Part 7 Free Acting School - Freedrama Online Classes for Actors - 2016 Edition - characters

Free Acting School from D. M. Larson - Part 7 of the Freedrama.net Free Acting School

Now it is time to prepare yourself to act. After you selected two monologues to perform on camera from this link http://www.freedrama.net/small1a.net then answer the following questions in the blog comments below.

Which character in the monologues is most like you?

What character is most like you Free Acting School Part 4

When you pick a character, ask yourself the following:

What do you like about the character?

What is similar between you and that character?

Do you know someone else who is like the character?

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

I once heard an actor say they always decide what that character might have for breakfast and that helps them figure the character out.

There are no wrong answers. The important thing is to learn as much as possible about the character before performing the character.

Post in the comments below your answers to the questions above.

You must then respond to another actor in the blog discussion below.  Your interactions MUST be positive :) ***

ACTING TIP FROM STELLA ADLER: "The actor has to develop his body. The actor has to work on his voice. But the most important thing the actor has to work on is his mind."
Post your replies to the above questions in the comments below.

    1. What do you like about your character? Personally, I don't think Harmony is a great person, I probably wouldn't really be friends with her in real life because she seems very aggressive and violent. However, she is honest and I think she is the type of character that wants to be nicer but just doesn't know how, I think she probably grew up in a rough, broken home and didn't get a lot of love so she is taking it out on other people around her.
What are some similarities between you and your character? I don't see many similarities between us because she is so angry and dark and I'm a geniuenly happy person with a light personality, so we seem like polar opposites!
Do you know someone else like your character? No, I have never met anyone quite like Harmony.
Do you have a personal experience that connects you with your character? No, I have no experience that could connect me with my character. The only way I could build this character was to create an idea of what I believe she would be like and go from there!
BACK STORY: What made Harmony the way she is? Harmony was born into a family that had a lot of issues. As a child she never received the attention and love that she needed, so she became angry because that was all that she knew. I see her as being not only an angry, scary girl but also sarcastic because she turns to that to make herself feel more comfortable. I don't think she wants to be a mean person but she doesn't quite know how to change and doesn't really feel like putting in the effort so she is just going to stay the way she is. She loves to wear black clothes, listen to My Chemical Romance, and spend all of her time either in her room or taking really long showers- because she doesn't have many friends ( a cliché "punk chink"). She is 17 years old and hates the color yellow, amusement parks, and ice cream.

    2. What I like about this character is it’s emotional. It’s defiantly a cry for help. I like the outspokenness of the character Jamie Moira, who’s in the Monologue, “The Not So Perfect Child.”. In similarity between me and the character, I would express my hurt like Jamie if no you listen to me like it needed them to. Yes, for instance, I had family members go through an identity crisis with their siblings. It’s the first born or older siblings that in contention with younger siblings. My personal experience that helps me understand this character is going that saying that everyone is not perfect, Jamie needs to know that. Jamie is in a lot emotional anger that no one is paying attention to her like she wants. She felt that way because of grudges, holding in. She figures that she is not perfect and it brothers her identity when she does something that deserves recognition. Jamie may have kept to herself a lot until it outburst emotional anger that makes look or seem bad, I really dislike that. I think she should grudges with her sister. Tanika Garner aka Zoe T. Garner

I have many friends like that.
Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Yes, well kinda. I have had my times when I was rejected by someone I liked and I just played it off in a "Thank Goodness you said no " kinda way.

When you pick a character, ask yourself the following:

What do you like about the character?
~ i like how in the end she didnt tell Apollo what was going to happen to him because he didnt tell her there was a fine print.

What is similar between you and that character?
~ I do that to my friends all the time they make something sound so good but forget to menchen the down side of it, i get mad and not talk to them so in the end were alike because we are childish.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
      My sister R.J.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
      Yes.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

Cassandra is from Greece she likes to be told the full details abould something she dislike it when people talk about her behind her back and not face to face. Shes is 15.

  2. What do you like about the character?
I like how outspoken the character is

What is similar between you and that character?
I too reminisce on school as a "warm fuzzy" time, where teachers supported and nurtured growth in the classroom. I also relate to the character that is cynical when it comes to competing against one another in the workplace - I think it's juvenile.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
Yes I have a friend who is a school teacher and I can see the similarities.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
I have had some fellow employees been jealous of my work and wanted to take my ideas, I can also sense how these days people are more oriented towards protecting themselves rather than working together as a team.

This character is a 31 year old female. She enjoys wearing fashionable outfits, however likes to wear bright cheery colours, as she did back home. She lives at home with her cat in her apartment in a quiet, upscale neighborhood of the upper east side of Manhattan. She is a secondary school teacher, who has been teaching at a Private school in New York. She teaches English and the humanities. She has a masters degree in literature. She, like others, has focused on her career. However, she misses her family back home in California. She misses her family bbq's on the beach every Sunday, she misses her childhood friends, and the sense of community. She chased her dreams and moved to New York, only to be disappointed at the attitude of the teachers around her. Once a fun-loving, easy-going woman, has now become cynical and exhausted.

  3. What do you like about the character?
I like Jude as he is tragically flawed reminded of an old Greek tale while the captain seems like he is the stock and essential space captain.

What is similar between you and that character?
Like Jude I have experienced my lows in life and like the captain we have both failed at jobs

Do you know someone else who is like the character?

I do not know anyone like the captain and Jude I have friends ad family who battle with severe depression and suicidal actions

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
No not really for any of them

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

The captain is Jack Redding, an elite member of the GCC. He was born on earth but raised in a colony in space and enlisted in the GCC shortly after high school, he is 32 years of age. He dresses in the GCC standard AB7 armor, he is a fan of classic westerns and noir films.

Jude is a down and out man who wishes to end it all. He is late twenties working a dead end job barley making ends meet. He was raised by his mother who died while he was in high school leaving him all alone. He left school early to get a job to support himself but his job does not pay enough and has left him beyond struggling. Then one night he meets Grace an angel who promises to make it better but all the time spent seems to have no affect.

  4. I think that the character Cassandra is more like me. I like her because she is funny, energetic, and he seems so innocent. The second I watched Emily act as her, I knew that's who I wanted as my monologue. Something that is similar between me and my character is that we both have been tricked by someone we thought was going to help us. Then you get mad for a second and then try to play it cool. I don't know anyone like this character. I have, like I said, been tricked by someone and tried to gt them back with words just like Cassandra did so I think that would put me at some experience. The back story of Cassandra was that she was living a happy life (she wore robes) in Troy until she got envious of her older sister, Jennifer, so she prayed and prayed to Apollo asking for something that she could use to be better then her sister until one day when she was walking around, she was mysteriously invisible. She saw the god Apollo coming up to her and making her a deal. He said that he would give her the power to see into the future under a few conditions. She grabbed the scroll of conditions and said deal without giving the list a second glance. Then she later noticed that she had forgotten that she was invisible. That was the fine-print of the conditions. She was only 17 and invisible! And finally for breakfast she would have a glass of milk and a bowl of fruit.

  6. Which character in the monologues is most like you?
I would say I can relate to both characters Tyranny and Janey. Janey feels alone, frightened and in a deep depression after her parents death, which I myself have dealt with loss this way. But I would also say that I have similarities with Tyranny. I too am a mother, and once you become a parent your mindset changes, you reminisce and relive your past. Thinking what you could have done differently.

What do you like about the character?
I love how honest Tyranny is about herself. Being able to express your own thoughts and feelings so openly, and without hesitation is a beautiful thing.
Janey is in such a vulnerable state. She is depressed, angry, afraid of everyone around her. But there is still an inner strength that breaks through.

What is similar between you and that character?
Tyranny and I are both mothers, who pretty much raise our daughters on our own. We have both been hurt and used, which has left us scarred. And makes us stronger. We will do anything to protect our girl from anything or anyone.
Janey and I are both very emotional people. Our hearts get the best of us. And sometimes we don't know how to handle the emotions going through us. But we go on each day, and get stronger.
Do you know someone else who is like the character?
I can't think of anyone that comes to mind.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
Tyranny is 18 years old. She grew up in Idaho, and feels like she will forever be stuck in Idaho. There was a time where she envisioned getting out of this small town and doing big things with herself, but life intervened. She grew up in the church, being told what was right and wrong, staying abstinent, but puberty threw all that out the window. Boys were hot, especially those brunettes with blue eyes, and she wanted to pursue them. She didn't have a big relationship with her parents, although she talked to her mother from time to time. She got into partying and heavy drinking. Started wearing slimming short skirts, and low revealing tops. She started seeing guys but nothing serious, until she met Buck at a party where she was so wasted she doesn't even remember having sex with him. In which she got pregnant. She debated on abortion, but apart of her still believed that that was an abomination. And it was a live little thing growing inside of her. So she kept it. She and Buck got married, she wanted to try and be a good wife, but Buck left before she got the chance. It broke her. Having to go through pregnancy and caring for a child all alone terrified her. At least she had her mother to help her. She felt pathetic, unwanted. But she grew up, for her child. Became the mother that little girl needed. Works 2 jobs to make ends meet and provide for her. Her daughter, Ennui deserves more than this life. And she will do all she can to make that happen, and protect her from any dangers along the way.

Janey grew up in the perfect home. Loving and supporting parents. They were close and told each other everything. They would always have a family fun night on Saturdays and Janey got to choose whatever they were to do. When she got into her teens, something changed inside her. She started feeling so sad, and nothing would get her out of it. She started to cut herself. She was put on meds, and into therapy. She felt so uncomfortable talking to strangers about her feelings. Especially this guy. He just didn't understand. Let alone seemed to care, he didn't listen to her half the time. The only constant in her life was her mother and father. After high school she went to college, kept to herself. She was a loner. People made her nervous. She felt claustrophobic in crowds. You never know what they might do, or say. Kept her life in books. She loves to read. Dresses in unflattering clothes, she is very self concious of her body. She graduated with a degree in literature and got a job at a publishing company as a PA. Living life in the motions, keeping in touch with her parents. Her parents died in a car accident, which left her feeling empty. The world around her shattered. She had no one left. She locked herself up in her apartment, stopped going to work, stopped eating. Was put into the hospital. And yet another doctor, who could probably care less and not listen. She just wanted to be alone, she was better alone. No one could hurt her. She'd been contemplating suicide, maybe it will be better, and then she'd be able to be with her parents again.

What do you like about the character?
I like how he lets his mind free and think about anything that he wants, for no reason at all.

What is similar between you and that character?
Mostly the fact that we both like to say random stuff that comes to our minds and share it with others. Also that I am a really dreamy person who wonders about everything.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
    Yes, my little sister.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Mostly when my best friend points out how dreamy i am and how "I normally say random stuff that comes to my mind" that has no point on being thought about.

  11. What do you like about the character?
Ebony-because she has a very strong personality and it gives me curiosity how she will react to a very bad news.
Nel-because she is simple, ordinary and yet if you observe her she is different and interesting.

What is similar between you and that character?
Ebony- being a fighter to achieve a goal. She must've stumbled a couple of times to be able to be where she is right now and having to stand up after rejections and challenges can be a common thing for us.
    Nel- we are both dreamers.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
I have a grandfather who became rich in his mid years but he always say they started out poor and I think he has the same persona as Ebony, of always fronting a strong and successful image.
Nel can be similar to my mom who married at a young age and ended up with fights and eventually getting separated.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
    1. I grew up poor and I guess that's why I work hard as much as I could because the same as Ebony, there's a part of me that doesn't want to reach that low again.
    2. Nel is easy to relate to because all relationships seem always magical at first and it comes to a point you will argue and discover differences.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
    1. Ebony grew up in a poor neighborhood. She had a few clothes and a pair of shoes that she has to take really good care of because they don't have enough money to buy another pair. She hated being hungry, she hated being poor and so she promised herself she will struggle out from it. And she did because she was smart and talented. She has a very good voice and she even trained harder. She was able to impress a very good vocal teacher who later on managed her career.
She is in her mid 30's now. Her struggles made her a perfectionist when it comes to her craft and she is very hard on herself, and even with people around her. She became a person not very easy to please. Food has taste and look like it came from a high-class restaurant. Her clothes and shoes are all custom-made. She has a whole room filled with just clothes, shoes, bags and jewelries.

    2. Nel grew up in the country where her parents live very simple lives. Her mom and dad are both teachers and they where highschool sweethearts. They were each others' first love and are now married for a very long time. That is also the same relationship that Nel dreams. Simple, happy and magical--like they are really two persons meant for each other. When she moved to the city for work, she met Mel. A very handsome gentleman and she was immediately attracted to him. They met at Nel's favorite coffee shop and Mel, nervous and feeling the butterflies in his stomach, shyly walked in and introduced himself because he simply can't let the moment pass. That was his exact words. She couldn't help laughing. The next day, he took her to an ice cream shop. They had been together for two years now and the first year was just as Nel imagined--magical. Until they moved in together.

  12. The character who is most like me is Jenny.

She is adorable, fun and seems to be mature but young at the same time. We're both nerds and in search for romance. We also think that handsome guys are out of our league so it's better if we hang out with nerd guys.

Jenny also resembles my best friend from elementary. I live and breathe anime, comics and cosplay conventions, enough said.

    Let's see...
Jenny comes from a city, seeing that has technology and can't live without it. She's still in school of course. Jenny must be around my age whre girls usually search for romance and falls in love. Since Jenny is a nerd, I would say she would wear pants and shirt of her favourite games or comics. Yep. First of all, she hates frilly dresses. She doesn't like to be friends with people who are "fake". She is true to her words and doesn't take things for granted. She is very determined in her ways and is very wise what she says since she's a considerate person. Sometimes she says the wrong things without realizing it and ends up feeling guilty when she thinks back on her words. She seriously loves staying at home in her bed, playing games, reading comics and watching anime. She is fairly good in school. Have good friends and hang out with her nerdy guy friends from time to time. Sometimes she does feel sad and lonely but she can be happy easily. That's what she is.

Yes, There is someone I love and I'd give up immortality to live a happy and normal life with them like the angel. The character has probably only known love. She is very attached to mortal life even though she isn't one. I think the character dresses in all white with her wings, she has long brown hair. She comes from heaven and she loves thing man, she loves to be mortal and she hates Satan and anything that can get in her way. She would be in her teenage years.

What do you like about the character?
Jamie is depressed, so I don't know... But he seems like he is stay strong, and I like it

What is similar between you and that character?
Sometimes I can feel a little depressed too, because I'm insecure about myself sometimes

Not really like the character, just a little bit

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Sometimes I put myself under pressure, and sometimes kids were mean to me, so that make me feel a little like Jamie

What made them the way they are?
Jamie is probably insecure because he puts himself under pressure, and he probably lost someone he loved

    Where did they come from?
    New Jersey

What do they like and dislike?
Jamie likes to see shows (like Teen Wolf :) ), listening to music and play drums, and he dislikes being ignored

    How old are they?
    16

    What do they dress like?
His clothes are simple but cute. He wears a grey sweater, black and tight jeans with a hole in each knee, and brown boats. His hair his like Dylan O'Brien hair :)

  16. Of my two monologues, I feel that Beth is the most like me. She is down-to-Earth who doesn’t make a big deal about big named celebrities. Like myself, Beth isn’t afraid to dream. She dreams, and wishes, for hope and peace. At one point in the monologue, she talks about wanting a world where no one is more important than the next person. Can you imagine a world like that? I could rant for days on that topic! One person in my life who is also like Beth would be a really close friend of mine, April. April is a lot like Beth, where she is down-to-Earth and is constantly thinking of other people. When I worked for April, she never put herself on a pedestal just because she was the manager. Everyone had an equal voice in how things were run and our opinions mattered. For Beth, I see her as being in her late 20s, coming from a close-knit family, growing up in a rural setting, where she can always see the stars. She was taught to always help others, because there are others out there who are less fortunate. Her family didn’t have a lot of money when she was growing up, which is why she talks about money not mattering and being a thing of the past. She dresses in a simple and comfortable fashion, jeans and a nice shirt with a pair of cowboy boots, and her hair in a ponytail.

  17. 1) Slug from "QUITTING"
From the published play "MUSIC MAYBE"
    2) Mezmero from "KILL FIRST, GLOAT LATER"
From the published play "Between Good and Evil"

What do you like about the character?
    1) He's relatable and vulnerable, these are good traits to look for when you are picking a role because it gives you more opportunity to become him and also spread my acting wings a bit.
    2) He's so outrageously defiant and cold, yet at the same time is extremely attached to other people and asking for acceptance and love.

What is similar between you and that character?
    1) I relate to him in that I have lost a lot of people in my life through different means and try to hold tight onto the ones I care about even if I'm the one having to put forth a lot of effort.
    2) I happen to be a supervillain (kidding). I relate to my character because when I'm good at something, I used to have a tendency to not put much effort of love into things because I would come out fine anyway due to relatively natural intelligence and genetics that supported me along with a loving family. I didn't take pride in many things I did and I grew slightly detached throughout teen years to most people and hobbies. Acting is that one thing that makes me want to try with everything I have because I love it to it's core, acting is to me what Super Dead Man was to him.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
    1) I am very much like the character but I do know a lot of people, it's a very common type of situation sadly and a lot of people hid in their insecurities about it so well that you wouldn't even know how common it is. I have multiple friends who are like this, along with a few exes.
    2) I have a somewhat casual friendship with someone who is sick and who takes to social media in a way that kind of asks for attention much like he does. I also used to have a friend who was borderline sociopathic even though he was generally a well put together guy.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
    1) I have lost people due to death, falling apart naturally through times, fights, etc etc who I wasn't ready or willing to give up. My mom is important to me as well, which makes me appreciate how hard it would be to be in a situation similar to he was with his parents.
    2) I have had relationships (not specifying romance) with different people that ended in negative ways that I regret.

I've already made a fairly large backstory to my characters in the last page so I'll stick to likes..
    1) Pets because although their lives are shorter, they love with a love that stays. He really has a love for music because it's given him something to do with his time to help him cope with his pain and loneliness. He also is a huge fan of nachos.
    2) He listens to both classical and metal music. Mezmero has a very strong bond albeit not willing to admit it, to Super Dead Man. He likes when people pester him even though he acts cold in response to them outwardly. His parents were the most important to him however, he wanted the acceptance of his father and he wanted the love of his mother.

  18. Which character in the monologues is most like you?
I am most like Jamie in the "Strong Enough for Both of Us" monologue.

What do you like about the character?
What I like about the character is that she is very open and honest about the true feelings of depression.

What is similar between you and that character?
Me and this character both fell the same way. It is so hard to talk to people who can't relate to those with depression.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
I feel that anyone who is battling depression can relate to this character.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
I personally live life with a lot of depression and anxiety. It's never easy, especially when you are an empath. You feel the need to lift others up without knowing how to lift yourself up. I have lost a lot of friends who didn't understand or see my depression for what it is. And that causes a lot of hurt. It makes you feel like you are a problem or burden to them.

Backstory: She's 24 years old. Growing up for her was so hard. People around her made her feel like she was worthless until she started believing that she was. As if the younger grades of school weren't bad enough with all of its bullying, it then came time for high school. She watches as everyone else she knows fall into groups where they belong. She can't seem to find a group and begins to feel like she doesn't belong anywhere. Then her family moves her from a country town, to a big city. At this point, she is already so damaged. But still, she begins trying to put the pieces of herself back together at least a little bit. She knows that she can never fully repair the damage. She goes on with life and eventually, she finds a few people who she feels she can open up to. But as time goes by, they see just how damaged she is and end up doing the worst thing to her that you can ever do to a person so damaged. They leave. Usually, their leaving ends by them telling her she's damaged and they can't handle that. What they don't know is that it creates even more damage. More time goes by, and instead of opening up, she instead bottles it all up, thinking that no one could possibly understand how she feels. And it's only a matter of time before she snaps.

    2. Wow, this is intense. I'm sorry for anyone who is going through any type of depression, I understand. I really like how you can relate to your own monologue, that will probably make it a lot easier to preform if you are so much like your character. Good luck! :)

  19. This one is a hard one because I can relate to both of the Characters but I guess I would go with Cassandra

What do you like about the character?
I like that she is sassy and that she says what is on her mind.

What is similar between you and that character?
from time to time I can be sassy to and when there is something which I don't like I will tell that people. I think taht we both like open communication.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
I guess everyone can be such a character from time to time you just need to be more confident.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Yes I have a lot experience in getting decieved from people you trusted.

Cassandra is a mortal which was given the power to see the future. It is a great gift because you can prevent bad things to happen. Cassandra is a girl in her 20's. She is pretty and very confident.
After Apollon gave her the Power of seeing the future he starts to "hit" on her but she isn't interested in it. But Gods doesn't take things for granted and they can get upset preety much. Apollon doesn't absorb this rejection well and is mad at Cassandra. You know Gods can be very resentfully and so was Apollon. In his comtract with Cassandra it stands that if he gets rejected from her the deal will be void. But instead of losing her powers Cassandra gets cured by Apollon, that nobody will believe her and her children about stuff which happens in the future.

  20. •Which character in the monologues is most like you?
•Out of my two monologues "Beauty and Perfection" and "Go Home" I'm going to pick "Beauty and Perfection", and the character "Shelly" from that monologue.
I found a couple of things that i felt I could relate to.

•What do you like about the character?
•I like that I can relate to her in some ways, and reading through the play i felt for her the most. I like how confident she is or appears to be and that she dreams big has some motivation and purpose.

•What is similar between you and that character?
•We both dream big and are pretty confident we will achieve the dream one day, The way she comes across as confident to everybody but is really sensitive n the inside, I'm also really super sensitive but I try not to let it show to people, while I've been having a bit of a makeup free period for a few months I've now gone back to it a little bit, and I remember I used to use makeup and clothes that I thought would make me look great. I know nobody is perfect but I keep falling into these times when I just want to be for various reasons, my boyfriend, family, to get a good job i want, which hopefully will be acting and I just try everything to be perfect like she does.

•Do you know someone else who is like the character?
•not personally but I guess a lot of people are like this or have at least experienced once in the past.

•Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character? •maybe not so much recently more n my school and college days I remain mostly in the house now, but from then I have felt rejected, used and laughed at. I used to self harm, I don't know if she did it regularly or just when she attempted suicide but I have shared the same kind of feelings and emotions that go through your head, I am fine now but I can understand the pain inside she must have felt , like I said I also used to use cloths and makeup as a sort of way to make myself try and be perfect even when I had to do things I knew it was not suited for like it would ruin my clothes or mess up my hair I did it anyway because I thought if i didn't look like that then people would not like me or something, I think it says also that it is a home for troubled girls, I've never had to be rehabilitated but I have had to have various counseling over the years, so I just find it easy to imagine this character and understand her just because of these few experiences I have that is similar.

    ReplyDelete
  21. (continued)
•Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
•When she talks about not wanting to come out knowing what the first few years of her life were like makes me see that they must have been some hard years. I just sort of imagined something like her parents were always arguing I know having a baby is a stressful time for parents and wonderful time not all couples argue I just sort of thought of this because of it being the first few years of her life, I felt like they ended up breaking up at some point which can be quite stressful and traumatizing for a child which could possibly lead to troubles later in life feeling like they are a problem feeling rejected, I think that is what helped her get put here. I had imagined her being in her teens around 14 but then at th end it says about that guy getting married i assume to her it was the guy that she liked so I guess that would make her a bit older 16-18 while 16 is a bit young to get married it is legal with parent or guardians permission and since she was having a baby is a reason why she might have, the way she speaks didn't feel like it was mature enough to be 18 or older that's why I thought 14 she sort of spoke like a young teenager. Whenever I thought of her apart from the hospital, I had imagined her to be Thin, Blonde her hair is straight with a fringe cut in, and sunglasses white with a tint of pink in the lenses, Shortish but then as I said I imagined she was quite young, obviously with a great sense of fashion, whenever i pictured her I thought about her in a pink tank top, white 3/4 length trousers, I imagined she had a white jacket but didn't wear it much I didn't think about her in it much, I thought she was wearing white flips fops with pink of the part around the toes but then thinking they are on a farm she probably didn't she probably wore some kind of boots short though not up the leg her trousers could have been 3/4 as I thought or full length, maybe white is not the right colour for a farm but then as she didn't dress for her work or anything and dressed mostly for fashion I think it's possible.

So i felt like the breakup of her parents led her to feeling rejected and wanting to prove herself wanting to prove she is perfect and that she can follow her dreams and then how she gets rejected by her boyfriend and they laugh at her it feels like she does not really fit in and she just wants to be liked by everybody and uses her beauty fr that. she wants to appear perfect and confidant but she is very sensitive on the inside and when she tried to kill herself after being dumped and laughed at she probably thought she never would be good enough and it wasn't worth trying but then getting a confidence boost whilst meeting the boy in the hospital, How she liked him so soon after the breakup tells me she just wants to feel loved by somebody.

She clearly doesn't like getting herself dirty her looks are a very big deal to her, like me though I think she just did it anyway knowing she would be doing her jobs because she thought she had t always look perfect or maybe she would get rejected or laughed at by people again.

  23. I chose Cassandra because I like her sassy attitude, her confidence, and how she can see into the future and not be heard. Well I am pretty quiet because no one really listens to me so I feel like I can relate to her. I know someone who is really sassy and says what's on her mind. I think I have some experiences that make me understand her more. I think the character is the way she is because Apollo cursed her and she isn't happy and wants to know what is going on. She was cursed due to her breaking a deal for a gift of prophecy. Now her punishment is to be cursed with people not believing in her. She is one of the stories you usually read in a Greek mythology book.

  26. The two monologues I picked were "The Not So Perfect Child" and "Catchick". Out of those two monologues I am more like Jamie (from "The Not So Perfect Child".

Q: What do you like about the character?
A: I like how Jamie is honest about how she is feeling.

Q: What is similar between you and that character?
A: Me and Jamie both have gone through a very rough time in life.

Q: Do you know someone else who is like the character?
    A: Yes, a friend

Q: Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
    A: Yes.

Q: Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
A: Jamie is the ways she is because she is hurt and alone. Everyone tells her to be more like her sister, nobody thinks shes good enough. Jamie is the younger sister, which makes things worst. Jamie has been hearing all her life, "Don't do this, don't do that. You have to do it like this, ugh, can't you be more like you sister?" Jamie hates everyone, including her sister. Her sister loves Jamie a lot, and does not know that everyone is telling Jamie to be more like her sister . Jamie won't talk to her sister, so her sister does not know why Jamie is always so mad, sad, and quiet. Also, I wanted to mention that both of the girls have been home-schooled all their life, they both really enjoy it. Jamie was born in Miami Florida and her older sister was born in New York City. Jamie likes to draw and read. Jamie does not like to watch TV, or procrastinate. Jamie is 14 years old and she always wears a T-shirt and sweat pants.

  28. BACKSTORY ("End the Hurting")

The character's name is Marie and she is ten years old. She lived in a big city with three siblings: two older brothers and a younger sister. Also her parents, who were on the edge of separating. Her family was dysfunctional.

Marie wore old clothes with rips and couldn't afford new ones. She got her clothes at Goodwill. She had long curly brown hair that was put back in a bun at times. She liked pizza, fresh vegetables, and watching the sun rise and set. She liked swimming and she liked blogging.

She did NOT like kids picking on her. She also disliked her parents fighting and treating her like she was no good. She hated not having her own money to buy good clothes. She also disliked not having any friends.

Her dream was to be an actor, a model, a singer and a dancer.

She went to school with a learning disability. Everyone told her that she was NOT going to succeed in achieving her dreams. She was always alone at school; she was really very shy and did not talk much to others. She stuffed all of her anger and hatred deep inside and wouldn't tell anyone how she truly felt.

One day she realizes that she wouldn't be treated like this ANY MORE. She demanded to be treated as an equal. She knew what her dreams were and that she was good at them. She didn't let anyone tell her any differently. She stood strong and fought for her equality.

She gained friends and was successful in all that she attempted. Her family finally accepted her talents and her achievements. She had WON!! And now SHE could help OTHERS!

  29. What do you like about the character?
I can portray a different side to this big bad wolf, I can see the other side to the story that gave him his name.

The little girl isn't afraid to be different and her imagination is wild, she kind of reminds me of myself

What is similar between you and that character?
The little girl is creative and loves dreaming, she seems care free and doesn't mind being different.
Do you know someone else who is like the character? I have a friend I can relate to the big bad wolf. She's tough and never shows her sensitive side to other people. But she tells me everything, she's insecure like the wolf, judged by stories that only have one side.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Yes, I watched my friend go through tough times because of a huge lie which I can think back to when I become the wolf.

  30. Which character in the monologues is most like you?
The character most like me is Lila from The play :Between Good and Evil?
What do you like about the character?
I like the fact that she stands up for her love.
What is similar between you and that character?
Lila is similar to me beacuse we both love hard. I will do everything to keep a strong foundation for my family and food in their stomachs.
Do you know someone else who is like the character?
My sister is the same as this character. She might be just 22 but she love her family more than the world itself just like myself.
Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
My biological parents abandoned me as a kid. Thankfully, I have a grandmother, who stepped up and adopted me as her own daughter. As I grew up they came back into my life and I realized that there is more to life than making money, buying expensive cars, and wearing designer clothes. When I had my daughter at 18, she forced me to gow up quicker than all of my peers without a child. Fast forward to now, that I am 23, I am living the American dream. I feel as if nothing can get in the way of me providing for my family doing what I love to do the most which is Acting in Films and on stage. This character is based on the raw emotions I feel, when faced with obstacles in my life.
Think about why the character is the way he/she is.
Lila is this way because Peter is the only person in the word that she trusts.
What made them the way they are?
Lila's family were killed in an airplane crash, when she was a young girl. She grew up in the Foster care system in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. That is where she met Peter for the first time.
Make up a "back story" or history of the character.
Lila's parents were killed in airplane crash when she was 5. She learned early on that she was all alone in a world where there was strength in numbers. When she turned 13, She moved to a new foster care home in Wisconsin, where she met her first love Peter. They immediately formed a alliagiance to eache other. As, they grew their love for each other grew as well. That is until Peter joined the United States army as an IT specialist. He made the programs that interpret foreign wave frequencies in order for people to hear. Now, Her relationship is being tested when a beautiful alien princess come to Earth.
    Where did they come from?
She grew up in a small town in Wisonsin called Beloit.
What do they like and dislike?
She likes dogs flowers, kids, and the island of Hawai. She dislikes gossipy people, alien princesses and mice.
    How old are they?
Lila is 23 and Peter is 25.
    What do they dress like?
Lila is a very plain dressed girl. She sews her own garments. She loves to highlight her eyes with bold colors though. Peter is a nerd with excellent style. He dress in designer label everything. they have a very opposite way of dress.

  31. I chose both my monologues because I felt I could relate to the characters - but I most relate to Layla because she's looking for the light in the situation whereas Sam is only seeing the bad (plus I also kinda have a huge stuffed animal collection :/)

I also really relate to Sam in the way that I feel she adopts a sort of fun loving attitude to hide her feelings.

I've had personal experience with bullying which I feel helps me partly relate to both of these characters

I think that Sam would wear hoodies and sort of more tom-boy clothes as opposed to girly pink clothes that Layla would wear.

One method I really like is choosing songs or creating a playlist for characters so I chose "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" by The Smiths for Sam and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for Layla.

  32. I am going to say the character from Back to Work is most like me.
He is straight to the point and I like that.
He is similar as no matter how serious he is nobody thinks of him as a threat.
I can imagine alot of people who would fit the role.
Being in High School, I am usuallly incharge of most groups I'm in. However, as I am regarded as a "p*ssy" nobody takes me seriously.
Back to Work man has no obvious backstory. However I imagine his character as a slightly balding, minutely overweight, middleaged man who spent years of his life trying to get a promotion
but when he recieved it didn't know what he was doing with the power that came with it.
They would be around 34-44 years old. They'd have a black suit with a grey striped tie.
If they had a cereal? They wouldn't. He'd just buy 2 granola bars on the way to work.

However, don't think that people regard you as a (cat), just know that often people who have good manners and take the high road and have a good direction in life are often torn down by their peers. Something about human nature is that if you're doing the right thing or doing well, there will always be haters out there. So, keep that in mind. Sometimes you can tell how loved you are by the number of haters you have. I'm sure you're a good kid, and you'll do great in life.

  33. I think the captain from "Alien Goo" is most like me.

What do you like about the character?
I like how he seems to be a level-headed, charismatic leader who is cerebral in his attempts to gain the extraterrestrial cooperation.

What is similar between you and that character?
If I were trying to get an alien to sign an agreement, I'd be cordial toward them like the captain and give them the benefit of the doubt that they are sensible people.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
I knew a chief in the navy who seemed to be a very fair leader.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
I was sometimes involved in diplomatic relations with other organizations, and the captain's interacts reminded me of some of those times in my life.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
The captain probably earned his way up slowly and steadily and has become very mature from hard life lessons. He's learned how people work and how to gain their cooperation. He was likely an enlisted man that earned the respect of his peers and gained a thorough understanding of the lower ranks prior to going through officer training. Now, he has learned that the me more he learns, the less he realizes he actually knows in the whole scheme of reality, and he carries no ego. He knows that every member of his crew is just as important as the captain himself, likewise he does not underestimate the aliens. The captain could either be a very experienced 20-something or even a very seasoned expert in his 50's or so.

    1. As I read over the script for "Alien Goo", my thoughts differ on the role of the captain. basically everything I've written above is sort of true, but now I'm thinking the captain is very soft and goofy and cannot be taken seriously. So, most of what is written up there is still true after reading over the script a few times, but anything that seems to contradict my new opinion on the captain is not. I think, by the time I get ready to record the monologue, I'll be portraying the captain as very hospitable and cordial, but very silly.

  34. Luke, the character in Bug Eyed Creature is the one who mostly resembles me and my demeanor.

I really like that hes not afraid to be himself and he's such a cool character. Also that hes really forward!

Similarities Luke and I share are that were both geeks and genuine people. Also our imaginations sometimes run wild.

My high school bud was like this. However this was an internal thing we shared. We spoke a language for nerds known as leetspeak, a language kind of like pig latin.

I have a similar experience in that I as a kid changed school mid term three times.

Luke probably grew up with nerdy friends and had a lingo revolving around that. I imagine he had good friends throughout his childhood. He mustve been well established and probably never changed schools before, or her know how to handle this new situation. I think Luke has interests such as trading card games and video games. Hes 14-16 years old, and this story was probably set in the 80's when star wars and star trek were new.
He wears nerdy apparrel such as t shirts with star trek motives on.

All over I dont think any of the other characters come close in being like me.

    Yeap!

What do you like about that character?

    1. I read your post, and enjoyed the emotions you sent along with your character, it makes me feel like your monologue is gonna be a success if you stick with how you felt about your character.

  36. Q1-1: The Character starts is actually a good person being possessed by demons.
Q1-2: This Character is part of the afterlife trying to right his wrongs unconsciously.

Q2-1: We didnt know the power love can hold on us.
Q2-2: I feel like messages are being sent to me as much as this guys character.

Q3-1: Demonic characters are all around us in our life, its how much control one can have over them, and I know a few that have that kind of control and a lot that don't.
Q3-2: Living recklessly and in the fast lane is a way of life to those that I have known that have passed away and those I didn't know personally but the message was still clear to me.

Q4-1: Like I said before demons are all over and the power of love can stop them, I know because Ive had love change me before.
Q4-2: I have been in a wreck that way my fault before and felt guilty, but their wasn't much I could do to right my wrong, except let the insurance handle it and pay for it in court. I guess playing this guy would give me a spiritual way of righting that wrong.

Q5-1: This character is the type of guy that fell into the under world as a teenager with a "make a deal with the devil" type of acquaintance, asking him to fulfill a desire and in return promising them his soul. The returned favor was to keep demons inside of them and to have the power to walk the earth in his body.
The likes of character was being romantic and enjoying the joy of fame, power, money. However, he didn't enjoy being manipulated or loved by anyone until he found that woman that he loved dearly. The age of this character is around his mid 20's to early 30's. Dressing casual, to closer to business casual.

Q5-2: David was a life reckless type of guy, until he departed and returned because of the "fly paper" effect. He once was full of bottled up anger and resentment, and always let it out in an explosive type of way which caused him to make the accident with Rick come to life, in a large town with a rebellious community. Loved to drive fast, and dodge in and out of traffic as well as partying heavily at bars and clubs, dressing preppy casual until that day he came back because of the guilt he felt from the accident, and now he comes back respectful dressed in a fashioned suit, withgood posture, and manners with a sense of honor to teach and help others get through their own webs.

    ***BONUS***
Q6-1: This character had toast, and milk for breakfast.
Q6-2: David has only eaten an apple for he is upon the afterlife, and has only memory of not disappointing his higher power.

  37. What do you like about the character?
Macy is sassy and not afraid to say what she thinks.
Molly is trying to figure herself out which is something i think we all can relate to.

What is similar between you and that character?
I am both. I'm bold and say what i think but still currently figuring out how life works.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
Yes, my sister is always unsure of her abilities and my other sister is overly-confident like Macy.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
Well,i've had moments where i've given more than i recieve i think that's gonna help me with Macy and i've had responsibilites thrown at me when i don't want it so that's Molly.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
Macy is the youngest out of 3 kids, her brother and sister are a doctor and law student. Her parents only pay attention to them and always think Macy is such a child and will never live up to their expectations. So she looks for attention and love from others. She idolizes Gwen, the head cheerleader in her school and has been stalking her for 2 years.

Molly is an only child raised by her single mom. She has never been good at talking or make friends. She loves singing and is in the church choir.

  38. What do you like about the character? The character of "Dance With the Wind" is strong and brave.

What is similar between you and that character? We both have the courage to accept things as they are and embrace them, learning to live alongside them without fear.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character? I have been through quite a bit with certain people in my life, who once had the power to destroy me. I took that power back and they can't touch me anymore. I get a familiar feeling while reading this monologue.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character.: Like me, perhaps she also has been hurt by someone. She took control over the situation and has learned that she has nothing to fear from them, or the situations in her life.

    1. Hi Bree, my response was somewhat similar to yours. I too have had a rough childhood but have overcome things and like you, have accepted them for what they are. I am glad you found a role in which you can relate, I think it'll be a great way to act out a role! You can literally become your character! Best of luck to you!

  39. Which character is most like you? I believe Cyril the man with the big nose from the humorous play "Big Nose by Doug Larson". He is made fun of by a physical feature but rises above it due to his personality. I can relate to this in my middle school years. I had severe acne and was bullied and beaten down quite a bit, but I found a way through humor to overcome my anxiety and wear it like a shield.

What do you like about the character? Cryil expresses many characteristics such as: humor, charisma, charm, sarcasm, and determination. Once a character is only given a few lines, and in those lines able to create an entire person with feelings and strength, thats something to admire about the writer and character.

What is similar between you and that character? Our personalities, we both like to see things through humor but we also both have a strong and ambitious outlook on how we see things.

Do you know someone else who is like the character? No, I can relate with him more myself than anyone I know.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character? My middle school experience, when I had acne. I was a very broken person at first. I held pity parties and became somewhat of a recluse. Then I started righting some comedy scripts and asked my english teacher if I could perform plays as extra credit. Once people started acting out my lines and noticing me for a comedian, I became a "class clown" of sorts. In this way, I can relate to Cyril.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

Based on everything I have read about Cyril so far, he wore shakesperian clothing when performing his roles in the theatre. Not because this was his normal dress but more of a mockery to the performing cast. I think he's probably in his late 20's or so, do to the things he says and way he acts. He seems young but somewhat experienced and set in his ways of life. As ive said before, I think Cyril was at first being beaten down by his "big nose" complex, and rose above it through humor. At the beginning of the play, "Big Nose, Part 1,by Doug Larson", Cyril end up competing with the character captain, on who can make the best nose jokes in order to win a prize. He makes fun of himself by years of hearing the mockery and rising above it. He is a very strong character, which is why I would be more than happy to play his part.
