TIME and PLACE

A few years back in old Idaho

CAST OF CHARACTERS

SPUD: An old man who tells the story of Jackie and the Potato Stalk

JACKIE: A young girl who loves potatoes

MAMA: Jackie’s mother

COW: A cow named Bossy that is sold to Spud**

GIANT: Not really a giant but really tall. (actor can either be a tall kid or adult – guitar playing skills helpful but a recording can be used instead)

JACK: A bratty boy who stole the GOOSE who lays golden eggs.

GOOSE: Lays golden eggs and only says “honk”**

**GOOSE and COW can be played by the same actor is needed

SCENE 1

(The background is a western nature scene with big mountains and blue sky in the background)

SPUD

On remote and rustic ranch, there lived a little girl named Jackie who loved potatoes.

JACKIE

                    (Carries her basket of potatoes)

I love them with butter.

SPUD

She couldn't resist the smell of baked potatoes. She loved fall because it was harvest time.

JACKIE

Mama, Mama. I picked some potatoes. Can we bake them now?

MAMA

Is that all we have?

JACKIE

I'm afraid so.

MAMA

It's been a bad year for all the crops. There’s not much of anything.

                    (COW wanders in and looks around for food)

JACKIE

No beans?

MAMA

No beans.

JACKIE

No carrots?

MAMA

No carrots.

JACKIE

No peas?

MAMA

No peas.

JACKIE

Good. I hate peas.

MAMA

Just a few potatoes.

JACKIE

That's all I like anyway.

MAMA

But this will only be enough for one dinner. What will we do after that?

JACKIE

We could eat the cow.

                    (COW stops and looks scared. Starts to sneak out)

MAMA

No…

                    (COW stops and sighs with relief)

We'll sell her instead.

Part 2

MAMA

(COW looks upset and starts to sneak out again)

Come here, Bossy.

                    (COW shakes her head no)

JACKIE

                    (Grabs COW)

Where do I take her?

MAMA

To the old man in town.

JACKIE

The crazy old man?

MAMA

He's not crazy. Just a little weird.

JACKIE

So weird isn't as bad as crazy?

MAMA

Just get going and get something good for the cow.

JACKIE

Let's go Bossy.

                    (COW moos in protest. MAMA exits)

SPUD

And that's when Jackie appeared at my door.

(SPUD can roll in a door to stand behind or just stand ready and JACKIE can pantomime knocking on his door)

JACKIE

Get over here, Bossy.

                    (Pulls COW to SPUD and knocks)

SPUD

Well Howdy. How can I help you?

JACKIE

We are poor and have no food except for a few potatoes. We must sell our cow.

SPUD

I will buy your cow.

                    (Takes COW and scratches behind her ear and she's happy)

JACKIE

Thank you, mister.

SPUD

I have something you'll enjoy. Spuds.

                    (Hands JACKIE a shiny cloth bag made of a magical looking material)

JACKIE

Potatoes? But we already have potatoes.

SPUD

But these are magic spuds.

JACKIE

Magic potatoes?

SPUD

They will give you more wonderful treasures than you can ever imagine.

JACKIE

I can imagine some pretty good things.

SPUD

Take them to your mother and all will be good again on your ranch.

JACKIE

Thank you, Mister. Good-bye, Bossy.

                    (COW sticks her tongue out at JACKIE)

JACKIE AND THE POTATO STALK

Part 3

SPUD

Jackie ran excitedly back to her Mama to tell her the news of the magical spuds.

JACKIE

Mama, Mama. Look at what I got!

MAMA

A little bag? I hope that's not it.

JACKIE

No, inside are magic potatoes.

                    (Pulls out potatoes)

MAMA

Magic potatoes?!

JACKIE

The old man said they would make our dreams come true.

MAMA

Dreams won't feed us, Jackie. I can't believe that crazy old coot would do this to us!

                    (Takes potatoes)

JACKIE

Mama, no!

                    (MAMA tosses potatoes to DR stage)

MAMA

Go to your room and don't come out until I get back from the old man’s.

JACKIE

What are you going to do?

MAMA

I'm going to get our cow back.

                    (Exits)

JACKIE

Oh, Mama. I'm so sorry.

                    (JACKIE cries and curls up on the floor)

SPUD

But I did not lie to the little girl. Those potatoes were magic and while Jackie slept, a most amazing thing happened!

(Lights fade and magical Western guitar music is heard. Moonlight hits DR and then a rumble sound and a potato rises to from the ground. NOTE: You can stage this in a variety of ways. Have a rope from the ceiling that pulls up the potato stalk or have a drawing on the background that is uncovered from the bottom up. The sound wakes JACKIE)

SPUD

When Jackie wakes, she sees a most amazing thing. A giant spudstalk.

JACKIE

                    (She rises)

Is that... it's a... giant potato stalk!

                    (She jumps up and down excited)

Those potatoes are magic! Magic! Magic! Magic!

SPUD

Told you so.

JACKIE

                    (Looks up)

It's so tall. I bet I can see Boise from up there.

SPUD

Climb up and see.

JACKIE

I think I will.

SPUD

You won't be sorry.
