Sleeping Giant aka A New Dawn - serious drama stage play script - 3 actors

This is a new script that quite a bit different for me. I'm curious to get feedback. I may write more of the script if there is enough interest, so it doesn't seem complete, that's because there easily could be more to the story. The scene has three characters. They can be male or female but it is written for 2 males and 1 female.

If you'd like to use this script, please ask for permission from doug@freedrama.net (include the title "Sleeping Giant" in the request)

THE SLEEPING GIANT (aka A NEW DAWN) by D. M. Larson

EDDY
Where am I? What is this place?  What happened to me?

KELLY
Take it easy. You were in an accident.

EDDY
Accident?  What accident?  I don’t remember anything.

KELLY
Please, you need to stop struggling.

EDDY
Why am I tied down?

KELLY
For your own protection.

EDDY
My own protection? What are you talking about? What’s going on here?

KELLY
Please, you need to calm down.

(From above, a strange voice is heard over an intercom)

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
Give him something to calm him down.

EDDY
Give me something? What are you giving me? Who said that? Who are you?  What is going on here?

(KELLY puts a drug in his IV)

KELLY
There, that should help you feel better.

EDDY
I don’t understand what’s going on? I don’t remember any accident.

KELLY
You don’t remember any of it?

EDDY
Nothing.

KELLY
What’s the last thing you remember?

EDDY
I was… at work. I think I was at work.

KELLY
Yes, that’s right. Do you remember what happened?

EDDY
No.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
He’s lying.

EDDY
Who is that?  Who are you?!

KELLY
He’s not important. Talk to me.

EDDY
He sounds important.
KELLY
I’m here to help you, okay. Please tell me everything you remember.

EDDY
I don’t want to remember.

KELLY
It was terrible wasn’t it?

EDDY
Yes.

KELLY
I’m here to help you process what happened. And we need your help to figure out what caused the accident.

EDDY
Who is “we”? I don’t like talking to people I can’t see.

(KELLY looks up and there is silence)

KELLY
If you answer my questions first, then we can answer some of yours.

EDDY
You’re lying…you’re afraid of him aren’t you?  Why are you afraid?

KELLY
I’m not afraid.

EDDY
Something not right here.

KELLY
We saved you from a terrible accident. We’re the reason you’re still alive. We helped you and now you need to help us.

(EDDY considers – sees KELLY getting nervous [she keeps glancing up] then EDDY sighs)

EDDY
Fine. What do you want to know?

KELLY
Tell me about your day… anything unusual happen?

EDDY
Most of the day was pretty ordinary. Combing through code. Coffee breaks. Watercooler chats. Then I got this weird popup window on my computer. That’s when things got weird. I couldn’t stop looking at it. It was nonsense – flashes of light and images and numbers… but I couldn’t look away… I couldn’t move. I felt dizzy then I felt like I was going to get sick. But I was stuck… just staring… stunned. I wanted to fight it. Something inside me wanted to resist, but I couldn’t.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
You were chosen.

EDDY
Chosen? Chosen for what?!

KELLY
Do you remember what happened next?

EDDY
What is going on here?

KELLY
Please… tell me what you remember. It’s important.

EDDY
Everything got weird after that.  Like a dream.  No, more like a nightmare. I felt like I was glowing. Like I was going to explode. Everything around me was melting. It’s like I was tripping out on drugs… a bad acid trip or something. Not that I’d know… I’ve never taken drugs before but I wondered if that’s what it felt like. I heard strange sounds around me… faint voices… muffled screams… I didn’t know what was happening. I stumbled around trying to find help. But everyone was suddenly gone. Everything was gone. It’s like the whole world melted away.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
Or a city block.

EDDY
What is he talking about?

KELLY
There was a terrible accident. The building you work in was destroyed.

EDDY
Is everyone okay?

(KELLY looks up)

EDDY
What happened to everyone?

KELLY
You’re the only survivor.

EDDY
How is that possible?

KELLY
That’s what we’re trying to figure out.

EDDY
Was it me? Did I do something?

KELLY
The evidence suggests you were connected to what happened there.

EDDY
Connected?  Or responsible? But how could I do that.  How could I wipe out an entire city block? That’s impossible.

DR. BROTHERS
Nothing is impossible anymore.

EDDY
What are you talking about? Who is that? You’re really pissing me off.

(KELLY looks nervously up)

KELLY
We can talk about something else now.

EDDY
Good.

KELLY
Let’s talk about your past… you served in the military.

EDDY
I did. Three tours in Iraq.

KELLY
Three?

EDDY
I kept wanting to go back… to serve. I felt like we were making a difference. The people wanted us there.  They were thankful we were helping them. And that’s why I signed up. I wanted to make the world a better place… I wish I were still there helping them. They need our help more than ever.

DR. BROTHERS
You can help them now.

EDDY
I’m just going to ignore him… what did you give me?

KELLY
It was something to calm you down.

EDDY
It’s working.

KELLY
Good. I’m glad I could help.

EDDY
We all just want to help. We all just want to make things better. Is that what you’re doing, Doc?  Helping me out… making things better?

DR. BROTHERS
Yes.

EDDY
Is killing an entire office building full of people helping?

(Silence)

KELLY
It was an accident. A terrible accident. No one expected that to happen.

EDDY
Like Japan… World War II… no one knew the bomb would be that bad… that terrible.
Why’d you ask me about my military experience?

KELLY
How many times were you injured in combat?  How many times were you in the hospital?

EDDY
There’s a connection isn’t there? The military… the hospitals… the accident.

KELLY
We’re trying to find a connection, yes.

EDDY
They didn’t something to me… the military… did they put something inside me?

KELLY
Something is different about you… yes.

EDDY
What did they do?

KELLY
That’s what we’re here to find out.

EDDY
What are you going to do? Experiment on me? Cut me open?  Dissect me?

KELLY
We won’t do anything to hurt you.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
You’re too important.

EDDY
More important than my coworkers? More important than all the people who died in the accident?

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
Yes.

EDDY
I… I killed them didn’t I?  They’re dead… because of me?

KELLY
We should let him rest, doctor. He’s still recovering from the accident.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
The session is not over.

EDDY
What more do you want from me?

KELLY
If you had the power to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

EDDY
What kind of question is that?

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
Answer the question.

EDDY
The power to do anything… like a genie granted me a wish… that was you are doctor? A genie? Sorry… those are good drugs you gave me… made me a big loopy.  Well… what would I do?  There’s this family… I met them on my first tour of Iraq.  I was injured and separated from my unit.  They found me and took care of me… one of the little kids ran through a combat zone to find help for me. It’s amazing what those kids go through every day… what they see, what they live through… or don’t live through.  Each time I went back after that, I’d find that family and thank them for saving my life.  Last time I went, their father was missing… I tried so hard to find him… I never did… Now I see on the news that ISIS is over-running their country. The Iraqi army is running in fear. We left them vulnerable and unprotected.  If I had a wish… any wish… I’d go and help that family, protect them… in fact… I’d protect everyone.  I would do the impossible. I’d bring peace to the Middle East.  How’s that for a wish?

KELLY
It’s a good wish.

DR. BROTHERS (OFF)
Next question.

KELLY
He needs to rest, Doctor.

DR. BROTHER (OFF)
I will determine when he rests.

KELLY
I think he decided actually. He’s asleep.

DR. BROTHER (OFF)
The sleeping giant. Waiting for a new dawn.
