Hysterical History play performed in Athens, Greece

My play, The Hysterical History of the Trojan War, will be performed by a school in Athens, Greece. http://www.freedrama.net/troy.html

How fun is that? A play about a Greek story being performed in the far away country where the story originated. Very cool!

Pirate Play for Kids with Humor and a Good Message

Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate has been a popular children's play from freedrama.net for many years. It has three versions:

15 minute version with 7 characters+optional extras: http://www.freedrama.net/pegpint.html

30 minute version with 14 characters+optional extras: http://www.freedrama.net/peggy.html

And version with a male lead called Pete the Pint Sized Pirate: http://www.freedrama.net/pete.htm

I recently got an email from a school in Nevada who said really nice things about the play:

"We performed your play last night for our community. It is probably one of the funnest plays we have performed. The audience loved it, but the cast had so much fun performing it, too. We loved that the play had humor and a good message. Thank you for allowing us to use your play." - Cheryl Turner

My daughter and her movie club also did a movie version of the play a few years ago:

Could you love a child that isn't yours? (old play new poster)

My wife made a poster for an upcoming production of an older script of mine called John and Maggie: http://freedrama.net/johnmag.html

I hadn't read this script in a long time but decided to re-read it when my wife was hired by a theatre to make a poster for them. I was pleased that it's still a good read. And it raises many interesting questions about children, abortion and religion. Read the play too and post your thoughts in the comments. I will be happy to discuss it with you.

Make a Backyard Play Production for some summer fun!

Here's a fun idea for summer for young actors. Get your friends together, pick a play and do a summer backyard theatre.

Here are a few fun scripts to consider:

"Rock, Sword, Firecracker!" Short comedy about the legend behind the game of Rock, Scissors, Paper. 3+ actors (any gender)

"Touched by an Alien" Short comedy about space explorers that discover a new kind of alien. 5 actors of any gender (plus possible non-speaking roles).

"Stung" A short comedy about someone who wants to be one with nature but nature doesn't like her. (4 speaking parts with possible extras)

"Fart-Zen" - very short play for three or more actors (any gender)

Get some big old sheets for a curtain, use a rope to hang them, get chairs or towels for seats and make popcorn. Invite your families of all your actors to come see the show.

Somebody Famous produced in Albania

I love seeing my plays produced, but it's especially fun when another country uses my script. My play Somebody Famous http://freedrama.net/prison.html is being produced in Albania.

I have to admit... I had to consult a map to see where that was (by Greece).

I was even invited to see the production. That would be a dream come true to go see my productions around the world. Maybe one day :)

Somebody Famous is a script for 7 actors (5 women, 2 men) that was written as a full length version of my popular script Nobody Famous which becomes the play within the play.

Here is the poster from the Albania production:

Star Trek style satire script (Touched by an Alien)

Here is a fun sci fi script which seems a good one to mention with the new Star Trek movie coming out:

http://freedrama.net/aliens.html

It's called Touched by an Alien and it has a big to say about the world too (not just your average satire).

Free Hysterical Historical Play (about the Trojan War)

Here is a popular play that's great for all ages. The Hysterical History of the Trojan War. http://www.freedrama.net/troy.html

The Trojan War has never been so funny. It's the actual story by Homer but told in a humorous way that modern audiences of all ages can enjoy. Fun for the whole family :)

Free teen actor full length play about life

Here is a great full length play for teen actors http://www.freedrama.net/weirdschool.html

The Weird, Wild and Wonderful Days of School

A full length play about young adults who are dealing with the comedy, challenges and changes of life. This play has a flexible cast. Not all scenes need to be performed. And actors can play multiple parts because no characters repeat from scene to scene. The smallest cast you could have by doing all the scripts would be three males and four females. But there are many as 49 speaking roles possible.

Funny Skit for Three or More Actors (that will give you gas)

I had a very immature moment when I wrote this one but I still like it.

Fart Zen! A play about the spiritual side of passing gas. http://www.freedrama.net/fertzen.html

It has two main parts and the option for several more parts (the students). It is a good play if you have a couple strong actors and then a lot of actors who just need the experience being on stage.

And a great picture by my wife:

Help teaching acting

Question:

I am trying to draw up a three months plan for our drama classes which is 3 mnths short courses... Which are the important aspects of acting we should start with at the first month, the second month and the third months. Important aspect one can do to qualify to get a certificate

Answer: I would say improv for the first part of the class: http://www.freedrama.net/improv.htm

And then discuss acting. Here are some lessons: http://www.freedrama.net/acting.html

Then do short scenes: http://www.freedrama.net/short.html

And then work on monologues for the final: http://www.freedrama.net/small1.html Or do an improv show: http://www.freedrama.net/theme.html

Super Hero Support Group (free play for six actors)

Super Hero Support Group free online one act play script comedy

Free Preview: "Superhero Support Group" Play for six actors

SAMPLE SCENE BELOW

A group of people dressed as superheroes sit in a row of a waiting room.
DOGBOY
Rough.

CATCHICK
Hiss.

DOGBOY
I wasn't barking.

CATCHICK
Oh.

DOGBOY
I was thinking how rough of a day I've had.

CATCHICK
That's why you're here.

DOGBOY
But I have things to do... crime to fight.  I can't wait around here all day.

CATCHICK
You don't have a choice.

SMACK
I can't take it anymore!  I have to get out of here.

(Doctor enters)

DOCTOR
Sit down.

SMACK
You can't stop me.  I'm Smack the Superstrong!  I will smite you!

DOGBOY
Nice tagline!

(Smack swings at Doctor but she backs away and then grabs his ear and twists.  Smack falls to the floor in pain)

DOCTOR
There will be no smiting, nor biting.

DOGBOY
Grrr!

DOCTOR
Nor scratching.

CATCHICK
Hisss!

DOCTOR
Everyone please wait your turn and no more disturbances.

(Doctor lets go of Smack.  There is a ding and Doctor exits)

DOGBOY
How did she stop you?

SMACK
I don't know.

CATCHICK
Mind powers.  She's got mind powers more powerful than you can imagine.

(Shade comes from behind the chairs)

SHADE
Our powers are useless around her.

DOGBOY
Where'd you come from?

SHADE
I am Shade.  I came from the shadows.

CATCHICK
More like from behind the chairs.  How long have you been back there?

SHADE
Long enough to know what's going on here.

DOGBOY
What is going on?

SHADE
The doctor is removing our powers.

SMACK
What?

SHADE
Not only can she stop us.  She can take away our powers... forever!

DOGBOY
Nice dramatic pause.

SMACK
This is terrible.  I'd be nothing without my super strength!  I can't go back to being some loser working at D-Mart.

CATCHICK
Personally I'm tired of all the hairballs.  She can have my powers.

DOGBOY
I do get tired of smelling everything.

(DOGBOY sniffs around and looks at Shade and makes a face)

DOGBOY (CONT.)
You smell like you've been hiding there a LONG time.

SHADE
We have to escape.

SMACK
Or smite the doc!

DOGBOY
But how?

SHADE
Shhh!  She's coming!

(Shade hides behind the chairs.  The others sit in their chairs.  The Doctor enters with another superhero)

DOCTOR
You'll never have to worry about flying again.

CAPER
I guess it's time to hang up my cape.

DOCTOR
Stay off the rooftops. Or we'll have to have another session.

CAPER
I'm done.  Please.  I promise.

DOCTOR
Very well.  No need to schedule a followup then.

CAPER
Please.  Never again.

DOCTOR
Next!

(Catchick stands.  Dogboy grabs her arm but she hisses and pulls away)

CATCHICK
Look.  I want to be able to go the beach again.  I want to go swimming again.  I am tired of all those naps.  Please doctor.  Take me next.

DOCTOR
Walk this way.

(Catchick follows Doctor off.  Caper starts to go but Smack grabs him.  Shade comes out)

SMACK
The doctor took your powers!

Improving Voice Acting (Killing the Monotone)

Question: Any tips on voice enunciation because I sound the same throughout the recording?

Answer: First, when you go through a script, think of different emotions the character might be feeling.

In this monologue: http://freedrama.net/protecto.html At first he is excited, then in the middle he is sad or worried. Then he starts to get excited again, but then at the end he is confused and disappointed. You'd want to reflect that in your voice and acting. Show each of those emotions for each part.

Next, look at each sentence. Pick out a word or two in each sentence that you'd want to put the most emphasis on. In the line "I've always dreamed of being a hero." You might pick "dreamed" or "hero" or both to the be the words you say a little more clearly or forcefully.

I hope this helps!

Romantic comedy script for 2-4 actors Looks Get in the Way

Here is one of my favorites, a romantic comedy called: "Looks Get in the Way" http://www.freedrama.net/looksget.html

It is a great story about finding someone who loves you for who you are, not how you look.

Short comedy about finding the perfect person. 2-3 m 1-2 w (4 total).

"LOOKS GET IN THE WAY" by D. M. Larson from Freedrama.net
Copyright (c) 2011 All Rights Reserved
This play appears in the book "3 Short Comedy Scripts" available on Amazon.com ISBN-13: 978-1546726845

(There is a nice restaurant with a bit of a romantic atmosphere.  A woman in a little old lady mask (Sidney) is sitting at the down center table sitting across from an empty chair.  A man, Tony, walks up to the table.  He stops and gives a funny look at Sidney)

TONY
Uh... I think I have the wrong table?

(Sidney speaks in an old lady voice)

SIDNEY
Who you looking for, honey?

TONY
Sidney.

SIDNEY
That's me.

TONY
What?

SIDNEY
I'm Sidney.

TONY
Is this a joke?

SIDNEY
Are you Tony?  You're late.  I thought you'd be here at 5.

TONY
I've gotta go.  Uh... I just wanted to tell you that Tony can't make it.

(Tony leaves.  Sidney does her regular voice)

SIDNEY
See you later, loser.

(A waitress (or waiter) brings Sidney an appetizer.  Sidney eats it through the mouth hole in the mask.  Next Phil enters.  He is a nerdy looking guy in glasses and has some old flowers in his hand.  The waitress shows him to Sidney's table.  Phil is so nervous he doesn't even look at Sidney and sits.  He shields himself with his flowers.)

PHIL
Hey, there, Sidney.  I'm early.  I mean I'm Phil and I'm early.  I am glad you're early too, well, sort of. I was hoping to beat you and get used to the room first.  I get nervous in new places.  And with new people.  I get nervous a lot.  I brought you flowers.

(Phil sticks the flowers in the middle of the table to it blocks Sidney from view and himself as well.  Sidney tries to get a good look at Phil.)

PHIL (CONT.)
The flowers are a little wilted.  They were pretty.  I mean there is this wonderful flower shop but I didn't have time to go there today but I did a few days ago and I wanted those flowers.  I don't get a date every day you know and I wanted this to be special, so I got the best flowers I know of but I want this to be great.  You know what I mean.

(Sidney grabs and flowers and smells them.  In her old lady voice she says:)

SIDNEY
They're lovely.

(Phil sees Sidney's old lady mask for the first time.  He is suddenly speechless.  He stares a moment.  He takes off his glasses and cleans them.  He puts them on and looks again.  Sidney puts the flowers to the side of the table and looks at Phil happily.  After a few moments of silence:)

PHIL
What's with the mask?

SIDNEY
Does it scare you?

PHIL
Not really... it's just... weird.

SIDNEY
Hmm... so you're not gonna run off on me?

PHIL
I have to admit.  I'm a little curious.  Why would you wear an old person mask to dinner?  And do the weird voice?

SIDNEY
It's my way of weeding out the losers.  I want to find a man who likes what I'm really like and doesn't let my looks get in the way.

SCENE

Lights are dim and focus on a corner of the church which the confessional.  We see Jude and Delia but they are divided by a partition.

DELIA
I'm scared, Father.

JUDE
Scared?  Of what?

DELIA
Everything.

JUDE
God will protect you.

DELIA
I wish I could believe that.

JUDE
You can trust God.

DELIA
I fear God. I don't trust him.  I am afraid what he is going to do.  I am afraid of what will happen every day... If I go outside, what will be waiting for me?  There's something wrong out there.  Something's not right.

JUDE
Things are changing.  I have sensed it too.

DELIA
What do we do?

jude
Trust in God.

DELIA
Back to that again... How can I trust him?   How can I trust the one who took my father away? How can I trust the one who turned my mother into a drunk? How I trust the one who put me in the house of someone who abused me?  Every day I lived in fear.  What would happen if I stepped outside my room?  I didn't know what was waiting for me.  I never knew what would wake up that day.  The creep, the angry one, the monster... I didn't even want to get out of bed anymore.  It got too hard.  I was too scared.  I would hide and pray to God to help me.  But God never did.  My childhood gone and my only escape was adulthood.

JUDE
You blamed God for all that?

DELIA
Even if God didn't do it why did he let it happen?

JUDE
He will never give you more than you can handle.

DELIA
I can't handle it though... I'm going crazy.. The fear is crippling me... I have to drag myself out of bed and force myself to live each day... Sure, I put on this happy face... People think I am pretty cheerful... No one cares to see the pain under my skin... The pain that's ripping at my soul.

JUDE
God sees.

DELIA
I know.

JUDE
Have you sinned?

DELIA
What?

JUDE
Are you a sinner?

DELIA
I don't know...

JUDE
Do you think about sinning?

DELIA
All the time.

JUDE
What stops you?

DELIA
Fear... Fear of what might happen to me... See, I'm afraid of everything.

JUDE
Your fear could be a blessing.

DELIA
What?

JUDE
It keeps you from doing wrong... It keep you from doing anything evil.

DELIA
I hope so.

JUDE
Do you feel tempted?

DELIA
All the time.

JUDE
What tempts you?

DELIA
I'm tempted to give up... It's too hard to keep living.

JUDE
Perhaps you need something to live for.

DELIA
I do.

JUDE
We will ask God to give you something to live for... We are all born with a purpose.

DELIA
I just want to know what it is.

Becoming a film director

Question: i want to be a director of film but im really discouraged. kids my age know so much about it already and i dont know squat. where do people go to get movies sponsered? and what does the producer do thats different or the same as the director? what classes in college do i take for this kind of job? and i'd love to know anything else you guys can think of that u think i should know. thanks so much for helping me! Answer: If you wanted to make a career of it, the best colleges to go to are in LA (like USC or UCLA). Those schools would give you the background to be a director and create connections for you for jobs later. Most other colleges won't have programs that focus on directing or won't have connections to jobs. A director can be a producer too or they can be two different people. A producer is usually the person with the money and the connections. The producer sometimes hires the director or the director goes out and finds a producer for a project. If you have money, then you can be the producer. If you don't have the money, you find someone to produce. The best way to start out is directing short films. Find a good short script (here are several: http://www.freedrama.net/short.html) and make a movie. It doesn't matter if you have a great camera or crew, just get practice making movies. I made a lot of bad, short movies before winning an Emmy Award so go out and have fun and you'll learn from each movie you make (good or bad). When you get a good short movie made, then you submit it to film festivals and hopefully win some awards. And hopefully get some attention from producers who want to help you make a longer movie.
