Free Acting School online

So you would like to be an actor?

The first step is to figure out why you want to be one. Ask yourself, "Why do I want to be an actor?"

If you want to be rich and famous, that can be a long and difficult road that requires a lot of luck.

But if you want to be an actor because it is fun or it brings you joy or you like entertaining others, then this could be the right choice for you.

Decide why you want to act, figure out why it is important to you and what kind of actor you want to be.

STEP ONE: KEEP A JOURNAL (POST BELOW)

To get a certificate of completion for this class you must complete all 10 class discussions and create 2 videos of your acting.  (If you're unable to do a video, then there is an audio option).

Day 1 question: "Why do you want to be an actor?"
(post your answer in the blog comments below)

You must post your answer to the question above in the blog comments and then respond to another actor's post in this course.  Give words of encouragement. Share your experiences. Or discuss acting.  Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and will NOT be considered as a monologue performer for our YouTube page. You will hear from your instructor (Emmy Award winner Doug Larson) when you complete your two video monologues for this course (see later lessons).

FINAL EXAM (explained in later lessons in the course):

You will also need to complete two recordings of yourself acting (audio or video) and make changes to each after getting suggestions from your instructor. You want these to be contrasting monologues - one drama and one comedy - in order to show your range.  This will be discussed more later in the class.

After you post your journal below, go to Day 2 of the acting school:

Be nice! Don't act like a pirate in these discussions.

  5. Humans are complex creatures -
I myself may experience a range of emotions, even just within a day.
I enjoy exploring this complexity by identifying with and expressing
the various kinds of thoughts, feelings and behaviours that we all experience
    via the medium of acting.
I enjoy delving into the depths of despair, then coming up
for breath through comedy. I enjoy allowing myself to feel deeply,
and feel the pain or joy for the character I am playing. These are some of the
main reasons why I want to be an actress.

  7. I haven't acted very much but the few times i did recently and in the past, i felt so much joy like yes! this is exactly who i want to be. I want to imitate other characters and see the outcome. I like to write stories and songs etc. However, i liked the feeling i got from doing an improv show. It made me thick quick and just go with the flow whereas with writing you take your time to put into paper what you want. I want to be an actor also because when watching movies sometimes i forget friends are around me when i pick a character out of the movie and try to do what he/she did. I want to be an actress because it makes my heart beat you know, the good exciting sort of beat.

  10. Hello everyone! My name is Michelle, and here's why I aspire to become an actress.

I want to be an actress because it's one of my dream careers. However, I'm not specifically aiming to become an actress; I am actually aiming to become a voice-over actress. But in order to become one, I must first know the ways of acting. So, that's what brought me to this course.

To me, acting is inspirational and fun. I feel inspired by how actors portray their characters in their own way, and I can tell that they enjoy what they do. I wish to experience that and be a part of it as well. Also, I was inspired to act after reading a Japanese manga called Cat Street by Yoko Kamio. I won't go in detail in what it's about, but the manga does feature a girl who is an actress. Her name is Keito Aoyama. Just reading her story made me realize how important the human emotion is in acting, and just following your heart of what you want to do in life is inspiring.

In addition to inspiration and enjoyment, there are some skill sets and traits that I'd like to improve on before becoming an actress. Some of those skill sets and traits are: memorization (for scripts), handling rejection, range, handling stage fright, my vocal range, gestures, improvisation, and confidence. If I could gain and master these skill sets and traits, I believe that I can be an actress.

Overall, I hope that I will learn a lot from this course and have fun as well. Also, thank you for creating this course, D.M. Larson!

    3. Wow Michelle. A voice-over actress is quite exciting I have done a few voice-overs before and trust me when I say it takes a lot of practice. It took me a bazillion tries before I got it and even now I'm still learning. To be honest I actually used to hate my voice I felt like it wasn't feminine enough but it was the encoragement of some friends that changed my mind. I believe you will be a great voice over actress. ❤

    4. Thank you for your encouragement, Chantal! Also, it's nice that you have experience with voice-over acting. And yes, it does require a lot of practice! I will do my best with this class as well as practicing.

And wow! I could relate to you with my voice; it's quite deep for a girl, so I wouldn't be surprised if I get cast as a young boy, tomboy, or mature woman. But let's see what the future has in store for me! :)

  14. “Why do you want to be an actor?” Day One

Thinking about this an answer to this question I had to reflect It’s really hard to explain because I really do love being an actor. I get to go into a story and get to be someone else or tap into different emotions, that can take you to different places. Acting pulls out your true self and I get to enjoy that feeling like a child playing dress up. I would like to be an actor like Tom Hardy or Idris Elba where I could move through various genres but still be able to do great drama.

  23. Hello, My name is Chantal. 😃

From childhood I was always known as the dramatic one in the family. I could easily make up a situation and cry about it as if it were real. Around the age of five I fell in love with the hit Disney channel show 'That's So Raven' and naturally I felt drwan to the lead character Raven. The more I grew the more I fell in love with her and the character she played.
I want to be an actress because I want viewers to relate to the characters I portray. I want people to relate to who I am as a person just like how I related to Raven.

  24. I want to be an actor because it makes me happy, and I feel comfortable in front of an audience. Ever since I was a kid I had loved pretending to be someone other than myself. It was like an escpade for me, but I got into theatre programs and I really fell with acting. It feels like a part of me, like family, music, and singing is a part of me too.

  25. The idea of becoming an actor come to my mind when i was 12 years old. I was thinking about what to do when i will grow up, i looked at all the possible professions like business, engineering, doctor, chef etc. But nothing was close to me.I also thought about acting but i then i said to myself that this is impossible. And one day i was reading about popular actors histories like Channing Tatum who was a stripper before becoming an actor or Danny Trejo who was a drug dealer or George Clooney's pretty sad story who was broke and lived at his friends and so on. And something came to my mind like if they could than and i can but there appear another problem , i don't have any experience and i am not living in a big city or something.
So the answer to your question "Why i wand to be an actor" is because this is what is most closely to my spirit and my mind, that is making me to feel calm, good and comfortable. Like when i see a scene in a movie and try to make the face and the voice of the actors. And if acting is bringing me so much joy and happiness i want to bring this to everyone else.

When I realized the effect I had on people as it relates to entertaining them whether it was me impersonating someone or something, dancing or just being silly, I quickly took a liking to it. So here i am on a re discovery path i love acting the idea of playing someone else meeting new people and inspiring other to follow there dreams in a world with so much rubbish to juts be able to give a bit of hope and energy back would be amazing. To do something that makes me proud and friends family proud and just to generally achieve something. Since i was young i have been a bit of a jester dancing acting being silly and now maybe i can turn all that energy in to something magical.

  44. When I was a kid I would always play pretend with my little sister. Later on in 5th grade I signed up for drama class. The first play I auditioned for I got the leading role. I loved being onstage because I didn't feel like myself who was shy and kinda introvert. I was able to be loud and expressible and everyone praised me for it. I went out for many plays and I always got a major part. I loved acting and it became a passion. Somewhere along the line I found interest in other things that took center stage in my life. Recently I realized that I still have my acting passion. And somewhat of the talent. I want to take this class to improve my rusty spokes and get my wheels turning again. My end game is to become a movie and tv actress. I was not able to do the tv additions as a kid so now as an adult I refuse to let someone tell me that I can not follow my dream. Because I am that one in a million.

    1. I wish I had more experience with being in plays and things like that when I was younger, and I feel you on all of this. I have always been shy and a insecure about myself as a result of all this anxiety that has been building up throughout my life about my future, and I think that channeling those feelings into a character that I can play would be a great experience for me. Not only that, I'm a sucker for movies and have recognized every time I watch one that I have major interest in becoming an actress. I know that the business is kind of hard to get into and be very successful in, but I'm the kind of person who puts her heart and soul into everything she does, and those are the things that I'm sure any employer or director is looking for in someone who is auditioning. I'm very excited and hopeful for what is to come, and I hope that one day you are able to live your dream, too. :)

  45. Since I was younger I was interested in acting. I loved to dance and make my family laugh. I also like to see my friends laugh when I make them laugh. Making others happy makes me happy. I am interested in acting because its all about the feelings involved with it. By watching TV shows, movies, plays they give you emotions and I want to be able to make people happy, excited and even sad by playing out a character well. For me its all about the emotions and then having fun while doing it

  47. Ever since I was younger, I have sort of had it in the back of my mind that acting would be an incredible experience for me, because I found that I could easily recreate scenes from my favorite movies, and I was also able to come up with scenes on my own without having any kind of script. However, I also had a lot of maturing to do, and jumped into other areas of interest, as I realized acting was my passion at a very, very young age, and I had been told that being in movies or making music professionally was out of my reach (I guess I just sort of accepted that). In the past, I've been interested in being a pediatric brain surgeon, and even applied to a program that would set me on course with classes to do so, I've been interested in joining the Navy or the National Guard, I am very musically inclined, though I am not a strong singer, and I love writing. I did a ton of research on all of these things, and writing has so far been one of the things I'm most passionate about. However, on New Years Eve, I watched James Cameron's "Titanic" after having not watched it for a while, and sort of dove back into this Leo Mania phase and couldn't stop watching anything Leonardo DiCaprio appeared in. It was then that I finally realized, as a freshman in high school, that I was so entirely interested in becoming an actress. I love movies, and I love the way actors and actresses can make me feel, and I aspire to make people feel that way, too. I have yet to talk to my parents about it, because I know they could be a great help with finding auditions and things like that, but I don't have any formal experience with acting or playing parts in plays or anything like that, so I decided that it was time for me to do more of my research. I found this blog, and figured that if I was going to be successful as an actress, waiting any longer would just give my anxiety time to talk myself out of it. So here I am, as unprepared for this as I could be. I want to see where this takes me.

  55. Hey, my name is Sophie. Ever since I was young I have wanted to become an actress. I remember making movies with my siblings and performing shows for my parents since I was 8 or 9 then again, I still do shows for them and make movies with my siblings. We dance to music, sing songs, put on a play or make movies. It is easier to make movies now that I know how to edit. Anyways, I didn't ever really know why I wanted to be an actress. I would ask myself the question all the time, "Was it for fame, was it for money?" I know now that wasn't the case. I am very social and I like making new friends, I like seeing other people happy. I want to act because you get to work with people that can soon become your friends and you can entertain others. It is important to me to become one so that I can make people smile, or laugh. I just love making people happy and it would also mean a lot to me if my sisters could see me on TV and see that I made my dream come true. I think that I want to be a comedic actor or in a Disney show. I also love kids so if they could see me and maybe laugh it would make my day. I am young so acting wouldn't become my whole life, yet.

  58. I would love the opportunity to be an actor, because i love to entertain people, make them laugh, cry (for the character of course) and make them happy. I have always loved entertaining people, since i was always the class clown. I also have a YouTube Channel and i upload videos to it daily, which shows that i am imaginative, entertaining and stick to a schedule. As i have said many times in this comment, I love entertaining people, but i have never thought about acting as an option until about 3 days ago, when i watched the 5th Wave. I don't usually notice how the actor plays the character, but for some reason Chloe Grace Moletz skills caught my attention. After the movie finished i was realized i wanted to give acting a shot, and i was so excited! That night i stayed up to at least 1am researching on how to become an actor and where to start and i came across this website :)
The only factor that i think will let me down is being shy :( I've read at least 5 "articles" on how to concur confidence issues but i havent found one to help me. I've always been shy around new people and i hate that. Well at least when i'm with a friend im not as shy, but it sucks.
Well i know someone who does acting lessons, so i might see where he does it and maybe join.
Well i got a bit sidetracked and talked more about then why i want to be an actor, but oh well.

ALSO one question... Should i start applying and auditioning for things before i start acting lessons?

I remember the very moment that I decided to become an actress. I was 5 years old and I saw the movie Platoon for the first time. I was so wrapped up onto the character, and they’er struggles living and dying during the Vietnam war. I physically felt what they were going through. I felt intoxicated during the scene they were getting high, I felt cold during the scenes they were trying to stay up at night. I cried so hard when Elias died at the end. I still hate Tom Berenger for leaving him out there. My mom said to me “it’s not real, they’er just acting.” That comment changed my life. I wanted to be that person in charge of another’s emotions. Not in a twisted way but to entertain to the point of engagement if thats a thing. To bring wonder and joy, laughter and pain or sadness to an audience. To touch heart. I love to perform it gives me a rush. It’s an addictive feeling to get in front of others and put my heart and soul, all my feelings of insecurity and self doubt out there and give it the finger. I do feel that fame is important. Its probably not what you want to here, but, I want to be able to act full time and reach the masses. I want the roles that are only given to a listers. I want the opportunity to be the best.

    Thank you.

  63. Im not quite sure how this works but, ever since i was younger i've had a huge imagination.my best memories were playing house and running around in the backyard with a light sabor defeating the big bad. you know, kid stuff. however its never gone away, i sit in my room and play out scenes in my head or actually physically play them out myself. In drama class at school i didnt perform just for the class but i did it for me too. Cause i felt like there was this voice inside me i could only get out by acting. By transforming ones self to become another. When i got into the real world my drive for acting deemed a little, i got the pressure of work and bills and money worries that weigh me down and doing a normal 9-5 job become my top priority. I got bored with that and depressed with that fairly quickly because it wasn't me. I wasn't expressing myself or challenging myself, i was falling into a normal pattern and becoming faceless and losing myself. I feel stuck and trapped and the only times i feel free are when im acting. i still sit and do monologues in my room and playout scenes jumping all around my room. I live in a small town and theres barely any opportunity for me here to do any training and/or theater or work. so online stuff is all i can find. Whenever i think of not being able to become and actor, in any capacity, it hurts and i don't know why i feel so strongly about this profession. I know a part of me wants to become an actress to be known, to be heard and to be able to have an impact on people's lives like i know my favourite movies and television shows have impacted mine. the other part of me would be happy with only ever doing stage and/or lower end roles. I know i need training and experience, its just finding it thats the hard part.

You can learn about someone that isn't you and may be totally different from who you are. From the moment I was able to watch television, is the moment I realized I wanted to become an actress. I owe it to myself to go after this dream, and this is why I'm here. I want to act, because I love the art, the skill, and the ability to create a world for an audience to enjoy. When I watch movies, I somehow find myself apart of that film that I'm watching. It's time I make it real.

There is something powerful about when an actor finds their connection to the character they are portraying and becomes vulnerable. A good actor can effect people in amazing ways. That's what I want to do. I want to connect with people. I want to make them feel something.

  76. Hello! My name is Julianna Azcarate! One of the reasons I LOVE acting is because I love to be expressive in new and dynamic ways, I know that there is an ocean of complexity and diversity within me of all different emotions, personas etc..well I love to find out how I can express each one of those. I am always wanting to tackle a new challenge, a new way of thinking and delving deep into certain characteristics. Also and of course, I am such a big huge fan of making people smile and or cry by moving them to a place of profoundness. I consider myself a messenger and acting is such a great medium for that. I LOVE that acting is so so fun, you always see a new side to yourself which may surprise you and you are always able to exercise your creativity. There is so much passion in it though shuttle at time. Another aspect of acting that I love is meeting so many talented people of whom you grow from and with, the whole production process is thrilling. What can I say I love it all haha.

  77. Hi, my name is Luiza. The reasons why I want to become an actressi are directly linked with my currents situation: as of now I am studying architecture, however my passion for it has slowly died because of some professor from which I couldn't finde encouragement and I feel that I have to improve myself to the point where they cannota argue with me over meaningless things so I want to improve on my speaking and interpretation of speeches and monologues. Another reason is to find a new passion in the arts. I studied painting in school and I'm currentlyl meaning how to play the guitar. I am a beginnerp pianist. Acting is that something that everybody wants to try, but is too scared to go throughw with it. It is an old dream of mine that I have alwaysk kept away and denied. I want to gain the ability to perform to give my existence a better chance of expressing myself and believing in myself more. That's about it. Thank you.

In about a year and a half, I’m going to graduate of a business high school, i’m almost 18, and i’ve decided that i don´t want my life to be ruled by what people call a secure money maker career, if it is going to make me miserable. Where I live, a small city in the center region of Mexico, we don´t have a culture of support to the careers that are not traditional. So i often find allot of people that wish they could’ve had a different view of life and do more of what they like, as a profession or as a hobby. I don´t now in a complete, substantial and super tangible way, what exactly do I want to do, but I figured given the best of me to something I really, really like would be a good place to start. I want to be and learn as much things as I can. I am just a teenage girl that is starting to realize her life is nowhere else that in her own hand. And I am thankful for all the persons that are and want to form part of it.

So i want to be an actress because ive always had some type of feeling about this , it makes me happy , it gives me a chance to play a role of a character who might be similiar or different to me , when your acting its like helping a director create a story.I want to be a role model , i want to be an actress who will influence people in different good ways , acting sends out a message and the audience or the watchers benefits from just watching the act. I dont want to be an actress for the Fame,I want to do it for myself.Everyone in my family except my mom encourages me and pray for that to happen and the good thing is that i dont give up i even try harder. What makes me a good actress is how i use my other skills by dancing , singing , playing guitar , or piano,I use all of those emotions and energy to combine them with my acting skills .I actually started liking acting when i was in a skit at school playing a role as a bully.Ive always wanted to be an Actress , but since my parents really cant afford much right now , by joining this online acting program i guarantee i can make it as an actress if put more work in it. Thanks You

  95. I want to do acting. I don't know where to start and how I can do it efficiently.. I have a YouTube channel I run and I feel that's my go to spot to get started in a sense. I love to motivate people and make them happy, my dream is to help people, and if I could do that through acting.. it's something that I'd love to do for a very long time.

I don't have money to hire fancy agents or anything of that nature.. so.. I'm starting wherever I can..

I hope I can do what I can to get started :)

I don't care about the fame or the money, it's the satisfaction I get of seeing other enjoy the story. I look forward to this class. Thank you for your vision in starting it.

  98. I took theater in high school and thats when i found that i really enjoyed acting. I loved the challenge of memorizing monologues and acting out different roles. Now as an adult memorize and film monologues to upload to my facebook for friends and family to enjoy. I would love to learn more acting so that i may have a better chance at landing a role at my local theater.

  99. Hello! I am Khalik. I want to be an actor because this is what I wanted since my childhood. My interest towards to be an actor appeared when I started to watch films about superheroes in my childhood. Since that time, it had a special effect on me. And now I am preparing myself with hardwork being an actor. I will do anything to reach my goal. I promise that one day you will see me in the movies. Good luck everyone, Chao!

  100. I've always had this dream of becoming an actor in the back of my head. All through grade school and high school I took acting classes, and it always brought me so much joy. I'm genuinely curious about people. I a always wondering what it would be like to be someone else. Being able to touch someone in an emotional way, whether to make them laugh or make them cry is something I aspire to do. Take people out of reality for a little while, ad take them on journey. I had stopped acting for a few years, but I am done putting my dream on hold and ready to pursue my acting career full force!

  103. I would love to be an actress because I feel relieved when I'm on stage. I feel better. Whatever's happened to me doesn't matter when I'm doing this. It makes me nervous and shaky in the best possible way.

  104. hello,
I just wanted to state that I want to be an actress because I love the way it just feels to be someone else for once, have someone listen to you, and be all sorts of different stereotypes. The type of actress I would really like to enjoy is television, movies, and film. I know I will have to start small, which I have. I've done plays for a long time, but the problem was that I never had lines. I was so confident that I was going to have at least one, but I wasn't. I am not that comfortable to be in a play with lines, but I know that in order to be an actress you have to speak up. I really, really want to grow into the opportunity to grow an actual talent and practice a lot. Thanks for reading.

    1. Hey there, that's one thing I relate too. Being able to not say the lines limits you in more ways than others and when it's time to speak up. For me it's in meetings at my current job, and I'm hoping this will help me speak up and build confidence in myself while in the process have a little fun building my confidence.

  105. Hello, I have always been interested in acting since I was a kid. Like most, I may have though about being a star, but U realize that would have come with a lot of planning and work. I live a normal life in Toronto but was recently an extra on a tv show and it has kind of sparked an interest in acting after speaking with a number of extras. A part of me though really wants to gain more confidence in my ability to speak up in a public setting, and I think going out of my comfort zone in a fun way by acting may assist. Whether I pursue acting or not, learning the steps would be good for my performance in front of others and may be beneficial in my current field of work for public presentations. I hope this course really helps and I do well! Best of luck to everyone taking part :)

  106. Hello! My name is Sierra. I grew up watching movies and TV shows and have always had a fascination with them and behind the scenes and how actors portrayed such a vast variety of personalities. I want to become an actress because I want to find a way to be more free with myself and to make other people laugh and intrigued as well about certain emotions and positions.

  108. I want to be an actor because I enjoy it. I love working with different people to make words on a piece of paper come to life, add our own interpretation to the story, and make friends with those I do that with. All of my acting have been musicals on stage (except a few times in my brother's videos). I'm not in it for the fame and money, and every time I don't make it into a show I know that there is always another chance. :-) Being an actress will help me be able to come out of my shell and not care what others think of me. It's hard being a completely average girl in the theatre world, especially the musical world where I only have an ok voice compared to MANY others. Whether or not I actually become an actress, I will have the experience and joy from memories of trying and succeeding in what I love.

  109. why do i want to become an actor: because its fun! its an amazing way to express your self, eventhough your expressing the emotion of the character, its being fueled by your own emotions, and its so liberating being able to do that, and then entertain people and move them at the same time :) im no actress yet, but i enjoy it and i really want to learn and practice more to see what i can bring to the table for myself and for the audiance! :)
