Fun Educational Classroom Learning Games for Drama Speech Communication Skills

Here are some excellent games and activities for the classroom that promote and practice communication skills for speech and drama. Plays are a great way to work with different levels of readers. By using a script for Reader's Theatre, then you can give larger parts in the play to stronger readers and smaller parts for struggling readers.  For example, in the script "Cell Phone Zombies" you can cast two of your stronger readers as Baker and Jones and then cast a couple of developing readers as Zombie Joe and Zombie Moe. Reading a play is a fun way to practice reading and gives reluctant readers a chance to shine with something small so they can build their confidence.

Improv Games not only help with speech and communication skills, but they also foster team work in a classroom. When students do improv, they must work together for a common goal. This makes improv a good tool for building cooperation among kids in a classroom or group.

Monologues are helpful for giving students a chance to practice speaking in front of a group. It is always better to start with something short. I would recommend having monologues be one of the last activities you do with student because it can be the most challenging and scary since student are alone in front of the group. Monologue would be a good final project for a drama, speech or communication unit.

Here are some short monologue to pick from:
