Common Core Drama Free Lesson Plan #2

Here is another free lesson plan (#2) on how to use drama to teach the Common Core Education standards.

Next standard in K-5 English Language Arts: "Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas."

Read the play "Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate" as a class http://www.freedrama.net/peggy.html

What is the central idea or theme of the play? (answer: everyone thinks Peggy is too small to be a pirate)

What are some example for the text that support the central idea or theme? (have student find specific lines from the play that support the central idea - her nickname given to her by Scummy is one example)

What is the first major event that gives Peggy a chance to prove herself? (answer: the pirates are all captured by a sea monster and she is the only one that can save them)

What problems/challenges does Peggy overcome on her journey? (many answers: winning wheel of misfortune, finding the baby sea monster, etc.)

What are some examples of Peggy being braver and smarter than other pirates? (many answers: facing the sea monster, finding out the problem (litter), etc.)
