The funniest play yet! The Hysterical History of the Trojan War http://freedrama.net/troy.html

A very popular play script on the Freedrama website is "The Hysterical History of the Trojan War" freedrama.net/troy.html

It's a great play because it appeals to all ages and has a little bit of something for everyone.

I recently got a nice comment from Theresa Morrison-Meyers who produced the play:

"I have been hosting a spring concert for the students to demonstrate their artistic talents for ten years. Every year we have performed a play but this years, your play, was by far the funniest yet."

It's always wonderful to hear when one of my plays is a success. Thank you, Theresa!

Suggestion for "No Witnesses" (turning a monologue in to a duologue)

Here is an excellent suggestion for adapting a monologue to a duologue for two actors.

Thank you to Rick Scheffert for the suggestion!

"I would like to share what I did with "No Witnesses." Instead of using it as a monologue I split it up between two people. It was really quite effective. I got comments from audience members about it.

On stage the two characters were unaware of the other person. It went as follows.

Actor 1: I saw it... This terrible thing.

Actor 2: It happened to this girl I don't even like. And no one knows who did it...

Both: Except me. (Pause) Do I tell?

Actor 1: It's between what is right and what will ruin your life.

Actor 2: I don't even like her...

Actor 1: She brings it on herself.

Actor 2: Why does she have to be so... Weird?

Actor 1: And if I tell... Everyone will turn against me...

Actor 2: I will be like her... An outcast...

Both: Invisible.

Actor 1: Is that how it happens... One little thing you do turns you in to a leper?

Both: Social leprosy.

Actor 2: The right thing feels so wrong.

Actor 1: I know I'm supposed to tell the truth but the truth will not set me free.

Actor 2: The truth will ruin me...

Actor 1: Keeping quiet will ruin her...

Actor 1: And I don't know if I care.

Actor 2: And I don't know if I care. (actor 2 needs to be careful not to sound like they are agreeing with actor 1 as they are supposed to be unaware of each other)

Actor 2: I guess that's what happened to all those guys who stood up for what was right...

Actor 1: Gandhi shot, Martin Luther King shot, Jesus crucified...

Both: I'm no Jesus.

Actor 2: I wonder if she could ever forgive me?

Actor 1: She can get over it right?

Both: (not quite in unison) Forgive me... I don't want to be crucified.

Helping Teens Young Adults and Youth with Monologues (teaching about emotions, body language and expressions - teaching, counseling, social work)

I had someone request plays today for teaching young adults (teens, youth) about emotions. What a great idea! Using a monologue gives students a chance to explore different emotions safely and can bridge to their own emotions. This could be an excellent tool for working with troubled kids who have trouble expressing themselves.

For example, give them a monologue like "The Not So Perfect Child" by D. M. Larson. http://www.freedrama.net/notperfect.html

This monologue has a child dealing with being angry at her mother and older sister. The teacher / leader could have students try to show the right emotions for the monologue (anger, sadness, etc.) and then try to show the right body language for the character.

"No Witnesses" is another good monologue with someone who is hiding a secret. http://freedrama.net/nowitness.html

And some good monologues that deal with relationships with boys and girls:

"Before You Punch Me" http://www.freedrama.net/punchme.html
"Breaking Heart" http://freedrama.net/breakheart.html

And some good monologues that deal with feelings of appearances:

"Perfectly Ugly" http://freedrama.net/perfectugly.html

"Piggy Princess" http://www.freedrama.net/piggyp.html

Finally, some other good monologues to deal with other emotions about family:

"Beauty and Perfection" http://freedrama.net/monoshelly.html

"First Words" http://www.freedrama.net/firstwords.html

"Mess Things Up" http://www.freedrama.net/messup.html

"Sob Story" http://www.freedrama.net/sobstory.html

"Funny Little Fussy Face" monologue for female from play "Reception" (emotions from sexy, flirty to pouty)

"Funny Little Fussy Face"
monologue for a female
by D. M. Larson
from the published play
"Death of an Insurance Salesman"
ISBN-13: 978-1518665547

MINDY
You're so cute when you get mad. You get this funny little fussy face.

(She mocks his mad look)

I started liking you a few years ago.

There was this one meeting we were both at. You had just been promoted and you got up in front of everyone and did this big speech. And every time you looked at me, your eyes stopped on me a moment longer than everyone else. And you'd stumble on your words a little. Maybe it was that low cut shirt I was wearing that day?

Or maybe it was that really short skirt of mine and I was sitting like this.

(She does a sexy sit, crossing her legs in a flirty way)

You're Stuttering. Too cute.

(She suddenly changes her attitude and grows cold, unhappy that she didn't turn him on)

It's not important.

Look... I didn't think it would work out. So I didn't say anything.

Never mind. Forget I Said anything okay?

Upcoming play prop "Flip Flop Circuit"

I am writing a new full length play (still untitled) and I needed a strange machine like prop that could have existed in the 1920's. I found this "flip flop" machine online that was made in 1918:

The scene is a ghost hunter who picks up strange readings and needs some kind of machine that he uses. Since the play within the play takes place in the 1920's I needed something from that time and here it is!

"Much Madness" free dramatic monologue from published play (sadness, panic, insanity, lonely, angry)

"Much Madness" is a free dramatic monologue from a published play by the same name and deals with emotions such as sadness, insanity, panic, lonely and anger.

You must ask for permission before using this play in a performance or publication by contacting doug@freedrama.net (please include the title in your request).

JANEY

I want to be alone - I can't be around other people -

(Pause. Looks up, afraid)

I get really scared - I almost feel like I can't breathe -

(Panics a little)

I just need to be alone, Doctor -

(Angry)

You don't really care - you're simply doing your job - once I'm "better" you'll be through with me - then it's on to another person -

(Gives a mean look)

You're just like everyone else -

(Speaking viciously)

- you probably haven't cared about anyone in years - that would be unprofessional - and a burden you don't need for yourself -

(She pauses. Calms a little)

Please, just let me go - I know what I need better than you -

(Angry again)

You're not God, you know - you don't have the powers to cure everything - I know what you can and can't do -

(Screams)

Go on - get out now!

(Long pause and silence. Cries)

No one really cares, do they -

(Struggles to talk through her tears)

You think you can help me - change me -

(Pause)

People should only fix what's broken -

(Furious)

I said I don't want to talk anymore! Leave me alone! I don't have to tell you anything! I'm not a little kid.

(Bends over and buries her face in her hands. Cries for a bit and then is much calmer)

There's so much you don't know -

(She looks up at the sky)

- if only I could fly -

(her eyes look in wonder)

I'm leaving all the Earthly matters to you - I belong near a different sun -

(Points to a star)

I wish I were a star - part of some constellation so I would never be lonely.

- it's so free out there - no one can touch you or hurt you - you can simply shine -

(Pauses)

People don't like it when you shine - that's why stars are up there and not down here - humans think the brightness is offensive -

(Pause - looks and smiles at the stars)

My mother is a star now -

She always seemed like one to me - but stars don't like it very well where they can't be stars anymore - so they fade away - never shining again -

(Pause - grows sad)

I want to be a star - stars having meaning - stars I understand -

SCENES

NOTE: the staging of this play is extremely difficult. There are several scene changes that require a large crew to move the sets in and out. Sets should be as simple as possible to allow for quick changes.

ACT 1 SCENE 1 Kids in living rooms, video of ZONE (or ZONE standing on a platform speaking)

ACT 1 SCENE 2 KURTís school lunchroom (already on set behind screen or ZONEís platform)

ACT 1 SCENE 3 Actors set up camp as part of scene (tents and fireplace). Crew can be dressed in black and clear lunch tables. The character of SPIRIT can have little spirits (the crew) that help with set changes. The UC backdrop can be of a really spooky trail.

ACT 1 SCENE 4 L is the entrance to the cave. This can be in place before the play begins as long as it remains out of sight and unlit until this point in the play.

ACT 2 SCENE 1 Camp again

ACT 2 SCENE 2 Stage R where there is a ritual stone. Perhaps something like a Stonehenge arch. This can be in place from the start of the play or start of ACT 2.

ACT 2 SCENE 3 Camp again

ACT 2 SCENE 4 Ritual stone R.

ACT 2 SCENE 5 Camp again

ACT 1 SCENE 1

(Lights come up on a kid, ZANE, R who puts a video in a player and sits, hits play on a remote and starts watching a tv. A video is projected onto a large screen C with an odd looking man, ZONE, and cheesy text saying Magic Camp. [note: if a screen and projection is not possible, have ZONE appear on a small platform center with a sign saying ìMagic Camp.])

ZONE

Welcome to... Magic Camp.

(Cheesy magical effect on video. Other kids appear UR, UL and L. These are TRISTAN, MOON and BRIGIT)

ZONE (cont.)

If you're watching this video, you have been specially selected for a summer pass to... Magic Camp.

ZANE

Yeah, right. Everyone kid in town probably got one of these.

ZONE (cont.)

Actually, only five children have been selected for this honor.

(ZANE looks around nervously because it's like ZONE is hearing him)

MOON

Children? I'm no child.

ZONE

Children was a poor choice of words... how about young adults?

(MOON is freaked out now too)

ZONE

Our counselors have identified each of you because of your unique abilities.

TRISTAN

What special abilities?

ZONE

Well, some of you may not know yet what these abilities are, but we can see the potential in you.

(Lights go off on kids. ZONE points to someone in the audience then his video fades and screen rises)

ACT 1 SCENE 2

(A school lunchroom appears [already on set behind screen or behind where ZONE was standing] with a table C and another table UC. JOEY sits at the C table. Heís a nerdy little kid who looks around nervously. KURT sits at a table behind him with his back to the audience eating hungrily. JAG is in shadows watching them. BILLY and BOB go up to JOEY)

BILLY

Hey, Joey.

BOB

How's lunch?

(BOB dumps lunch into JOEY's lunch)

BILLY

Ooops. Looks like you lost your lunch.

(BILLY and BOB laugh. JOEY speaks quietly)

JOEY

Please leave me alone.

BOB

What's that? What he say?

BILLY

Don't know. I don't speak Loser!

(BILLY and BOB laugh again. KURT rises from his table but doesn't turn. He speaks in a low growl)

KURT

He said to leave him alone.

BOB

Hey, Joey. Looks like the new kid wants to join your loser club.

BILLY

That means a trip to the loser whirlpool.

BOB and BILLY

Swirly!

(BILLY grabs KURT by the arm and BOB goes for the other but KURT grabs them and lifts them up [note: have BILLY and BOB stand on table bench that hopefully can be hidden from audience view]. KURT has wild hair, almost like he has ears and he's got some shadow on his face like he already shaves and his eyes appear yellow [this would involve tinted contacts - only do this with professional consultation so eye damage doesn't occur])

KURT

Don't touch me.

(BILLY and BOB scream like little girls. KURT drops them down, he howls and they run)

KURT

You okay?

JOEY

Thanks.

KURT

Just howl if you need me again.

JOEY Too bad this is the last day of school. With you, we'd rule this place.

KURT Maybe next year then.

JOEY

Yeah!

(JOEY picks up his lunch and exits with new found confidence and lets out a little howl. KURT smiles and takes one last big bite of his lunch. JAG enters. She's dressed so you can hardly see her and she hangs by the shadows)

JAG

I like your style kid.

KURT

Who are you?

JAG

Have you ever heard of Magic Camp?

KURT

I got some stupid video in the mail about it.

JAG

But you didn't watch all of it.

KURT

I didn't have to. I know those videos. They get you all excited and then they flash some price you can't afford.

JAG

The camp is free.

KURT

Free? Yeah, right. Nothing is free.

JAG

This is. I already talked to your parents. Theyíre old friends. They said you could go.

KURT

Is this some camp for troubled kids? My parents have tried that before and you ain't got the cure for my troubles. They all act like they understand but they don't. Nobody knows what I'm going through.

(JAG steps into the light and removes her hood. We can see she looks like a jaguar [face painted and hair streaked with jaguar colors])

JAG

I do.

(KURT is stunned into silence. Lights fade to black. Everyone starts setting up tents and campfire is setup DC)

"Sob Story"
by D. M. Larson

SAM
Homeless kids aren't homeless because they want to be. Homeless kids are usually ones that aren't wanted. Either their parents died or they left them. Oh, sure there's foster homes but they don't really want you either. If they did, why would they keep getting rid of me?

I didn't always have a home. I lived on the streets a little while. And surprise, there were lots of kids there with me. People never thought we were homeless even though we weren't dressed nice. Kids never dress nice anyway. And sometimes we'd even get a five finger discount on something nice from a store. That's how I got caught. I hadn't been out there very long when they got me. Some kids are out there forever. They learn how to survive. I didn't.

They gave me a choice. Come here to the Happy Rancher or go to jail. Sarge even came down to visit with me.

(Softens)

He told me about the Happy Rancher and despite the stupid name it sounded kinda cool. And he did something most people never did for me. He asked me what I wanted. He really wanted to know what he could help me do for myself. I just broke down and cried. It seemed like I cried forever.

I'd finally found someone who cared.

(Realizes she's just spilled her guts to a stranger and makes a total turn around)

Oh, man, what am I saying. You must think I'm a total dork.

(Laughs)

Real sob story, huh?

BEAUTY AND PERFECTION (A MONOLOGUE FROM THE PLAY "FLOWERS IN THE DESERT" BY D. M. LARSON OF FREEDRAMA.NET)

SHELLY
Beauty and perfection. That's what you are Miss Shelly. Bet those boys back home would be doing a quite a bit of howling if they saw you now. Look at all the wonderful things time has done to you.

(Lowers mirror)

And when I get to Hollywood and become a star, they'll wonder where this goddess came from. But my past will be a mystery, because life before this moment ain't worth telling about. After those early years things have only gotten better. Actually I'll bet being born was one of the biggest let-downs of all. I spent all that time wrapped up in that little space in my mama, and for what? I pop out and look around, screaming, wondering if this was such a good idea. Wondering why someone didn't tell me sooner what it was gonna be like those first few years, 'cause if someone had told me, I don't think I woulda come out.
