Free Online Acting Education Class 2018 Lesson 7

Lesson 7

Now it is time to prepare yourself to act. After you selected two monologues to perform on camera from this link https://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/2017/11/free-one-minute-monologues-for-actors.html then answer the following questions in the blog comments below.

Which character in the monologues is most like you?

When you pick a character, ask yourself the following:

What do you like about the character?

What is similar between you and that character?

Do you know someone else who is like the character?

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

I once heard an actor say they always decide what that character might have for breakfast and that helps them figure the character out.

There are no wrong answers. The important thing is to learn as much as possible about the character before performing the character.

Post in the comments below your answers to the questions above.

You must then respond to another actor in the blog discussion below. Your interactions MUST be positive :) ***

ACTING TIP FROM STELLA ADLER: "The actor has to develop his body. The actor has to work on his voice. But the most important thing the actor has to work on is his mind." Post your replies to the above questions in the comments below.

  1. 1 between Cindy and Mindy I think Mindy is more like me,because I usually am not that depressed as Cindy..(only deep inside me if my brain explodes ,thats why I can play it)
2 About the character Cindy I like the way she is talking with her self ..it reminds me a lot of things about myself..About Mindy ,I like the way she tries to impress her crush..Something that I ve never done (to have someone to impress, to be that naive)
Cindy has something simillar to me ,yes.To see the bad side of herself...in that situation ..only the bad side.I ve done that a lot of times and it helps me realize my feelings and thoughts.Mindy has a kind of naive attitude and she tries to be someone she is not ,just to impress this boy..Thats something I do ,even if I dont understand it the most of the times...
I realize that the most people I know have these kind of feelings and behaviours ..We all have the same feelings..
Cindy is a girl with really low self esteem ..She would never approach someone easily...She is closed to her self and tries to figure out who she is ...She dreams the day she will be free and happy..she stares at the prince through her window but doesnt take the decision to make any move... She is just a scared girl that MUST have experienced bullying in her young age and that made her afraid.. afraid of the world she is around ..I can imagine her acting like a sweet little girl in front of her family ..but when she looks her reflection in the mirror she sees a monster ... She is trying to find her self through thoughts ..Now I understand how simillar she is to me!
Mindy might be 19 or 20 years old..I think her crush is her best friend, because she talks to him being really comfortable .She s talking about the crush she thinks he has on her ,trying to make him laugh and enjoy the moment ..It turns out that it wasnt fun at all ...She turns out believing that all these was a mistake .. I would say that Mindy was a funny teenager that made everyone laugh..She never had a lot of experiences in relationships..thats why she s not confident enough to make a move .Unlike Cindy ,Mindy is not so hard at herself ,but she s still trying to find someone to count on ..She must have had a not so reliable frienship.. I really want to get into her.
Well ,I have a lot of experiences that helps me understand a lot of emotions..and thats why I enjoy acting..Its waking all these emotions and makes me live, for one specific moment ..Not only acting but generally art does that!
(ps sorry ,I cant answer to any comments because this lesson doesnt have any)

    1. I think it is great you have emotions you can pull on for acting out Cindy. Good luck with portraying depression. It is such a horrible disease.

  2. Which character in the monologues is most like you?
    I am most like Dotty

What do you like about the character?
I like that she is flirtatious and dreamy

What is similar between you and that character?
We both daydream about boys, we want to be noticed

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
    yes

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
    College

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
She is a hardworking college grad in her dream career. She comes from a small town, but has moved to NYC to work at a law firm. She likes excelling and proving to others that girls can do what the men can do. She loves to read and daydream, she only shops from top designers. She is 29.

  3. 1. I think I am more like Jenny from the monologue, "A Thing for Nerds".

    2. What I like about her is she dreams about nerdy guys of all kinds of social variety. I also like that she is flirtatious and beautiful in a nerdy kind of way.

    3. What is similar about me and her is that we're both nerds. To me, I was into movies, computers and video games. We both wear eyeglasses (I have astigmatism).

    4. Yes, I think there are few of them.

    5. Through high school and after.

    6. Jenny is a smart college senior who wants to become an actress. She comes from an upper middle class, peaceful neighborhood, but she has to move in her own apartment in order to become independent. She likes to hang out a few nerdy guys who are as nice and as smart as her. She dislikes going on a date with pretty jocks because they are too superficial and dumb. She is 23 years old. She dresses casual, like blouses, T-shirts, and jeans.

    1. I absolutely love the back story you created for Jenny! I actually thought it was in the script at first, i was like, “where did she get all of this”. Amazing, great job! Good luck!

  4. Which character in the monologues is most like you?
The girl from Dreaming of Dragons

When you pick a character, ask yourself the following:
What do you like about the character?
In Dreaming of Dragons, I like that I relate to the girl. In Catchick, I just like her character overall, the fact that she is literally a cat-human who wants to be a human.

What is similar between you and that character?
In Dreaming of Dragons, The girl and I are both naive, young and overthinkers. In Catchick, we both want something that is hard to achieve, She wants to be a human while in my case, I want to be an actress.

Do you know someone else who is like the character?
    A few.

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?
In Dreaming of Dragons, the girl seems to overthink and imagine things. I do that to and make it hard to fall asleep. In Catchick, The girl really wants to be human and goes to ask help from a scientist. Kind of similar to me beacause I really want to be an actress and I email a bunch people for auditions. The difference is though, she has access to people who can help her, I live somewhere where there are no acting oppportunities so I have to ask for people for help from other places and never actually reply sadly.

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?
Dreaming of Dragons-the girl is a strong girl whose brother is being abused by their father.
The dragon represents their father. She loves dragons but they are
dangerous so she stays away from them. She likes playing with her brother
a lot and doesn't like their father that much, but doesn't hate him
either. She is 10 years old. Her family is below middle class but not
poor, so her clothes aren't that expensive but last long.
Catchick-the girl had a scientist as her father but he's not her real father. The girl and the family cat (who she isn't fond of)went into one of her father's inventions and morphed into one mutant cat-human. She ran away and after a few years she came back to the scientist to fix her. She really misses being human and doesn't enjoy having cat powers. She is a teenager now and likes wearing black to avert attention.

  5. The character I am most like in the monologues, is the main character in “End the Hurting”. I’m a lot like Jenny too from “Thing for Nerds” but in my opinion, my personal belief, I can relate to and show more emotion for “End the Hurting”.
I like the character in “End the hurting” because at first, when things get bad, their down, sad, hurting, they don’t feel like they have a chance, no hope, but then when they realized, their getting too far down that dark hole, they tell themselves, firmly tell themselves, it’s time to stop this pain, time to stick up to it, no more getting pushed around by a force that can either drown you, or make you strong.
The similarities I see, is the braveness, how strong we became when things started turning for the worse, the firmness. Life isn’t cupcakes and rainbows, everyone suffers from problems, some worse than others, but it’s how we deal with them, that’s what makes us different. The way I dealt with my problems at first, was feeling sorry for myself, but when I had enough, I stood up to it, and it made me strong, it made me the girl I am today. I see those same emotions and feelings in the main character in “End the Hurting”.
I know many people who stood up to pain and put their faith where it belongs.
Yes, many actually. My mother was a drug user, it got to the point where I had to live with my father, and my step sisters had to go to foster care. In my opinion, it made me stronger than more depressed. I found out how to be brave and say my opinion, and that’s what I see in the script. I absolutely love it, and I’m excited to act it out, cause honestly, it won’t be acting.
I’m making the character a girl, who has been through events that made her sad, feel worthless and sorry for herself, but then got turned around, by faith, friendships, love, and support around her. I see her around the age 15, a causal girl who hates skirts and dresses and sticks with sweat pants and sweat shirts, with those Nike sneakers, all the colors you can think of. I’m going to name her Brielle, she likes fruit, sports, video games, and reading. She hates meat (vegetarian) and has a problem of hiding her true feelings, not letting them come out, making her the down character she is in the beginning. Her mother died of cancer and her father was never in the picture, she now lives with her Aunt. She’s a freshman in high school and is having trouble with peer pressure. She’ll be ok though, she’s becoming strong ;).
