Lesson 5 Plot Free Online Writing Classes for New Writers

Lesson 5 - PLOT - Now you will make notes about what happens.  What happens in the story? When does the story take place?  Does the story happen now, in the past or in the future?

Look at your characters and your setting and your original notes and ideas?  What is something that can happen to your characters in the setting you picked?

ASSIGNMENT 5A: Brainstorm as many ideas as possible about what could happen to your characters and what might happen in the setting you picked. Go back over your ideas and pick your favorites. Ideally come up with one favorite thing that will happen or a series of related things for your plot. Save these notes for lesson 6.

ASSIGNMENT 5B: In the comments below, talk about a story or movie that had a really interesting or surprising plot that is memorable. What is a movie or book you watch or read again and again? Is the plot something that keeps you coming back for more? Why?

OPTIONAL BONUS: Respond to a post by another student and discuss writing. Keep the posts positive and supportive. Students who are negative toward other students will not receive a certificate or instructor feedback at the end of the class.

If you need help at any time, type up your notes and email your question and your notes to me at doug@freedrama.net

  1. Lesson 5B is two parts and it is a lesson that makes you really think. There are so many great books and movies that can be used for this section. I would say for me a movie that has an interesting but surprising plot is Crimson Tide. In this movie you see a glimpse of what being in a sub marine can be like and how hard life can be for the soldiers who are in these vehicles for months at a time. It also adds the surprise of what can happen when the chain of command is not followed or trusted. The two people responsible for the ship and the crew went to war with each other causing a divide in a time when war was likely to take place. This left them unable as a crew to do their job. The writing and acting of this was amazing and I would place it in my top 20. The second part is what movie or story that keeps me coming back, and the movie I can say I will never get tired of watching is The Crow. The plot of this movie is great and it also is a movie that provides a little bit of things for everyone. You have the love story which is the main story, then you have the revenge part of the story. The revenge part of course is driven by the love. Then it shows you a realistic look at the underground scene in a bad city and what can happen if the wrong people have the power. It really keeps you interested by all the different scenes that shows you things like swallowing bullets with whiskey shots. You normally wouldn't do that or even think about it so it makes you look twice. It also shows you what it takes to film a great movie and how important it is to have a great cast of people that fit the roles they are playing. I think it was casted perfectly and could not imagine other people playing the roles. I have watched thousands of movies and several live theatre performances and thought wow bad casting. Not in this movie it was spot on and enjoyable to watch. I also would have to say another great movie that follows the same story line would be The Wraith. This movie has the exact same premise about a guy dying and coming back to get revenge and love is a main part of the story line. It also has great action sequences that make you think about life from a different perspective. The list of course goes on and on.
