitely make the "unattainable" aspect so much harder. Especially when my parents hope that I want to be a doctor and college is right around the corner for me!

    7. Hi Anthony,
I am in totally agreement of what you said. Some people don't realize that acting is so much more than fame or riches. I wish you the best of luck. In fact, I wish all of us the best of luck. We have a hard battle ahead of us and I know we are going to fight it through and accomplish our dreams. Don't let anyone tell you that you "can't". Don't let anyone bring you down. Just work hard, keep your mind focus, pray, and by God's grace you will achieve your dreams.

    10. I agree with you! When the acting posses you and you allow it to take you over from deep with in your soul, it is all you want to do for the rest of your breathing span. The fact that I can be able to share a lot with the world through my entertainment just inspires me a lot. I for one decided to start out as an extra in small films. I like to translet what really happens in life to the world through my entertainment. And nothing gives me more joy than getting emotionally, mentally and spiritually attached to people which is exactly what acting and entertaining does for me. As I say acting is me and I am acting.

I admire the fact that although they were big stars they kept their movies clean and family friendly. 10. Acting is a way of pushing myself to realize my dreams. It moves me beyond my comfort zone.  I started writing stories at an early age, and I wondered what it would feel like to be a certain character.  To find a piece of me in a world of fiction is challenging. I want to see how far I can go with acting.

Acting, for me, has always been something I loved. It was the way when a character cried, you felt like crying, too. I was just always fascinated at seeing how much people could take another person and their personality and just ACT. When I was younger, I never knew that to be successful in your performance and to make it believable, you had to have real connection with your character. This was pretty evident through all of the interviews I watched with all of my favourite characters. It made me so interested. I was so intrigued. Ever since, I've going to training courses and doing as much drama as I can. I want to be an actor because my passion for drama is my fuel, it's what keeps me going... It's what takes me away, a little bit, from my world; my reality

  13. I want to be an actress because - it's all I've ever REALLY wanted to do. Even as child, I knew. My father forbid it and so, outside of a few summer camp plays, I never seriously pursued it.
I started working at age 14 (32 now) and since then, I've worked in over 20 professions. Some were miserable experiences and some were awesome. But not a single job satisfied my deepest desire; to act. I've tried forgetting all about it. But I can't. I can not be someone who let's their dreams go with them to the grave. I can not be truly happy and be fulfilled if I live in fear of going after what I want most in my heart. My Dad was well meaning - but, he died broke and miserable. No matter what this journey brings - the journey will be well worth it and I will go to the grave knowing I did my best to follow my dream. That is why I want to Act. For me - there just isn't another worthy option.

I love taking personal experiences and energy and putting into my character. Acting has never been about the glitz and glam I love that I can take a character and see life through there eyes I can tell stories. I can be someone else.

  15. I want to be an actress because I feel that acting gives me the chance to express my feelings that I cant express in everyday life. Acting also is a way to show a different side of me that has been hidding. Acting gives me mental strength to continue being me around anyone. My whole life ive wanted to be famous for the money but a few years ago I realized that I realy wanted to express who I am to the world. For a long time I have been bullied and downtalked but now I look past that and realize that im more that what they say, im everything I want to be. So now im 13 following my dream to be me without being me.

  19. I want to become an actor because I love stories and how the way you tell them can make people feel so many different emotions, the way you can find out a little more about yourself with each story and performance amazes me. In the words of Oscar Wilde "It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors". And being able to help someone to get to know themselves in the way that others have helped me is just something that seems very uplifting to me. I'm a writer, and to be able to feel and perform as the characters I've created would be something very fulfilling. I think that's why.

  20. Why do I want to become an actor? That is one question that gets my brain cells all charged up and makes me think. I was 12 when I saw this beautiful film and it was an amazing movie. It did not have big star names associated with it but it connected with the masses which is more important. I always wanted master the art of acting, but never got the guidance. I used to imitate the actors and try acting in front of the mirrors. The way the actors make the audience forget their sorrows, griefs, problems for short period of time is amusing. They give them hope, that one day it will all fall in place. That's what i love most about acting. Making someone smile, laugh, cry is the most difficult task. I want to become an actor to bring about change to make an impact on the society and also because i like to Act. This almost sums it all up, as to why I want to become an actress

  22. I love acting because even the cons, like late night rehearsals and missing social events, make the final performance magical. It's the rush I get when I'm able to memorize a script and than able to perform it. The rush when I get an applause from the crowd after a performance. It's being able to say " I did this, even though you said I was too shy and not confident enough.". I love being able to study a monologue or script and put my real emotions in it. Not turning into the character I'm reading about but finding that character in me. Acting is something I love whether it's on a set in front of a camera crew or on stage with a huge audience. It's my passion and I love it, it makes me gleeful :)

  23. Why I want to be an actor? Well, there are so many reasons. The first reason is to express myself and to be who I really am on the inside, and to stop hiding myself out of fesr that I am not good enough. I want to act because I feel its somethimg natural inside of me that needs soe nourishing and learning to come out. I am always mimicking peoples lines on TV or movies set, and im naturally a people Person. I feel being an actor will be very fulfilling, yet at the same time a great challenge.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I feel you. It's natural for some people. Fortunately, we are some of them! Never say your not good enough! I mimick people on tv too, and that is part of what made me want to act.

      Delete
  24. Why do I want to be an actor? Well, truth be told I don't. I want to be an inspiration. I want to be able to inspire others to do what they love through acting. I feel acting is an art form that can truly move people and stir in them so many different things like creativity, passion, emotion. Acting creates so many emotions within a person, and not just the performer but the audience as well. I feel that acting is a way to get to know oneself in a deeper way because through different roles your connecting with these other characters on a deep level and you have to be able to understand the workings of another character's mind in order to be able to portray them in a realistic way. If you can't connect with a character then the performance itself is weak and it won't be capable of touching someone and moving them the way it can. So no, I don't want to be an actor; I want to act and through it, I want to be able to inspire others.

P.S. Sorry if this is not the best writing/post. This is my first publication of my actual thoughts as they are. Not planned or crafted to sound a certain way. Just my reflection on the question asked.

  25. Why do I want to be an actor? Honestly, I've never thought about acting when I was younger. But as I heard people talk about their favorite actors as their role models/inspiration, it made me realize that I wanted to be someone's inspiration/role model. I like entertaining people and keeping them happy. When they laugh, smile, or even cry, it shows how much an actor can affect someone. When I was younger, I always thought no one loved me. My parents hardly payed attention to me, instead focusing their attention to my 16 year old brother and my 10 year old sister. They only bothered to scold me for not trying. hard enough when I got a grade lower than an A or to scold me for being with my friends to long. I never really got to go out to see my friends much as my parents wanted to me to study all the time. Then I found out that people I thought I could trust my life with only befriended me to get good grades. I was always made fun of at school and sometimes my "friends" joined the teasing. After all this, as I decoded that I want to show people who I really am. I was tired of hiding under a mask and faking my emotions. I want to put my real emotions in and express myself freely. I want to be able to work with others who have the same interests as me and learn more so I can become the best I can and become an inspiration to others.

  33. I want to be an actress because I LOVE making people excited to see me. I also love expressing myself. I get this feeling when I watch my favorite show or movie. It's amazing! I want to make others get that felling. If I do that, I feel like I accomplished something. I don't want to do this for the fame or money. Believe me, if I did, I wouldn't want to put so much passion and dedication into my acting.

  34. Why do I want to be an actress? Well, I want to be an actress because I like playing different roles, sometimes I'm a little shy, but when it comes to play a role.. trust me, I find myself. Acting is one of the best things I have. I really find and express myself, every script I make it my own story, my own problem. Maybe I am not good at so many things, but I am good at acting, and I feel so alive, so good whenever I'm playing a role and improving a new script.

I'd make the friends I had laugh by performing slapstick, copying my idol, of all people, Rowan Atkinson. Ever since,I felt like I have leaned on the few skills I had as an actor to express myself to other people. I'd like to get better..... Make more people laugh with me, and not at me.

    1. Dear James, from your description , you appear to be very perceptive and emphatic person. Even though you have had some negative experience as a child, you have taken a positive stand and have allowed it to awaken your creativity and benevolence. Which indicates you should be able to become a good actor, as a true actor portrays characters, just like a writer creates characters. George R.R. Martin, the author of A Song Of Ice And Fire once was asked where does the secret to creating a character lies. He answered : "It starts with empathy. You discover something, which you can relate to and share with the character and then work towards building more and more layers and characteristics." Same goes for acting, I feel. Starts with empathy and it is on the actor to build up and develop the character while undergoing personal transformation and growth. You seem to be on this very track, which is very encouraging and exemplary to see ! Also you appear to care to bring something good to those who have wronged you. Wishing you best of luck with your pursuit!

That's some kind of drugs to me. When i act, there so much reasons to keep doing this, i do feel like i can and i will. That's the only thing that make me happy and strong. When i act, everything around me just stop. No matter how loud is it, or how many people are there, no, it's just me with big problem right there. And when i finish i'm like new person. I wanna learn more, i wanna work it, i know some things and i can show it for the others, because to help and teach, people who wanna know more i'm an open door. That's give me happiness, no one can live without breathing, right? Well that's the same thing! I don't know how to explain in some sentences, my love can't be explained. Well, that's what i feeling. That's just my dream since i've been kid.

I can never get enough of what a monologue or a role can bring. It is amazing to see how connected you are to how your craft makes you feel. I don't know if I'm right, but did you write this post in a quick haze of emotions, all just tumbling from your fingertips? That's exactly how I felt writing my post and is also the vibe I got from reading your. God bless, you will go far!

  39. The reason why I am deciding to become an actor, is because firstly of the movies that have inspired me. I don't think the actors and directors know how much movies sometimes change people's lives. They have changed mine for the better. Changing me from someone who was shy and reserved and always not stepping out of my bounds that I subconsciously put on myself. Into one which took this step, a chance I would have never taken if it weren't for the movies I watched. And also, other than inspiring others, I want to be able to use the renown i have from my acting career to be able to help others. To help the kids/teens to really fulfil their ambitions, to let them try out and see for themselves and after that to nurture their dreams. Money and fame to me is not important because i believe that if you fulfil your dreams and see the smiles and achievements of those you helped are worth much more.

  42. I have always loved watching TV. I have loved it for ever and not just because of the writing or the set design or anything like that. It's always been because of the actors. I've always connected with them, especially on Disney Channel which is my dream network. Those kids on the shows are just so inspiring. I am a kid just like them, but they took what they love and made a career out of it. They change my life and some of them are younger then me. They all have something to say and so do I. I want to do this because I was born to follow my dreams. I want to change someone's life like my favorite actors did for me.

  44. I've always wanted to be an actress since I was very young. I always felt like there was an inner me that I couldn't quite express for fear of being judged so acting on a stage definitely helped me be able to express myself better. Acting to be was the most intriguing form and artistry that I could tap into, to tap into the darker recesses of my mind. When I began acting in HS, there was nothing like being on stage, a room full of unknown people that I couldn't see because of the light. I felt completely vulnerable and a completely rush of excitement at the same time, the best high I've ever experienced in my life. Now I feel like it is my job to help the character express their voice, mind, emotions and past in the most truthful way possible.

I used to eschew acting and assume it was only for people who did not intend to have a family or a real life. But now I'm beginning to realize that having a normal job is actually the most unrealistic thing I could do. I would love, of course, to be rich and famous. But that's not why I want to be an actor. I want to be an actor because it's fun.

  47. In short, I want to be an actress to live life through so many different people. Really, acting, drama etc., is about people. That's what makes it so interesting to watch, it's why Shakespeare is so relevant today, even hundreds of years on. Whether it's people shipwrecked in Titanic, or forbidden lovers in Romeo and Juliet, or some character in a school show, audiences still share the emotion we all have in common. As an actress, you get to deliver that to an audience, and the feeling you get when they cry, laugh, or sympathise with the character is amazing. And anyway, why by one person, when, through acting, you can be as many as you like?

I have had a very hard life, full of horrible things. If I could help people who have also had a hard life by giving them hope, confidence, or a laugh, that's great!

  52. Growing up, the ultimate question is always "who are you going to be?"
I must say, I found this need for direction utterly annoying. I wanted to be so many things. I wanted to be an architect, a pianist, a ballerina, a scientis, and a lawyer. How was I supposed to choose beween this huge spectrum of choices? A good answer would have been process of elimination. What do I suck at? and so that choice would be automatically banned from my convention. However, I did not suck at any of the options I had. I was actually pretty good at all of them.
I though I was never going to find a path. But then I realised there was a way of becomming all of them without having to choose. I could act, and I could pretend to be a ballerina and a lawyer, and even a scientist.
I know it is just pretense, but it is more than that, so much more. It is the closest I have to opportunity of trying a lot of things without having to actually choose one. If I have to choose, I choose not to choose.

But I am discovering that the better you are the more exciting it gets. I decided I wanted to act in 6th grade when I did a play with my cousins. 9th-12th grade my drama teacher noticed my potential and took me under her wing to show me the ropes. I competed all throughout high school in the Florida State Thespian Competitions and did extremely well. But when I left high school I lost my passion and the only thing that got me back up was auditioning for an acting scholarship when it was the only way I could afford school. that match lit a torch and now its forever burning, I want to act FOREVER AND EVER I pray I can make a career out of it. So I'm heading back to the basics.

I agree with you acting can be a form of expressing your feelings. When watching people act you can sometimes relate and feel what you are watching; as if it is actually you yourself. Many people watch television and if they are feeling bad watching entertainment will make them feel better or feel good. Or, get great ideas from what they've watched.

A lot of actors and actresses have inspired others and it's nice to know that, that's what you want. A lot of people want to act or sing just for the money. But in reality it's really not that easy and it shouldn't be all about the money. My dad always said to me, do what you like to do the most and something you enjoy and know you would do it for the rest of your life, because you will become more successful than others who pick jobs that pay the most.

Why do I want to be an Actress? I don't know if I am a good actress. But when I was 10 years old, I decided that, that's what I wanted to be. Simple as that, in my young mind. But I didn't tell anyone. I was afraid they would laugh at me. Or tell me I couldn't do it. And, I didn't know what to do to make that dream a realty, so that's how it stayed. Just a dream that i couldn't go a single day without thinking about.
But it is something that I really want to do, I would like to find out if I AM good at it. I love the idea that, I can be anything in the whole world. I can be a Pirate, or a Princess. A 60's Miss America, or Mid-evil scientist! Just to get a little wild ;) that, for me is absolutely exhilarating!! And, the idea of people watching me preform on the TV screen is terribly exciting too, I mean, for my family to sit in front of the TV for a movie night, and then watch me, acting on the screen! that is goal for me. I really want that to happen, and i want to give people the same feeling that i get wile watching TV. I know this is probably really cheesy, but I want to entertain, and be happy. Acting makes me happy :)

A good character, performance, story or chemistry between cast can help set up and bring out feelings in viewers. The great ones can last forever, giving those watching the same feeling 15 or 20 years later and it can help draw out those feelings and take you back to that time. I'd love to be apart of that, to help create those moments and memories.

When I'm around my family, I'm a crazy outgoing person. However when I'm around friends I tend to shy away from who I really am. There's like a barrier between the "fake" me and the real me. I think that acting will help me with it as most actors or actresses have to come out of their shell in order to play there part.

Hello my name is Brion and the reason why I want to be an actor is because it makes me happy to entertain people with my talents and I always thought instead of making a career with something that doesn't make me happy or isn't any fun I might as well make a career out of something I love like acting, singing, and dancing

  84. I have always been an entertainer and loved to play pretend. As far back as I can remember I was a mimic of everything I saw and performed poor impressions to get a laugh. I have spent time on stage as a musician, but at this point in my life, I want to pursue voice acting. I am continually learning and exposing myself to as many different theories of acting as possible.

I feel like I always had a desire to act, and I find it easy to act different types of personalities, I can make things pretty real sometimes. Also, from a young age I had an interest in arts. I also like to make people happy!

  88. I wouldn't say "I want to be an actor" for, according to William Shakespeare : "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts...".So along these lines, I would like to study acting, in order to be able to increase my awareness of the player I already am. We all play/act but we do so, to the invisible guidance of destiny. By becoming an actor, we may be allowed to peep into the complexities of life, without necessarily being involved or affected by them. We can discover many layers, wear many skins, go many places and do incredible things. And the magic is in finding all of this, within the vastness and confinement of the stage.

    1. I feel this deeply. I once heard it is impossible for one to fully "live" in one lifetime. Acting allows for us to live ... through stories. Fiction or non fiction. Through imagination. On the stage . On the stage of life

I never knew what I wanted to do when I grow up, I used to say "Doctor" the next week "Lawyer" a month down the road "In a band" and then I thought I want to be an actress where I can experience a doctors life at one job and a lawyers life at a different job! I find it fascinating to be able to put myself in other peoples shoes. :)

  92. I want to be an actor because I have suppressed my artistry and emotions for a while now. I am a singer and songwriter and its become ever so difficult for me to tap into emotions and convey the messages or the stories and lessons i've learned along the way. The ability to share my gift of understanding people and emotions gives me a deep desire to act it out. Acting is my therapy and honestly it may save my art

  101. I have been putting off this acting class for a while now and finally got the courage to do it. Part of my dream of being an actress is to inspire people through film. I want to be a part of making a movie/story that transform people's lives everywhere and has a great impact on their lives. I want to show people that all that they go through others have gone through it and that they are not alone in their fight.

and also film and theatre in my country is not very big. we dont really have a good acting school and there's not much known about acting in my country. so another part of my dream is to bring theatre and drama here.

  104. I want to be an actor because acting is me and I am acting! Since a tender age I have been entertaining people from visitors at home to parents and visitors meetings at home. I love entertaining people and seeing them smile through entertainment makes me feel happy deep with in. I always like expressing things through my entertainment because it enables me to relate much better with people and I get to appreciate life more. So for me being an actor allows me to express a lot, spread joy and happiness, I also get to learn a lot in life. Entertainment is the mirror in my life.

  107. I want to be an actress because I've always loved acting, I love being able to put myself in anothers shoes, being someone I'm not, living a different life for a bit. I will admit I want to be famous and rich for it one day, but I know that will take a lot of time, effort, skill, training, experience, etc. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make a living off of acting! Someone told me "if you do what you love you will never work a single day in your life!" I would love to do that!

  111. I'm wanting to explore acting because I like the thought of telling a story. I think it would be amazing to be a part of a world that was created (a film) that is outside of the every day world we live in today. I have a strong passion for learning new things, especially if it is something I enjoy, such as watching films and/or shows.
